We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. In my class we did an experiment to pretend we had a lunch and we had to figure out how many miles our lunch traveled to get to us. The first category is drink and I chose milk. The milk we chose came from Sequim and it traveled 26.2 miles to Port Hadlock. Next category was bread and we picked whole grain bread that came from Montana to Seattle which is 720 miles then from Seattle to Port Hadlock was 48 with a total of 768. Next category was protein and we chose hamburger and it came from Tenino to Shelton which took 35.5 miles then from Shelton to Port Hadlock it took 110 miles which in total is 145.5. Next was other filling and we chose red bell pepper and it was home grown. Next was fruit and veggies and we chose apple and from Yakima valley to Seattle it was 144 miles then from Seattle to Port Hadlock it was 48 miles which in total is 192. Last was snack and we chose potato chips which were from Grant County WA to Vancouver WA and that is 295 then Vancouver to Olympia is 105 Olympia to hadock was 97 miles which total was 497. The total miles was 1628.5 and the total for the whole meal which 6028 pounds of carbon it produced.

43267.5 pounds that is how much carbon dioxide is sent into the air when i get my lunch. It was a cheese burger whith jam and bread i also had a bannana, yogurt, and a glass of orange juice. The total miles to get that food was 11,538 miles. To get the pounds of carbon you multiply 3.67 by the total mileage. It is preaty horrible just for one lunch.

My lunch consisted of water, a sourdough sandwich with chicken and lettuce. Carrot sticks, and potato chips.
Our food traveled from a variety of places, it all traveled 2,098.1 miles to get to my plate. Thats 7762.97 pounds of CO2 that wasput into the atmosphere. Thats equivelent to an elephant!!!!

My lunch was a cheeseburger, with jam on bread followed by a banana, yogurt and a glass of orange juice. The total miles it took to get it here was 11,538. To convert that mileage into pounds of CO2 you have to multiply every mile by 3.67. The product of that is 43,267.5 pounds of carbon. That's the weight of 4.3 elephant!

For my lunch I had Hershey's chocolate, hamburger, apple, bread, and water. The amount of miles that it took for 1 lunch is 18,461.8 miles! That is so far away just for 1 bag of lunch! The total carbon that had been put into the atmosphere for my lunch is 68,308.66 pounds of carbon dioxide into the air!!! Thats as huge as 6 elephants all together=http://! That's crazy!!!

We made a lunch! Are lunch contained Fiji water, whole wheat bread, protein filling chicken,lettuce, and an apple. The reason we made a lunch was to see how far are food came from to us in chimicum. All of the driving miles from the produce came for
Was a total of over 42 THOUSEND air and road miles!! That's a ton of miles and money for a simple bottle of water and bread, apple, chicken, and lettuce.

I made a pretend lunch. My lunch had lays potato chips, Milk, Bell Peppers, Whole Wheat Bread, Hamburger Meat, and Apples. All of these came fro different places in the U.S, I'm organic so I picks things grown in Washington, it took 1,628 miles to get from different place in Washington to our grocery stor for my lunch. When we convert that to carbon dioxide, it was 6,028.6 ponds of co2!! One pound of co2 can fill a whole classroom. That's one pound. We converted our carbon dioxide to elephants, for those of you who can't picture 6,000 classrooms full of co2, we created .6 carbon elephants with our lunch. To get this, find out where your lunch came from, find the miles, multiply the miles by 3.7 to get the co2 and then divide the co2 by 10,000 to get how many carbon elephants your lunch cost you!! How many carbon elephants did you create?

My lunch was:
Drink: Fiji water ( actually from Fiji )
Bread: home made roll
Protein: chicken
2nd protein: lettuce
Fruit/ veggie: buleberrys
Snack: craisens
My whole lunch took a total of 8745.7 miles to get to my house, and put 32359.09 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere.

About the Blogger
I started my teaching career in South Central Los Angeles teaching in modified to full bilingual 4th and 5th grade classes. Then I moved to WA State where I have taught mainly 6th through 8th grade. I have enjoyed the culture clash but notice that kids are the same everywhere :o)
My areas of interest are science and technology but I also love studying ancient cultures and learning about different peoples and cultures.
