Our First Podcast!

I know, I know, it's been way too long since my last update.
The biggest news is that we've recorded a podcast! The easiest way to describe a podcast is to say it's like radio, except it's prerecorded and distributed over the internet. There's a lot more to it than just that, but let's move on anyway.
The students first listened to a podcast or two by a 3rd and 4th grade class called The Room 208 Podcast I said I thought we could do better, and many of the club members agreed.
It took a while, but the students wrote some scripts and even recorded them with very little help from me. (I was there if needed, but I'm glad to say they didn't need me.)
To record everything we used a rather old iMac and a free program called Audacity. Audacity can be a very powerful program but the controls were still simple enough for even me to understand them - and since it works on almost any computer it was really too good to pass up.
Once I felt we had enough recordings I spliced them all together and added some background music. The file's a little large, but I think it's still worth a listen.

January Update

It's been far too long since our last update, so let's do a bit of recapping.
A while back the 3rd and 4th grade Art Club kids wrote some collaborative stories and created some illustrations for them, which was a lot of fun.
It got even better when they created audio versions of their stories. I showed them how to use the recorder and gave them some ground rules (ex: don't use your full name!), and now I'm slowly editing the audio and the illustrations together into iPod compatible movies.
I've only completed one so far, and you can click on that picture to hear the story of Dr. Science.
5th and 6th grade Art Club kids are having fun as well, except they're the ones making movies. They wrote the scripts, and planned everything out, I'm just letting them borrow the cameras.
These projects are unfortunately not things that can be done by everyone at once, so we've been doing some other great projects at the same time. 3rd and 4th grade did some cool abstract paper sculpture, and 5th and 6th grade got to make some "star books" just before Winter Break.
Both groups spent two weeks learning how to play "1000 Blank White Cards," which by the way doesn't really require you to use a thousand cards. I modified the rules for the Art Club but the game is still a useful tool for building skills in art, math, and problem solving.
Last week the 5th and 6th graders got a special treat. Using a large plastic bin and a surplus of cardboard to prevent any mess, we made some monoprints. I'll have pictures of those uploaded eventually, but I think they turned out very nice.
Last but not least, I've been asked to submit some student art to the annual Youth Art Month Expo! These could be things done in or out of school, but they need to lay flat and look nice. I can handle all of the other requirements. If any student of mine wants to hand something in for possible selection they can slide it under my office door before Thursday. I know I won't be able to send in everything, but the students who do have something chosen will win a special prize from me. (I'm not going to say what the prize is yet, but last time I gave away sketchbooks and 35mm cameras.)

Hey, everyone! I sent Mr. Warlick our thankyou recording and he wrote back this morning! I should be getting ready to go out the door but I just had to share what he said with the rest of you:
-=-=-
[Mr. Smith],
Thanks so much for the note, and thank your students for me, for their audio greeting. What a wonderful holiday offering. Don't put those
pens and paints away. But just think about kids actually talking about their art through their blogs.
Art is so much more important today than ever before. When there is so much information out that that our messages have to compete for attention, the artist is certainly going to have an edge.
Later, bro!
-- dave --
Mr. Warlick's right, we're not putting our art supplies away. I have some great lessons planned for you, and this time you can brag, er, I mean, write about them as well!

Ok, not really sorry - the 3rd and 4th graders learned about BlogMeister as a group yesterday and they're excited that next week they'll get to work on their own web sites. They told me to thank Mr. Warlick for giving us BlogMeister for free, and instead I had them tell him themselves.
When we get back together I should have their collaborative stories online as well.
4th and 5th graders have missed a couple meetings because of some Dr's appointments I could not reshedule, but when we meet again they should be ready to start filming their movies!
This is getting very exciting.

Abstract Art

Another week, another Art Club. I missed out on having fun with my 5th & 6th graders due to there being no school on Thursday, but this week the 3rd & 4th graders got to make some abstract artworks. Again, many of them added these designs to their Altered Books. Those that didn't bring their books were still able to use construction paper, and there were good designs all over the place.
A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Sherman, who provided popcorn for the meeting.

1000 Blank White Cards

1000 Blank White Cards (also known as 1KBWC) is a fun game that helps you become more creative. All you need to have a good game are a couple of friends, some blank index cards that youve cut in half, and some pencils. You litterally make the cards while you're playing, but be careful, because other players could make cards to counterthe cards you've just made.
This game is especially amusing for people who like collectible card games like Yu-Gi-Oh! Pokemon, and so on, but it costs a LOT less money to play.
Sound interesting? Well, they have a copy of the rules over at Wikipedia. Check it out, and let me know if you enjoy this game as much as I do.
