Our playground was wet and covered with puddles after a heavy rain. Nevaeh had an idea to use chalk and color in some of the cracks in the blacktop. Everyone joined in for some creative fun.

We couldn't think of a better way to learn about water and stay cool on one of the hottest days this year. We learned about making streams, rivers, ponds and ocean. We worked together and had lots of fun. We did get wet and a bit dirty. Collin said, "Kids are about getting dirty." We all think that playing is an important part of learning and that's why Mrs. Knee LOVES kindergarten! Thank you Mrs. Heon for taking all the pictures and making this movie for our blog.

We are lucky to have a wetland beside our school. In the early spring, we could hear the wood frogs.
We collected a group of eggs from the wetland.
In one week they hatched.
We have had our tadpoles for a few weeks. We noticed many changes since they first emerged from the frog spawn.
They are bigger.
They are not black.
The tails are longer.
They grew!
You can see the eyes.
You can see the mouth.
Some are smaller. There are different sizes.
We made some sketches of our growing tadpoles. We wonder when they will grow legs.

We had a party for our moms.
We decorated the room so the moms could have places to sit.
We made a cake for our mothers.
We made lemonade with lemons and sugar and water for them.
We served our moms cake and lemonade.
When we opened the door, it was exciting to see our moms at school.
We went out of the room to find our moms.
We sang for our moms.
We gave our moms presents.
We made pictures of our mom.
We wrote about our moms.
We gave petunias to our moms and they were different colors - red, dark pink, purple and light purple.
We made a thumbprint necklace for our moms.
It was good because we got to see our moms at school.
It felt good because we got to spend time with our moms.

A self portrait is a picture of someone that is drawn by that person. We used mirrors to look at our faces closely. We noticed lines and shapes on our faces. We drew what we saw and when we finished, we had a self portrait.
We used our found objects and beautiful stuff to copy our self portrait. Now we had two portraits. One we drew and one we made from found objects.
We liked finding things that would go with our drawings to make our faces. We used things to make our pictures colorful, like yarn for our hair. It was fun to think of new ways to use our found objects and to think about making portraits in different ways.

Mrs. Knee and Mr. Knee make maple syrup at their house. Mrs. Knee told us about making maple syrup and we read books about it. We watched a video too. We learned:
You get sap from sugar maple trees.
First you drill a small hole in the tree and then you put a pile in the hole. Then you tap it in with a hammer. You have to hang a bucket on the spile and put a top on it. The sap drips into the bucket.
The sap comes when the days are warm and the nights are cold.
It takes lots of sap to make syrup. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.
Mr. Knee boils the sap in a big pan n the sugar house. He boils for a long time until the sap turns to sugar.
There is a cupola on top of the sugar house. The steam goes out the cupola.
We made pancakes at school and had some of Mr. Knee's syrup on them. It was the best!
Mrs. Knee cooked syrup for a longer time until it was thicker. We went outside and up the hill to the field. We found clean snow. It was deep. Mrs. Knee poured the syrup on the snow and it turned sticky and icky. That is Sugar on Snow. Sebastian and Nolan liked it. It was sweet and good. It stuck to Emily's mitten and it stuck in Olivia's hair.
:
Have you ever had Sugar on Snow?

We celebrated Read Across America and World Reading Day by inviting several people around the world to read to us. Each day, we used Skype to connect with a new reader. We listened to new stories and made new friends. We even heard a story that we knew. Our friend, Mrs. Marrinan stayed up late to read to us. It was good to meet Mrs. Cassidy. We read her blog and have wondered what she looks like. Ms. von Wahlde surprised us by sending us the book she read. We enjoyed our new stories so much that Mrs. Knee bought most of the books for our class. Now we can read the books whenever we want and have good memories of our skype calls.

When Mrs. Marrinan came to visit in December, she brought us several books from Australia. We became interested in Australian animals and have been learning about them through books, websites and even with the help of Mrs. M and the Gems. We have a wiki that we used for our online information - check it out here. We shared our learning with our families on curriculum night. We want to share our learning with you, too.

We have had a wonderful winter of snow play. We've hiked in the woods, rolled snowballs to make snowmen and even had lots of snow for sliding. After our recent blizzard and some warmer temperatures, we had the perfect snow for building. Can you guess what we made? Here are some pictures to give you a hint....
Do you need more hints? We worked very hard packing the snow in the recycle bins and carrying them over to the building spot where Big Jack and Omar were waiting.
Did you guess? If you still don't know, we think this video will help you. Please tell us what you think.

Wednesday was our 100th day of school. We've been preparing for the 100th day of school by practicing our oral counting skills. Many children can count to 100 and the rest of the class continues to practice. We also have been making groups of ten and counting by 10's to 100. Last week, we worked on a bulletin board display that combined the 100th day event with Valentine's Day. After folding paper and cutting out more than 400 hearts, we used them to make 100 Valentine "Cards". Each child wrote 5 numbers in sequence until we reached 100. There have been several compliments about our display and many people stop to look a bit closer. Each square is a work of art. We are very pleased with the results.

Last week was a very cold week. It was 0* F and we couldn't go outside for recess. But that was okay because we did some cold weather science work.
What we know:
We know that things freeze in a freezer
You can make ice in a freezer.
Lakes freeze when it is cold.
What we wonder:
Can we make ice outside?
What can we put the water in?
We found containers to put water in. We even used a Bilibo. Mrs. Knee had some balloons. We know about water balloons and we wondered if the water would freeze inside the balloon. We filled two balloons. We put yellow color in one balloon and left one plain. We wondered what would happen if we colored the water. We put things in the water and wondered what would happen. We put in glitter, spider rings, foam shapes, paper clips, and even peppermint candy. The candy turned the water pink and green.
Then we put all the containers outside. It was very cold outside. The water in the trays began to freeze and we saw crystals on top of the water.
We went to music and when we came back we checked outside. We had ice!
The balloons were hard but we could hear water inside when Mrs. Knee shook them. We wanted to see inside the balloon. Mrs. Knee cut off the balloon. We noticed:
The glitter was stuck into the ice
The spider rings were stuck.
The colored water froze and so did the clear.
Everything was hard and cold and shaped like the containers.
A ball of ice shaped like a balloon
A hole in the top of the ice
Water was inside the ice ball.
One was yellow and the other was clear
The ice was thin.
The water came out of the hole and now the ice looked like a bowl.
We wanted to make more ice balloons and let all the water freeze. Mrs. Knee filled more balloons and we put different colors in the water.
We left the balloons outside all day and all night so they could get hard. The next day we brought them inside and Mrs. Knee cut open the balloons. Some ice balloons were cracked in half. some had big cracks.
The ice balloons were melting inside. We know that salt makes ice melt on the road. We wondered what salt would do to our ice balloons. We hoped they would not melt away.
We noticed:
The salt made lines on the ice.
We saw spikey line things inside the ice.
The ice looked pretty.
The towel on the table was getting wet from the ice. The ice was melting.
Our hands got wet.
We wonder what the spikey line things are in the ice. We wonder why the ice balloons had cracks. What do you think?
This is what we did with our ice balloons.

We are very lucky to have lots of outdoor places to play at our school. We are also lucky that we can take the time to play and enjoy the outdoors. It was a beautiful day to be outside and the snow was just right for making things. Jack Hutchinson, our wonderful Thursday afternoon volunteer joined us as we worked together to create some amazing things in the snow. As you watch our movie, look for the ways we are working together and helping friends. We learn how to cooperate and how to be friends when we take time to build and create. Look for our smiles too. We were having fun!

Our big buddies met with Mrs. Campelia, our physical education teacher to learn about activities that would be good to do with 5 and 6 year olds. They planned wonderful activities to do with us. Some of the big buddies showed us things that they can do with the materials. It was like a show. It was a fun afternoon. We especially like the parachute. We are wondering what we will do next time when we get together with our big buddies.

Our gingerbread houses are a direct follow up to the reading of several versions of the runaway food. We read about the Gingerbread Girl, the Gingerbread Boy, the Gingerbread Baby and even a variation that involved a Runaway Pancake. Mrs. Marrinan brought us a story from Australia called the the Lamington Man. We noticed the setting - country, city ( yes - New York City), farm, and forest. We discussed the ways the runaway character was tricked and eventually caught - except for the Gingerbread Girl, who is one smart cookie.
In the Jan Brett version of the Gingerbread Baby, Matti used a gingerbread house to capture the baby. The children drew plans for decorating the roofs and walls of their houses and followed their plans with various patterns of candy. The pattern work was connected to our math activities. Lots of thoughtful work and effort went into creating each house.

What happens when it snows during the night and then it rains for most of the day? You have very disappointed KinderKids who were hoping to play outdoors in the snow. Did they cry? Goodness no!!! They brought the snow inside and had fun anyway. Playing with snow inside was fun but we are hoping for many days of outside snow play this winter.

We love to play outdoors and our favorite place to play is in the woods. We have fun playing together and everyone get along. We build things, look for salamanders, play imaginary games, and have fun. Sometimes Mrs. Laskowsky's class joins us and there is plenty of room for everyone in the woods. The video shows what we did together a few days ago.
Can you see what we are learning when we play together in the woods?

The KinderKids shared their hopes and dreams for kindergarten at the beginning of the year. There are many things they hope to do and learn: play with friends, go on trips, learn about water creatures, learn about math, paint pictures, use an iPad, learn to spell, make new friends and go to the ocean. Look at each person's hopes on their own blog. The KinderKids needed to figure out how to work and play together so that everyone gets to do all the things they hope to do this year.
Mrs. Knee asked this question - What kind of rules do we need so we can all do lots of things. The KinderKids had many ideas and Mrs. Knee made a long list of what everyone said. There were too many rules to remember. Someone noticed that some of the rules were about taking care of friends. Some rules were about taking care of the school and our room and the earth. There were even rules about taking care of ourselves. Now the KinderKids have only 3 rules - Take care of yourself, Take care of friends, Take care of the classroom, the school and the Earth. Three rules are easy to remember. The KinderKids also know what kinds of things they need to do to follow the rules. We made a movie to show everyone about our rules.

We read "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynold's and then we wanted to make lots of dots. We tried many different ways to make them. We used paint, and markers, and colored pencils. We made Dot Pins with Sculpey to wear on Dot Day. We used coffee filters, markers and water to make some interesting dots. Even our Deerfield Fair Projects was a dot! We rolled colorful scrap paper and glued the rolls on our own silver circles. Then we glued the silver circles on a giant dot. Mrs. Laskowsky's class made some too. We are going to put this in the fair so everyone can see it. Maybe they will want to go and make their mark too.

Things have been very busy in the KinderKids classroom and Mrs. Knee has been busy too. That is why there have not been any new blog posts in a while. We worked hard on our bird projects and you will be able to see some of our work on our blogs. We are still interested in learning about birds so we are watching the Decorah Bald Eagles web cam. We are waiting for the first egg to hatch.
We celebrated Valentine's Day with a lunch in our classroom that our parents made for us. We even had a chocolate fountain. Yum! Then we opened our cards from our friends. It was a great day.
Our school had a Jump Rope for Heart activity. We did this with our 8th grade big buddies. We jumped for 45 minutes.
We learned about making maple syrup and went on a field trip to Mrs. Knee's house to see the maple trees, the buckets and spigots and the sugar house with the cupola.
Our latest project in being involved with the Flat Classroom Project. We will be working with other students in different parts of the world and getting to know them better. We made a video to help them know who we are and what we do. It is called our Handshake to others.

Today was our 100th day of school. We have 80 more days of school left. We are learning to count to 100 and we need to practice so we can get better at it. We made hats with 100 things on them. We also made necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal. We each have a small book with 100 animals. We had so many things to count. It was a fun day.
.
Shaun, Max and Owen used Sock Puppet on the iPad to show how to count to 100 by tens.
How do you celebrate 100 days of school?

There is still some snow in the woods and we had fun playing games and making houses with sticks. We are still wishing for lots of snow to fall but until that happens, we are happy to play in the woods.

Our big buddies came to our classroom and did a turkey project with us. They traced our hand and helped us cut it out. They had Mr. Chouinard's hand print and their own hand print cut out. When we went for a walk in the woods around the school, we collected many colorful things. We sorted them by color and then glued them on paper that matched the colors. We had to look carefully to find the different colors.
We had some milkweed fluff and it reminded someone of feathers. Mrs. Knee thought we could use the leaves and sticks and pine cones to make a turkey. We used crushed leaves for the body. Big leaves and pine cones were for the big feathers. We used lots of milkweed fluff too. We had to add that outside because it was floating everywhere. Max had the idea for the eye. Can you tell how we made it?

The Kinderkids had so much fun making monsters, they were eager to try one more way. Using paper towel and toilet paper rolls and cut out pieces of paper, their monsters once again showed their creativity. The idea for this came from an article in Parent's magazine. You can find more informationhere.
These are just three examples of the Tube Monsters. Look on each child's blog for pictures of the other monsters.

We are reading lots of books about monsters. Two of our favorites are If You're a Monster and You Know It and There was an Old Monster. These books inspired us to make our own colorful monsters. We drew and cut shapes for the head, body, arms and legs and glued them together. Then we added faces, horns, tails and other things to make our monsters look great.
After reading The Monster's Party by Joy Cowley, we decided to tell about things that our monsters can do. We tried to think of different things the monsters could do. We hope you like our monsters and like our ideas for what they can do.

We have added one more routine to our Daily 5 work. It is called Listen to Reading. We have lots of stories on iPods and on the computer to choose from. We use Tumble Books on the computer. We can hear the words and follow along when we watch the screen. With the stories on the iPods, we listen to the words and turn the pages of our books when we hear the signal. Listening to Reading is something else that helps us become better readers.

We are learning to write stories about what we know and things we do. We wrote this message together during our writing time. It is about the monarch butterflies we have in our room.
We had some monarch caterpillars. The butterflies lay eggs on leaves and they hatch into caterpillars. They eat leaves. They eat milkweed.
The caterpillars go into a chrysalis. First they turn into a J.The chrysalis is green and then it turns black. When it is black that means it's almost ready to hatch the butterfly. When the butterflies come out, they hang upside down to pump up their wings. When they hatch their wings are all crumpled up and they have a fat body. If the butterfly is a boy, it has a black dot on each wing. The girls don't have any black dots.
We let the butterflies go. A butterfly flew on to Shaun's pants and then flew to Max's shirt. Some of the kids got to hold the butterfly. The butterflies are going to fly to Mexico. The butterflies have to go there because it is too cold here in Deerfield. They rest in trees. You can watch them in the sky. The butterflies will come back. When they come back we might find them again. We put tags on the butterflies to help the scientists know where they came from.

Every day after snack, the KinderKids doMe Moves . Some people don't know about Me Moves so we thought we would show you what we do. We watch the DVD on our white board and follow the motions. Some of the KinderKids like to do Me Moves on top of our Bilibo chairs and keep their balance. Me Moves helps us relax and get ready for our work. We do math after Me Moves.
We even teach our families how to do MeMoves.

We are learning to read and write during our literacy time. We use Read To Self so we can learn to read. We have been practicing what to do during our Read to Self time and we have discussed what it should look like. When we started, we could only read for 2 minutes. We are working to build STAMINA and now we read for 11 minutes. We are proud of our work and we made a video to show you what we can do.

We are learning to write our names neatly and correctly. We used Animation-ish by FableVision to help us practice and to animate our work. This short movie shows the work of some of the KinderKids.

Last week, we read a story by Peter Reynold's called The Dot. It is about making your mark and becoming good at something. Today was International Dot Day and we made our dots with Sculpey polymer clay. We mixed lots of colors together to make the beautiful designs. The teachers will glue pins on them so we can wear them home to show our families.

There is a wonderful group of students who go to school in Brisbane, Australia. Their teacher is Mrs. Marrinan and they are the 2M Gems. Mrs. Knee and Mrs. Marrinan are good friends and the Gems became good friends with last year's class. The Gems want to be friends with us too.

We are studying geometry. We went for a walk around the school to find shapes. We took pictures and chose some of them to put in this VoiceThread. Can you help us find more shapes in our pictures?

Earlier in the year, we started a wiki and asked our friends to add their names to it. We counted the names for each letter and made this wordle with the information. The largest letter had the most names. Which letter had the fewest names? Do you know why some letters are missing?
You can find a wordle for each letter on the Names Wiki.

Throughout the year, we celebrate many birthdays. Our families provide a special snack. If someone's birthday is in the summer when we aren't in school, we will celebrate their birthdays in June.

Our interest in Australia originated through our blogging work and connections with the 2M Gems in Brisbane. After skyping with them and learning how they celebrate Christmas in their summertime, we became interested in other Australian things, especially the animals that live in Australia. Mrs. Knee filled the classroom library with many fiction and non-fiction books about animals from Australia. Some of the books were sent to us from Australia by Mrs. Marrinan. We chose an animal we were interested in learning about and thought of questions we had about each animal animal. Our work begins…
Our Animals in Oz wiki is the tool we used to keep information about each of the animals. Each page has a link to sites with words, pictures and video that would help us learn. We used the wiki in class to help us learn about the animals. Many people contributed to our wiki. Children worked at home and added information. Mrs. Marrinan and the 2M Gems posted first hand information from their experiences from living in Australia. Another Australian teacher heard about our project and gladly offered some pictures. Mrs. Knee's daughter, Dr. Fusaro has worked in Australia for scientific research, added her pictures and writing.
We also used skype to connect with Dr. Fusaro and Mrs. Marrinan. They answered questions and shared information about our animals. When we finished our research and our projects, we displayed them at our school's Curriculum Night. Our parents came to see our work and we skyped with the 2MGems to share what we had learned. These videos are shorter versions of our skype conversations. We wanted you to know how we learn. In another post, we will share our projects.
from Mrs. Knee... Through this work, the children learned to investigate and share information. They found that they could learn from each other and from people around world. They learned research skills and how to represent their understandings in multiple ways. These are life long skills. While the Curriculum Night display was our culminating event for our Australian Animal study, we are by no means finished with the learning. My wish is that children continue to be life long learners, connect and learn from others and take risks to try new things. Our work continues…

We are learning jump rope skills so we can take part in a Jump Rope for Heart event that raises money for the American Heart Association. To help get us ready and inspired, our physical education teacher had a school assembly with a jump rope team from an elementary school. They are called the Hot Shots.
The Kinderkids were inspired and couldn't resist doing a little jumping during the show. We can't wait for our Jump Rope for Heart event. Do you have one at your school?

After the KinderKids heard about Chris' sled dog racing, they were curious to learn more. Chris invited his grandparents to the classroom to tell about sled dog racing. They brought a sled and even Babe, the dog that helped Chris win his races. Thank you Grandpa Bob , Nana and Babe for helping us learn.

Christopher went to Tamworth for the sled dog races. This was his first race and he won the race. He told us that he won a ribbon. His dog's name is Babe. It belongs to Grampa Bob and Nana. They are coming to our class to teach us about sled dog racing. There is a big race in Alaska called the Iditarod. It is starting soon. Are you interested in the Iditarod? We are!

We read the comment from Mrs. Durff. She wanted to see Mrs. Knee make a snow angel and Mr. Bogush wondered if Mrs. Knee was inside keeping warm while we play in the snow. Mrs. Knee loves to play in the snow. She didn't live where it snowed until she came to New Hampshire for college. We helped her learn how to make a snow angel. It is a good thing we are having so many snow storms this year. There is plenty of snow for all of us.
