Problem of the Day

Article posted September 11, 2007 at 12:13 PM GMT0 • comment (27) • Reads 5104

Math can really be thought of as being its own language at times. There are various terms that we use that if you did not have an understanding of it would make it difficult to communicate with someone about math.
I want you to imagine that you are communicating with someone that has no real understanding of the language of math. Explain to them as clear as possible how you would estimate the quotient for 1,164 divided by 582. Remember, your audience knows what numbers are, but they have no concept of math terms (i.e. estimate, quotient, etc.).

Ecosystems

Article posted September 7, 2007 at 12:38 PM GMT0 • comment (19) • Reads 233

We are about to start our study of ecosystems. I would like to know what you already know about ecosystems as well as things you would like to learn about ecosystems as we study them. To go ahead and get the topic rolling I will give you the definition of an ecosystem (also this will avoid the answers of I don't know anything and I want to know what an ecosystem is). The definition of an ecosystem is a community of organisms (living things) and their physical environment.

Ideal Classroom

If you could design your very own classroom for 5th grade what would it be like? Describe it in detail: how would it look, what would the rules be like, what type of learning would occur, etc.?

Comment Vs. Compliment

Article posted March 30, 2007 at 01:34 PM GMT0 • comment (14) • Reads 250

I have been reading some things about blogs and one of the conversations I have been reading is about the comments on blogs. It seems that teachers have found that students tend to think that the comments on a blog have to be compliments instead of comments. I would like you to think about the difference between these two words and discuss them in a comment to this post. Think about how one could generate thinking and more response than the other.
