What is fresh water pollution??

Water pollution occurs when waste products or other substance dramatically change the physical, thermal, chemical or biological chareristics of water which affects the living things in the water! Some sources are sewage, chemicals, and heat. We wont have any fresh water to drink if everyone keeps polluting our water supply. Fresh water needs to stop being polluted by everyone! We would have no fresh water animals.

What can we do to help??

We can try and stop people from throwing trash in the lakes and rivers; we can also help clean out all the garbage from them. We can tell people to carpool or ride the busses and not take your cars everywhere and putting a whole bunch of gas pollution in the air. By doing that everyone will stop polluting the air and affecting everyone around us. We can help by trying to pick up a lot of the garbage on sidewalks and everywhere around us. We can try and get the word out about what would happen if everyone not just one person, littered.

                                        What are nitrates and

How do they get in our water supply??

Nitrates are a chemical that is good for animals and plants but unhealthy for humans. They simply would make a grown man incredibly sick within hours. They help plants and animals to get nourishment. They get in our water supply by fertilizers because when it rains the fertilizer slides down hills and into our rivers. Rivers are most of our water supply.

What effects do high levels of nitrates

                                                    Have on people??

It could cause illnesses or death with four months olds. It could cause blue baby syndrome. High levels of nitrates can be harmful to humans and animals health. The highest amount of nitrates drinking water is 10mg/L. Nitrates in the water supply can hurt you by giving you illness and the possible chance of death!

What are point and non-point sources of pollution and

What are the differences between the two??

Point sources are a specific source of pollution. Also point sources can be identified. It’s a source when you know where the pollution is coming from. A non-point is when you don’t know where it’s coming from! The difference is point can be found and non-point is too hard to find and non-point is more than one source! Non-point and point are similar because they are kinds of pollution.

What can we do to prevent Fresh Water Pollution??

We can prevent Fresh Water Pollution in a number of ways. One way is, we could stop thinking that just because

It’s a little pond or river that if you throw something into it, it won’t matter! But, it does matter to the things in the water

Mostly because it could spread out to everyone’s waters!    It not only affects the animals and plants in the water but

It also affects us, humans. Because were the ones in the first place who caused this.

Water Pollution Pamphlet
By Hadlei, Jacob, and Alina

In this pamphlet you will be reading about freshwater pollution and nitrates.
Plus you will also be reading about some main sources of freshwater pollution. You will also be reading about point and non-point sources of pollution. Have fun reading this pamphlet.

What is freshwater pollution?
Freshwater pollution occurs when waste products or other substances change the physical, thermal, chemical or biological characteristics of the water. Affecting living species and reducing the water’s beneficial uses. A river is polluted when a substance, which degrades the water quality, enters the water and alters its natural functions. Some sources of water pollution are farmers using fertilizer and it getting into groundwater and it getting into water. Also sewers sometimes run off into rivers, creeks, and/or lakes.

What are nitrates and are they bad?
A nitrate is natural compound in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life. Too much can be a problem for plants and animals. It is also a component of chemicals and manure-based fertilizers. So nitrates can be bad if there are too much of them in your drinking water.

How can WE prevent water pollution?
We can prevent water pollution by picking up after ourselves. For instance pick up trash on the side of the road when we go on walks. Or maybe recycling whenever we can. Reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible. Use chemical at least 200 feet away from main water sources. Those are some of the ways we can prevent water pollution.

How do Nitrates get in the water?
Nitrates can sometimes enter water sources in areas of high fertilizer use. When too much nitrates get into water it can be harmful to plants and animals. Other ways that nitrates can get into water if there are high sewage use and feedlots near by. Those are some ways that nitrates can get into water.
What is point and non-point sources of pollution?
A point source is a specific source of pollution that can be identified. A non-point source is a wildly spread source of pollution that cant be tied to a specific point of origin. The difference between the two is that a point source CAN be identified. A non-point source CAN’T be identified easily. Those are point and non-point sources of pollution.

In this pamphlet you read about fresh water pollution. You also read about nitrates and how they affect us and plant life and animals. Plus you read about point and non-point sources of pollution. I hope you enjoyed reading this pamphlet of ours.

Thanks from,
Hadlei, Jacob and Alina

Braden, Chelsey And Heidi’s Pamphlet of WATER POLLUTION!!!

oiled bird

What is water pollution?

Water pollution is when water that was once clean is now contaminated.

Which now is neither suitable for drinking nor healthy. It kills fish, plants and animals.

There are some creatures that are tolerant to water pollution, but most are not.

Urban areas have potential to pollute water in many ways. Run off from streets carries oil, rubber and heavy metals into rivers, lakes and streams.

This is the problem!

Trash, car exhaust, oil, fertilizer, pesticides and household cleaners are effecting

Lakes, rivers and streams. They are the main source of pollution, and we are causing our own failure. When we use cars every day we are polluting because of the exhaust. Also when we use cars if they are not properly cared for then they can leak oil witch is a source of pollution. When we litter we are causing pollution.

Consequences of water pollution.

The ocean sustains life on earth its very important. They affect and moderate temperatures and dramatically influence global climate.

The ocean recycles and cleans the air we breathe. Bacteria are produced by pollution, which form a layer of slime on fish and plants. This results in decreased oxygen and increased disease. These are the consequences. Industries release pulp, paper, chemicals and acid rain. Ask yourself if we really want to release this into our world.

What can we do to improve quality after it has been polluted?

People need to be educated about proper ways to dispose of waste.

Showing each other where waste goes and the problem they can create in our watersheds.

People need to work together to help improve water quality. This is an effective way to get the message across. This is also a way to keep our earth clean.

What are some actions that can be taken to prevent water pollution?

Solutions can be finding ways for the urban areas to reduce both its dependents on pollutants. Also trying to get them to reduce the amount of pollutants it produces. One more way is to properly recycle or dispose of pollutants before it contaminates soil, water or air.Us the people can take simple steps to prevent water pollution. They can take care of their vehicles to prevent the oil from the cars from going into rivers, streams, lakes and oceans This is a good way to prevent water pollution.

What are nitrates and how do they get into our water supply?

Nitrates are natural compound present in all ecosystems. It one of the chemicals essential plant life.

All though this is essential to plants too much of it can also be a problem to plants and animals.

It’s also a component of a chemical in manure base fertilizers.Nitrates can enter watercourses and ponds from sources such as areas of high fertilizer life stock feed lots pastures and sewage.

What effects do high nitrate levels have on people?

Excessive nitrate can result in restriction of oxygen to the blood stream.

Infants under the age of 4 months lack the enzyme necessary to correct this condition.

Ground water provides drinking water supply to more then half of the population of the United States.

Sometimes these under ground water supplies can be “polluted” with nitrates can be potentially dangerous to people with conditions.

Public supply wells are usually large wells providing water to hundreds of people within towns and cities. Domestic supply wells usually provide

Water to a single family on their landlord’s property were the well is located. Nitrate concentrations for these two types of wells are commonly quite different.

What is considered to be a safe level for nitrates in drinking water?

The EPA has established a maximum contaminate level of ten m/g/l as nitrogen for nitrate in drinking water.

This is considered a safe level. If this “rule” is not followed there could be extreme consequences.

Fortunately for us we have a very good concentration of this. EPA has formed a specific way of keeping concentrations.

This is a very important job.

What should a person do if there are high levels in their water supply?

Nitrate concentrations in ground water generally are highest in parts of the northeast, mid west and the west coast. Concentrations generally are lowest in parts of the southeast.

This is just general information about were nitrates are highest and highest.

Regional differences are related to differences in soil drainage. Properties and agricultural practices. Nitrate in ground water is highest in areas of well-drained soils

And intensive cultivation of row crops. People could put their water through filters to clean their water and reduce risks.

What can be done to help prevent nitrates from entering our water supply?

By reducing the amount of fertilizer being applied to fields and residential lawns. By doing this we can reduce the potential

for nitrates entering our local watercourses after rainstorms. Tile drainage systems could be placed deeper into the soil. Thereby

Reducing the chance that nitrates will be carried into them.

Watercourses can be fenced to prevent livestock from entering our water supply.

What Is Water Pollution?

Water pollution is made of  terrible waste products or other substances. This happens when physical, thermal, chemical, or biological characteristics of the water adversely affecting living species and reducing the waters beneficial uses.

“When pollutants enter a river system from a range of land uses across its catchments. Often, poor water quality is the result of the combined effects of a variety of activities in the catchments. Some pollution comes from sources which can be pin pointed for example a factory or intensive agriculture discharging its waste into a drain.”  18-4.pdf (page 1 0f 6) River and estuary pollution.

A nitrate is a natural compound present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life but a lot can be a problem for plants and animals. Nitrate is also a component chemical and manure based fertilizers. would you want this cute little polar bear to die swimming in water pollution?

How Does Water Pollution Affect You?

If you pollute the oceans sustain life on this planet we wouldn’t have any fresh water to drink. It would be hard to breath. Also if you drink excessive level of nitrate, it can cause you extreme illness, death symptoms, blueness of skin, and even trouble breathing.  Nitrates include potential effects from life time exposure at the levels above MCL. The safe level for nitrates in drinking water is 10-kg (22 lb.) For children consuming water amount 1 litter per day. 10-day exposure to 10 MG/L total nitrate/nitrite. To bring down the level of nitrate in your water, you should use less amount of fertilizer so that the water will be only a little polluted. If you don’t use fertilizer at all that’s great! Tile drainage system can be placed deep in the soil. There for it reduced the chance of nitrate entering the river system.

What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has been polluted?

Solutions involve finding sustainable ways for the urban area to reduce both its dependence on pollutants and the amount of pollutants. You could also pick up the piece of litter when you see it.

How Can I Help Prevent Water Pollution?

1.You could maintain routine surveillance of the waterways.

2.you could monitor water quality to detect signs of pollution or contamination.

3.You could also follow up complaints and concerns referred by the community.people cleaning up water pollution!

Braden, Chelsey And Heidi’s Pamphlet of WATER POLLUTION!!!

oiled sea bird

One more way is to properly recycle or dispose of pollutants before it contaminates soil, water or air.

Us the people can take simple steps to prevent water pollution.

They can take care of their vehicles to prevent the oil from the cars from going into rivers, streams, lakes and oceans

This is a good way to prevent water pollution.

What are nitrates and how do they get into our water supply?

Nitrates are natural compound present in all ecosystems. It one of the chemicals essential plant life.

All though this is essential to plants too much of it can also be a problem to plants and animals.

It’s also a component of a chemical in manure base fertilizers.

Nitrates can enter watercourses and ponds from sources such as areas of high fertilizer life stock feed lots pastures and sewage.

What is considered to be a safe level for nitrates in drinking water? oiled eagle

This section is mainly about what is fresh water pollution and what we can do to help. We got most of our information from the water web quest site.

WHAT IS FRESH WATER
POLLUTION?

Water pollution is when you dump waste, garbage, radioactive waste, and sewer sludge in the water and that can really harm the animals and even us.

Some sources of water pollution are from oil spills and drainage pipes and even people in our community dropping pollutants in to our water supply.

There are some consequences of water pollution such as hurting animals, getting in our water supply, and blue baby syndrome.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP IMPROVE
THE WATER QUALITY WHEN IT’S
POLLUTED?

We can tell people in the community to recycle and properly dispose of their garbage. By doing that they will not dump it in the water.

We can take actions to help clean up our planet. Such as picking up waste, pick up your own litter, and recycle. Things like that can help with a lot of the fresh water pollution.

NITRATE INFO

High nitrate levels can result in a reaction of oxygen transport in the blood stream. Infants of the age of 4 months and under lack the enzyme to correct this condition. Fatalities from methemoglobinema (blue baby syndrome) occur infrequently and are most common in rural areas.

A considerable level of nitrates in drinking water is a maximum contaminated level (MCL) of 10 mg/L (as nitrogen) for nitrate in drinking water.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO
PREVENT NITRATES FROM
ENTERING OUR WATER SUPPL?

Tile drainage systems could be placed deeper into the soil thereby reducing the chance that nitrate will be carried into them.

Water pollution is when humans dump garbage, Oil, fish guts, and fertilizer into rivers, lakes, and creeks. One of the consequences of freshwater pollution is the good fish will die, and we won’t get to go fishing in the creeks, rivers, and lakes.

After the water has become polluted we should dispose our toxic substances carefully. Instead of dumping oil and paint down the drawn we should take the toxic waste to a site that collects hazard waste. What can you do to prevent pollution from entering our lakes, rivers, and, creeks. Recycle Your garbage correctly, help clean up polluted Areas, and dispose garbage/waste properly. What are nitrates? Nitrates are natural compound present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential To plant life but too much can be a Problem for plants and animals. What effects do high nitrate levels Have on people? We wont have certain Animals and plants. We wont have good drinking water. What is a safe level of nitrate in drinking Water? Environmentally protection agencies The epee has established a maximum contaminated level {mcl} of 10 mg/l The nitrate level in Colorado is 13.3 Mg/l, and in Eastern Europe is 50-100 Mg/l. What should a person do if there are high nitrate levels in their water supply? By putting a drained water system deeper into the soil. By Reducing the amount of soil and fertilizer that Is put on farms and lawns. What can be down to prevent nitrates from entering our water supply? By not putting a lot of fertilizer in to field sand lawns. NON-POINT*A non-point source of pollution is a form that is not easy to identify where its coming from. POINT*A point source of pollution is a form that is easy to pinpoint where its coming from. The difference between point and non-point pollution are most of the time non-point pollution comes from far away, and point pollution is normally is coming from factories and run off from roads.

Hi we are the team of Brittiney, Sophia, and Shantelle we are going to tell you about fresh water pollution there will be answers to questions you have hope we can answer all the questions you have, enjoy the pamphlet!

What is water pollution?
Water pollution occurs when waste products or other substances change the physical thermal, chemicals or biological characteristics of the water, adversely affecting living species and reducing the water’s beneficial uses.

What are some of the sources of water pollution?
Physical thermal, chemicals or biological characteristics are some sources of water pollution. After the water has becomes polluted we should dispose our toxic substances
Carefully.

What are some consequences of water pollution?
All the garbage from people littering can get washed down to the ocean making animals sick and they can die. Also the ocean can flood the earth by being over flowed. When people dump their garbage in the ocean animals such as fish, birds, and more die or suffer from water pollution from human’s filth like plastic, medal, and Styrofoam.

What can be done to improve the quality of water for becoming polluted?
Solutions involve finding sustainable ways of the urban area are to reduce both its dependence on pollutants and the pollutants it produces and to properly recycle or dispose of pollutants before they contaminate soil, water, or air.

What are some actions that can be taken to help prevent water from becoming polluted?
By reducing fertilizers being applied to fields and was residential lawn, we can reduce the potentials for nitrates entering into local watercourses after rainstorms tile draining sources could be placed deeper into soil there by reducing the chances that nitrates will be carried into them.

What are nitrates and how do they get into our water supply?
Nitrates can enter watercourse and ponds from sources such as areas of high fertilizer used, livestock, feedlots, pastures, and sewage treatment areas. Nitrate is applied to fields and lawn’s as a nutrient for plants nitrate is a natural compound present in all ecosystems.

What effect do high nitrates levels have on people?
Some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of EPA’s standard over many years could experience skin damage and have an increase risk of getting cancer. It causes blue baby syndrome. The water pollution control act of 1972, later known as the clean water act, mandated improvements in sewage treatment technology, to be funded jointly by the federal state and local government.

What is considered to be the safe level of nitrates in drinking water?

19.8% is mostly found in drinking water.

What can be done to help prevent nitrates from entering our water supply?

We can put purifying tablets into the creeks and pipes so it won’t have any effect on fish. They have to be educated to show kids where the waste should go. It is also community relations.

What should a person do if there are high nitrate levels in their water supply?
They could purify the water, drink fresh tap water or boil it. Tile drainage systems could be placed deeper into the soil there by reducing the chance that nitrates will be carried into them.

A. Oil is one source of pollution, and from the ships dumping large amounts of waste into the ocean is another.

What are some of the consequences of water pollution?

A. Animals from the ocean and land that drink the water get sick and could die. They die from people dumping waste in the water.

What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has been polluted?

A. Pick up trash around the water and recycle properly. Get people educated about water pollution.

What are some actions that can be taken to help prevent water from being polluted?

A. Recycle properly. And add in less household cleaners and chemicals. Don’t throw trash from your boat into the water.

What are nitrates and how do they get in are water?

A. Nitrate is a natural compound present in all ecosystem. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life but too much can be a problem for plants and animals. It is also a component of chemical and mature based fertilizer.
Nitrates can enter watercourses and ponds from sources such as areas of high fertilizer use, livestock feedlots and pastures, and sewage treatment areas.

What effects do high nitrates levels have on people?

A. Well it caused blue baby syndrome that put big effect on people.
.

What is considered to be the safe level for nitrates in drinking water?

A. Under 10 mg /l no.

What should a person do if there are high nitrates in their water supply?

A. If you are pregnant try to avoid drinking water on a daily basis from that source. You should call your water supply company right away.

What can be done to prevent nitrates from entering our water supply?

A. Reduce the high fertilization dig tile drains deeper in the ground. This will prevent nitrates in your water.

What are point and non point sources of pollution and what are the differences between the two?

A. A point source of pollution is when you know what’s causing it. A non point source is when you don’t know what causing it. The difference is that one can be traced and one can’t.

We hope that you try and get people educated about fresh water pollution because it is becoming a huge problem.

What is water pollution?
When waste products or other substances change the physical, thermal, chemical, or biological characteristics of the water. So then adversely affecting living species and reduces the waters beneficial uses.
What are some of the sources of water pollution?
Pollution is caused by PCB’s, DDT, chloride, and erosion by going into the water
What are some of the consequences of water pollution?
It harms the environment because pesticides and fertilizers get in the water and poison the fish. Then people eat the poisoned fish and die.
What can be done to improve the quality of water after its been polluted.
You can properly recycle or dispose of water after it has been polluted.
What are some actions that can be taken to help prevent water from being polluted?
You can prevent water pollution by cleaning lakes and rivers. And also disposing of toxic substances carefully, and chemicals like motor oil should never be pored down the drain.
What are nitrates and how do they get in our water supply?
Nitrates are chemical compounds that contain polyatomic ion nitrates, which have one atom of nitrogen and three atoms of oxygen. That gets in our water by fertilizers being washed into our water.
What affects do high nitrates have on people?
High nitrates cause an increase of cancer and poisons young children.
What is considered a safe level of nitrates in our drinking water?
Researchers suggest a level of 100mg/l of nitrates
What should a person do if their are high nitrates in there drinking water?
Don’t give the contaminated water to young children. Then find and reduce the source, and don’t boil the water it just adds more nitrates.
What can be done to help prevent nitrates from entering our water?
Don’t use a lot of fertilizer so it doesn’t pollute our water.
So what are point and non point sources of pollution and what are the differences between the two?
A point source is of pollution that you can find and a non point source is harder to find so the difference is you can find point sources of pollution easer that non point sources.

              Water Pollution

Water Pollution affects all life living around. It can kill the fish and other life in the water, it can contaminate plants, and limit the water supply for communities. Water pollution is either garbage or natural chemicals or substances that get into the water and make it undrinkable and unable to support

life.

       How does Water Become Polluted?

Some sources of water pollution are litter, oil spills,

Factory waste, city sewage waste, ect. You can improve the state of a polluted body of water by picking up garbage, trying to fix the source of it, and cleaning out clearly contaminated water by removing it. To prevent water pollution you can recycle, educate others about prevention, and

Contain harmful liquids like oil.

                    What are Nitrates?

Nitrate is a natural compound present in all ecosystems, It is essential to plant life but too much can be a problem for plants and animals.

For people, drinking too much nitrate can result in oxygen restriction in the bloodstream. Kids under 2 months cannot have enough enzyme to correct the condition. The max drinking level of nitrate is 10mg

Point and non-point Sources of pollution

A point source of pollution would be something like a

Sewage pipe flowing into a river or something else obvious and easy to fix. A  non-point source is less obvious. Like pollutants carried by runoff from a farm field, street, or construction site. Acid rain can also be a non point source. Pollution is absorbed into clouds and then is dumped into water with the rain.

How can we Reduce AND Prevent Nitrate

You can reduce nitrate levels by reducing the amount of fertilizer applied to fields and lawns . Tile drainage systems could be places deeper in the ground thereby reducing the chance of nitrate pollution. Fencing keeps livestock from flattening the vegetation around the cater courses of contaminating the water. When there are high nitrate levels in your water you should first, not drink it or use it. The less that gets in your house or your body the better. Second, warn others in your house or neighborhood about the problem so they don’t get sick and can help fix it. Last, you should try to find the source of the pollution like a leaking pipe or another source. If you can’t fix it yourself find others to help.

                           Conclusion

Water is one of the most important parts of our world. All animals and humans rely on it to live in or survive. You should care for it by not polluting and trying to keep our water clean.

IN THIS PAMPHLET YOU WILL FIND WHAT WATER POLLUTION IS, HOW IT AFFECTS US, AND HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT. YOU WILL ALSO LEARN ABOUT NITRATES, WHAT AFFECT IT HAS ON US, WHAT WE WILL DO WHEN THERE’S TO MANY NITRATES IN OUR WATER, AND WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT THIS.

What is fresh pollution?                           pollution being dumped

Well first of all the definition for water pollution is: polluting the natural environment is when waste products or other substances change

Physical the thermal or biological characteristics of the water adversely effecting living species and reducing the water’s beneficial uses.

What are the sources of  freshwater pollution?

One of the main sources are human influenced pollution’s.  These can relate to trash because it can fall into the water. Or car exhaust because it evaporates and then it rain’s and the rainwater gets carried into rivers or oceans. Another one is: fertilizers for crops that are in the field, than it rains and washes the fertilizers in to creeks, which eventually get to the oceans.

What are the consequences of water  pollution?animals killed by pollution

Some of the consequences are very bad!  Many things die and many things are destroyed. For example: the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. This oil spill killed eagles, aquarium life, murrelets, crows, gulls, otters, and much more life! Ever since this has happened necessary precautions have been taken.

What can we do to improve the water after it has been corrupted?

We can pick up trash if seen, we can throw away our trash away properly so it doesn’t pollute. And we can minimize our resources consumption.

What can we do to help prevent water pollution?

We can educate young children to help throw away trash, so in their generation will lean and it will keep getting passed down to the next generation and so forth. And we can encourage people not to pollute also.

What is a nitrate and how does it affect our water supply?    a nitrate

A nitrate is a natural compound present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemical’s  essential to plant life, but to much can be a problem for plant’s and animals. It is also a component of chemical and manure based fertilizers. Nitrates can enter water sources and ponds from sources such as areas of high fertilizers use, livestock feed lots, and sewage treatment areas.

What affect does high nitrate levels have on humans?

Excessive levels of nitrates in drinking water are very bad.  Some of the consequences are: serilous illness, stomach acks, and sometimes death!

What is the standerd level in drinking water?

Drinking water levels whitch are conciderd  “ safe “ for short term  exporsures: for a 20 lb baby it is conciderd a liter a day.

What should a person do if there is too many nitrates in there water supply?

They must take steps to reduce the amount of nitrates, so they are constently below that level

What can we do to keep nitrates out of our water?

Your wells need to be isolated from contamination and from the surface damage. Make sure it is in good repair to prevent surface from coming in.

What are point and non point sources of pollution, and what are differences between the two?

Point sources are sources of pollution that are obvious, and non point is pollution that you can’t see. The difference between the two is that:  point source you can point to it. And non point you can’t point to it.

Water Pollution

Why is water pollution so bad?

Water pollution is wear the bodies of water are polluted by bioaccumulated toxins from the environment over the life span that can no longer support full biological diversity, deforestation from acid rain, and many other effects. These effects are, of course, specific to the various contaminants

What are some sources  of water pollution?

Some of the sources of water pollution are many causes for water pollution but two general categories exist: direct and indirect contaminant sources. Direct sources include effluent outfalls from factories, refineries, waste treatment plants…that emit fluids of varying quality directly into urban water supplies. In the United States and other countries, these practices are regulated, although this doesn’t mean that pollution can’t be found in these waters.

       Consequence of water pollution

Some of the consequences of water pollution are once a bloom occurs; its negative effects can multiply rapidly. The green slime can foul up boat propellers and make swimming unpleasant. Nutrients can also cause weeds and other undesirable plants to flourish, increasing the problem. The algal bloom impairs water quality, and if the waterway is source for municipal water supplies, it can be expensive to removed impurities and odors. Masses of algae can wash up on shore, decaying and producing hydrogen sulfide gas, which smells like rotten eggs.

What can be improving the quality water pollution?

What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has become polluted is involve find sustainable ways for recycle or dispose of pollutants before they contaminate soil, water, or air. Preventing pollution in urban areas is often largely a public relations task. People need to be educated about proper ways to dispose of waste. Showing each other where waste goes and the problems it can create in our watersheds is an effective way to get the message across.

What are some actions to prevent pollution?

To prevent water from getting polluted are to be careful about what you throw down the sink or toilet. Don’t throw paints, oils, or other forms of litter down the drain. Use environmentally household products, such as washing power, household cleaning agents and toiletries. Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers. This will prevent runoff of the materials into nearby water sources.  Don’t throw litter into rivers and lakes, make sure it is safe to collect the litter and put it in a nearby dustbin.

   What are nitrates?

Nitrates are natural compound present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life but too much can be a problem for plants and animals. It is also a component of chemical and manure based fertilizers. Nitrates get into water supply from sources such as areas of high fertilizer use, livestock feedlots and pastures, and sewage treatment areas. A nitrate is applied for plants but during rainstorms it can be washed directly into nearby ponds and streams via surface flow or though tile drainage systems.

What are some high effects on nitrate?

Effects do high nitrate level have on people are that the fish have toxins in them because the sea is filled with toxins and when us humans fish and caught a fish that is filled with toxins. We eat the fish and now we have toxins in us after we ate the fish, then we may die.

Is nitrates in are drinking water?

Considering being the safe level for nitrates in drinking are levels in water can cause methemoglobinemia or blue bay syndrome, a condition found especially in infants less than six months. The stomach acid of an infant is not as strong as in older children and adults. This cause an increase in bacteria that can readily convert nitrate to nitrate.

What should a person do if there are nitrates in water supply?

Should a person do if there are high levels in their water supply is if you receive municipal water, then your municipality is required by law to regularly test and keep nitrates levels below the MCL for the public water supply. Municipality’s choices to reduce nitrate levels usually include the first three actions discussed.

What can we do to prevent nitrates from entering our water supply?

To help prevent nitrates from entering our water supply by limiting fertilizers use and apply only at appropriate times. Nutrients in chemical fertilizers can runoff into local waterways, and could enter sources of drinking water. If you must fertilize, always follow the application instructions. Never over fertilize. Control runoffs and soil erosion. Reducing erosion and preventing runoffs will reduce the amount of sediments and nutrients entering the watershed. Start a compost pile and recycle yard waste.this both reduces waste and creates a natural fertilizer for your lawn. Plant trees and shrubs. Both filter and control polluted runoff, take up nutrients, and reduce soil erosion.

                                               Water Web Quest

           What is water pollution?

Water pollution is a lake or a river that has garbage dumps, toxic waste and chemicals. The lake or river that has water pollution could kill many animals that are living in the water! Water pollution is also contaminates from automobiles like carries oil, rubber or heavy metals that come from run off streets. Consequences of pollution are loss of water plants and serious decline in wildlife interest.  Also people can’t use water to drink, cook or do other stuff.Non point source of water pollution!Greeen Stuffy

                           What is nitrate?

Nitrate is natural compound present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plants and animals. It is also a component of chemical and manure based fertilizer. Nitrate can get into our water supplies when there are rainstorms. It can be washed into near by streams, ponds and through tile drainage systems. The effect on high level nitrate on people is excessive. Nitrate can result in restriction of oxygen transport in the blood stream. Also  when there is lots of nitrates in the water and you drink to much, like if you are a baby  you can get methemoglobinemia which is the blue baby syndromes.

How much should we drink water that have nitrate?

The considered amount of nitrate in your drinking water is 10 mg/L that’s the maximum of nitrates in your water. Also people should not be drinking that water with nitrates in it, and should not be using that water to cook. Nitrate concentration in shallow ground water were higher in agricultural areas than in urban, forest, or rangeland areas.

These areas need to control the  nitrates in their water.

How does the nitrate get in our water supplies?

Nitrate can get into our water supplies when there are rainstorms. It can be wash directly into nearby pounds and streams or through tile drainage systems.

What is point and non-point sources?

A point source of pollution is a obvious pollution, like a pipe gushing sudsy water into the river. A non- point source is a widely spread source of pollution that can't be tied to a speific point of origin.

What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has become polluted?

People can help improve the quality of water after it has become polluted by properly recycling or depositing of pollutants before they contaminate soil, water, or air. We could also show each other where the waste goes. We could probably dispose of garbage into the garbage cans and dispose the recyclable stuff into the recycling bin. We could also help by not leaving our garbage behind and we could prevent water pollution by reducing amount of fertilizer lawns. We can reducing the potential for nitrate entering into local watercourses after rainstorms.

Water pollution brochure

by davidj

As you may have known other boring brochures provide the information and no opinions or interesting facts, and im not just talking in bold because I like to, this is a very good and expressed pamphlet. One small fact before we start, some obvious sources of pollution can be from pipes from factories or from a nearby trash collector. Now some non-obvious sources can be from evaporation causing acid rain or water pollution going down a small stream.

What Is Water Pollution?

Water pollution can be a nuisance to nature and humans, our water can be contaminated just by a little fertilizer or cleaning fluids, it can get in fish, and when the poisoned fish dies the poison passes on to the predator and it moves up the food chain until it hits us, if we don’t stop this our world will run out of inhabitants. Water pollution can be the contamination of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans and groundwater caused by human activities or caused also by nature, such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunami’s that can be harmful to most or certain organisms.

What are some sources of water pollution?

Well first there are human influenced pollution, fertilizers get squirted out and they form a tiny stream to the nearest river, lake or stream. There are also natural pollutants, animal waste from cows can some times end up in streams thus killing fish also there is a major pollutant, like I mentioned before this is the volcano, it can mix acids and materials and get in organisms life cycle.

What are some of the effects of pollution?

Pollution effects can span far but here are some MAIN effects, animal life can be severely harmed and the pollutions effect on them can ruin their habitat, prey/food, water and itself, animals aren’t the only people on this planet, WE can be effected, we EAT animals so if they are poisoned we get the same poison, also our water (of course) can be effected even though WE did it. Every one has a chain or life support system if it is harmed, it could die.

This bird is covered in what looks like snow but is accualy oil sadly =[

What can WE do to our water after it has been polluted?

There are many methods of cleaning the water, the biggest example is The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, they cleaned it up with LOTS of firemen and LOTS of high pressure water hoses, they made a machine and tried to use the hoses to scoop the oil in it. If you figure out a better way or like this idea PLEASE talk with the owners of that river/ocean shore/lake and ask them if you can take action.

These firemen are doing the right thing, the exxon oil spill was dissasterous! =]

What can be done to stop this horrid pollution?

A lot of you must be asking this question all the time, well one way of doing this is purifying the water and draining it into the wetlands, other methods of doing this is rerouting ditches and closing nearby garbage dumps close to contaminated water. Also you can talk to the government and ask them to make laws. MY idea (personally) is to make your own filter and send the blueprints to somebody you trust and build it together.

What ARE Nitrates And How Do They End Up In Our Waters?

A nitrate is a natural substance and is in all ecosystems, plants need it but too much of it can be a serious problem to them, nitrates are also in fertilizers. But how does this strange substance end up in our local waters? You know those farmers who use too much fertilizer and all their plants die? Well that is how they enter and then they can be evaporated and spread far and wide causing not only a problem for the farmer but for others.

What Effect Do High Nitrate Levels Have On Humans?

Were you wondering what would happen if you drank nitrates? It wont do much but if you put too much in then the results will be fatal on infants under 4 months old, THEY TURN BLUE=http://=http://!! It’s called baby blue syndrome, yes, it’s a syndrome.

What is the considered safe level for nitrates in drinking water?

Were you thinking, “Well what IS the safe level for drinking water?” apparently it is ten milligrams per liter. Amazing isn’t it? I thought so, lets move on…

What should YOU do if there are high nitrate levels in your water supply?

Well it might be dangerous so call your water agency and DO NOT DRINK IT   if you have any bad suspicions about the pesky nitrates in your water systems.

What can be done to stop nitrates from entering our water supply?

Some ways of doing this are to reduce the amount of fertilizers use in that area, also make your tile drainage systems deeper and build fences to fence off livestock from rivers/lakes/oceans.

Hello welcome to this pamphlet. It is about Fresh Water Pollution. Shane S. Henry L. and Deidra M. from Mr. G’s science class produced this. Fresh water Pollution is when oil, gas or any other chemical or object that is dangerous to the water and the species in it gets into the water.

What is water Pollution?

Water Pollution occurs when waste products or other substance change the physical, thermal  (heat), chemical or biological chrematistics of the water, adversity affecting species and reducing the waters beneficial uses.

What are some of the sources of water pollution?

The potential to pollute water in many ways run off from streets carries oil, rubbers heavy metals and other containments from automobiles. Untreated or poorly treated sewage can be low dissolved oxygen and high in pollutants. Such as fecal coli form bacteria it rates phosphors, chemicals, and other bacteria.

What are nitrates and how do they get into our water supply?

Natural Compound presents in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life. Much can be problem for plants and animals. It is also a composite of chemical and manure based fertilizers.

Properly recycle or dispose of pollutions before they contaminate soil water and air

The EPA has established a maximum contamination level of nitrates to be 10mg/L. That is not that high. And it is important that we only drink this much because we could get very sick and die!

What is considered to be the safe level for nitrates in drinking water?

What are some of the consequences of water pollution?

It affects and moderate temperatures and dramatically influence global climate. The oceans recycle and clean the air we breathe every day!

What should a person do if there are high nitrate levels in their water supply?

You should contact their heath recourses. You should only drink bottled water if you have heard that any one around you that has high nitrate level in their water supply.

What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has become polluted?

Solutions involve finding sustainable ways for the urban area to reduce both its independence on pollutions and the amounts of pollutions it produces. We need to do a lot of things including. Properly recycle or dispose of pollutions before they contaminate soil water and air.

What are some actions that can be taken to help prevent water from becoming polluted?

Get a big can or box and put it in the ocean then suck up all the pollution from the water. It will be like a filter in the ocean. We can also just not drive as much and the gas from the car will help to not pollute the water.

Point and non-point sources of pollution are the following. A point source is oblivious pollution like a pipe gushing sudsy water into a river. A non-point source is like a point source you cannot point at or see.

bird cored in oilFresh water pollution is when trash, fertilizer, and pesticides are dumped into fresh water sources. People are dumping headrest materials into the water and fish and drinking water are affected.

Some of the sources of water pollution are:

Oil, fertilizers, pesticides, rubbish, tires, fishing gear (nets,

Fishing line), plastic bags, and other materials that are harmful to animals that live in the water and out. For example, if a deer goes to take a drink there is a possibility that they might swallow a plastic bag and it will die because it will get stuck in its throat and the deer will suffocate.

The consequence of water pollution is water will get contaminated and there will not be as many animals as there are right now in the ponds, rivers, lakes, streams and creeks.

by deidram

The EPA has established a maximum contamination level of nitrates to be 10mg/L. That is not that high. And it is important that we only drink this much because we could get very sick and die!

What are point and non-point sources and how are they different?

Point and non-point sources of pollution are the following. A point source is oblivious pollution like a pipe gushing sudsy water into a river. A non-point source is like a point source you cannot point at or see.

Freshwater Pamphlet

by mitchellm

Water pollution is a big problem these days and this is a pamphlet all about it to answer all of your questions!

What is water pollution?

Water pollution is when waste products or other substances change the characteristics of a water source. It effects living species and reduces the waters benefits. Some consequences of water pollution are that bacteria produce and form a layer of slime on fish and plants. This results in decreased oxygen and increased disease.

It also lowers reproduction rates, so fish are less healthy and have increased stress. Some sources of water pollution are farmers, fishermen, transportation, industries, pleasure boaters and recreation.

What are nitrates and how does it affect me?

Nitrates are natural chemicals present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life, but too much can be a problem to plants and animals. Nitrates affect humans because it runs through the soil and into peoples’ wells and when people drink the water it can make them sick. The safe level of nitrates in drinking water 10mg/l. If you found nitrates in your water supply, you should provide alternative drinking water supplies. You can prevent nitrates from entering your water supply by reducing the amount of fertilizer being applied to the field, fence water courses and fence livestock.

What YOU can do to Prevent Water Pollution!

Some actions that can be taken to prevent water from becoming polluted by properly disposing of or recycling pollutants before they can contaminate water or air even more.

Fun Fact: Non point sources of water pollution are when you don’t know where the pollution is coming from. Point source pollution is when you do know where the pollution is coming from.

Q: Which do oil spills hurt more, animals or the ocean?

A: Oil spills mostly affect marine life rather than the ocean water itself.

Q: How is plastic harmful to the ocean?

A: As far as plastics in the ocean are concerned, they are inert substances. They pollute the world’s waterways in physical instead of chemical ways.

Freshwater Pollution Most people wonder what effect water pollution will have on us, the water life, and the land around the water. Well, all of these questions can be answered in this little pamphlet. What is Freshwater Pollution? Well there are 3 main sources of freshwater pollution, fishermen, farming, and garbage. Garbage is mostly like plastic and glass containing waste liquid. Also bait from fishermen and tangled line gets dumped into the water. When line is left in the water is creates pollution. Batteries and tin cans can also make freshwater pollution when met with physical heat. How Does Water Pollution Affect You? Water pollution can harm you in lots of ways like; it could get into your water and make you sick. It can also kill the plants around it and the animals that might be drinking from it. It can cause a layer of slime around fish and stop the oxygen from coming through the gills. Water pollution can also harm our air. It also makes your drinking water unsafe for everyone. What Are Nitrates And Are They Bad? Nitrates are a natural compound. Nitrates are bad to every thing that drinks water. It can get into your water and make you sick from the bacteria. If your water has more then level 10ppm of Nitrates it is dangerous to your health. Nitrates can give a baby that is 4 months or younger can give your baby blue baby syndrome. Nitrates help plants and animals to grow but the can cause a grown man to either have a really bad illness or even die. How Can we Prevent Water Pollution? We can all prevent water pollution by picking up our garbage like bait and tangled line from the waters like lakes. BY picking up plastic and cans, cardboards, and other things that lay on the side of the roads. Putting less fertilizer and gardens. Also not throwing fish guts into fishing waters. Trying not to spill chemicals into the waters.a dead black and white bird

Both filter and control polluted runoff, take up nutrients, and reduce soil erosion.

by brittanya
