Making Valentines on PhotoPeach
In reading today some of us read Kip The Ant, some read The Big Ram and others read The Big Big Van. We listened to a story about making Valentines and after a quick lesson on symmetry, we cut out symmetrical hearts. Once we got pretty good at that, we made hearts galore, as we made our bags for our Valentine cards.

Wednesday and Thursday on PhotoPeach
What would you do if you lived on an island and you wanted to visit your friend who lived on an island across the ocean which was filled with swimming crocodiles? How would you get over to the other island? That was the question I posed to the chidren before we listened to the Indonesian folktale Counting Crocodiles, about a Deer Mouse who had just that problem. Ask your child how the mouse solved his problem? (hint: he tricked the crocodiles into lining up forming a bridge to cross over)After listening to the story we illustrated and wrote about the problem and solution in the story.
In reading today we played Phoneme "Top It", a game played much like the card game "War". The children had to count the number of sounds in words and then decide which picture had more sounds.
I hope you are all remembering to read for PARP. In all my years teaching, this was the first year I have ever had a class with 100% participation...keep up the great work PM class! Let's see if we can have 100% all 3 weeks!

Tuesday on PhotoPeach
Yesterday we reread Walking Through The Jungle. After reading it we broke into groups to create a word web for the different places from the story: the river, the ocean the mountins, the desert and the artic. For PARP we had DEAR time with our favorite stuffed animals.
Today we built short /o/ words: -ox, -ot and -op words. We listened to the story So Say The Little Monkeys, a Brazilian folk tale. In Writing Workshop we continued our small moment stories. Oh and it was Pajama Day :) (Pictures will be posted tomorrow...computer problems!)
Congratulations to the latest student in the PM class for mastering all 50 Star Words!

Monday on PhotoPeach
In reading today we read the book Wake Up Groundhog! We listened to a story about Phil the Groundhog and learned a song about Groundhog's Day. (Be on the lookout for videos of us singing the song as soon as it gets approved) We tossed a "coin" (a paper plate with the picture of a groundhog on one side and a picture of the groundhog and his shadow on the other side)to predict whether or not the ground hog will see his shadow tomorrow or not. The results in the morning were that he would see his shadow. I had to throw the tie breaking toss in the afternoon class for a prediction that he would not see his shadow. We also graphed Do You Want The Groundhog to See His Shadow? We do NOT want him to see his shadow was won hands down in both classes!
A BIG thank you to the PTA for giving each of us a new book to read!

Bee Mine on PhotoPeach
In reading on Friday we played Star Word checkers. I made the game from a large checkers game from the dollar store. You can make your own version at home, the boys and girls seemed to really enjoy playing it.
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we made some B'ville Bees for our "Bee Mine" bulletin board.
In writing workshop we continued writing Small Moment stories. We learned that it is helpful to talk over our pieces with a buddy on occasions, so we hooked up with a buddy by matching an Olympic sports picture puzzle piece with someone else.

Morning Snowmen on PhotoPeach
In reading today we worked on short /i/ word family puzzles. We listened to the book Snowballs by Louis Elhart and finished up an accordion book retelling Elmer. The boys and girls had to read the sentences (with help) and put them in order. I am amazed at how well some of the girls and boys can figure out some difficult words!
In math we learned and played The Disappearing Train game. We started off with a "train" ten unifix cubes long. We rolled a cube that had either -1, -2, or -3 written on them. The winner was the one who ended up with no unifix cubes left.

Wednesday on PhotoPeach
In reading today we practiced segmenting words as we Graphed Sounds. We listened to the story Elmer about an elephant who was sad because he didn't look like all the other elephants and thought they were laughing at him. Ask your child how Elmer tried to solve his problem.
In math we practiced adding on as we rolled dice and counted the dots.
Just a reminder: Our first report cards will be coming home on Friday! Please read and discuss them with your child and return the comment card and report card envelope by Monday. (you get to keep the report cards)

Tuesday on PhotoPeach
Today in reading some of us read The Dig, others read What Is in The Box and Tap, Tap, Tap. We listened to the big book Walking Through the Jungle and learned the letter W.
In math we started out with a shoe sort. After sorting our shoes we demonstrated if we knew how to tie shoes or not. Those who can tie, signed our I Know How To Tie poster. They are my "go to" helpers for when we need to have our shoes tied. We also played What's the Missing Number game, as we learn two digit numbers.
And for PARP we had time for Bobsled DEAR (drop everything and read) reading. We opted to read in 4 man bobsled teams!
