Mr. Witte's Music Technology Blog

Music Tech Lab, Rm. 155

This class is for high school students at Winnebago Lutheran Academy who want to learn how to make music on computers. We use Audacity and Garageband as our main tools, and we have fun almost every single day figuring out how to make music using audio and MIDI, but we also learn how to record vocals and instruments and even play guitar and drums if we need to.

We keep personal blogs (look on the right column of this page and click on our names) to help us remember what we've been working on, keep track of the all the decisions that we've made on our projects, and to share with our family and friends the music that we've created.

through listening to podcasts like "talking metal" and "radio Bam" i learned that a podcast usually has a theme within the episode and has a few songs played throughout the episode that has to do with the theme discussed. sometimes there are guests on the show. some podcasts are reviews of certain products and are often times shorter in length then usual poddcasts.

Here are some notes i took while listening to a podcast about making podcasts.
parts of a podcast: based on what the creator's interests are. mirrors the most succesfull radio shows. always moving and broken into segments between six and eight minutes long. keep it fresh...
1:has a opening with an intro voice and music.
2:introduction to what the episode is about and who the hosts are. 3-5 minutes long.
3:has a bumper which acts like a break or a commercial sort of idea.
4:can go into post production in order to break down the episode.
5: sometimes has a lesson involved
6: reviews are involved or sometimes a guest interview with call ins
7: ends with a outro, voiceover and saying goodbye.
8: pictures may be a use.
9: chapters are helpful for if you want to skip through certain parts.
10: mostly AAC but sometimes an MP3 file may show up.
11: shows up on the web on your own website.

Chelli L -- What are the components of a podcast?

The components of a podcast are the voice of the person or persons. Also you have to be able to conduct interesting interviews. You should be able to use music skillfully and have some sound effects. Using music can grab the listeners attention and establish a mood for your podcast.

We watched a video in class about podcasting and this is what I learnt.

Parts of a Podcast

• 1. See what makes radio shows popular.
• 2. Different segments between 7 and 8 minutes long.
• 3. Musical bits in-between each segments.
• 4. Musical intros.
• 5. Intro introduce the speakers - 3-5 minutes long.
• 6. A bumper to help move from one segment to the other.
• 7. Able to cut things down if you think it's too long.
• 8. You could have a guest interview.
• 9. Show ends with you saying bye and with an outtro.
• 10. You can show pictures about what you are talking about.

I was watching podcast episodes from the Military channel show "Future Weapons." The main parts of the episode were the video itself, and dramatic music in the background matching the action happening in the video.

We watched a video in class today about the components of a podcast. Here are my notes.Parts of a podcast

John Danty.
how do you produce a podcast that people want to listen to?
people who broadcast don't really have broadcasting experience
Paul Garay's a home recorder. how did he learn to make a successful show? he modeled after good radio shows
typical podcast: broken down into segments. 6-8 min. musical bumpers/stingers to keep it "fresh"
he used another person's voice to do the intro. it gives the show an identity. talks about current events. then outro with another musical bumper. (transition) they use guest interviews. brings up topic they've talked about. they end the show off with that.
podcast ends with outro with other person's voiceover.
extras
have separated chapters to skip through sections. they can put pictures in that relate to the topic. you can add a link to the picture to get more info. easiest way to make a website --> iWeb
prepared text in text edit.

Zachary S -- What are the Components of a Podcast?

A podcast can be made up of several different things. Music is defiantly one of them. It plays a part in the opening and ending as well as between commercials. Topic segments and different speakers often provide a change in pace and a little color to the show.

--

Commercials and sponsor messages are also part of a podcast. Because they are free, they need a way to gain capital, advertising during podcasts is a way to do just that.

Several different segments with musical interlude are often a part of a podcast. Often they are modeled after radio shows and television shows.

Introductions "intros" and ending segments "outros" Bumpers and stingers are used to provided separation between different topic segments. Voice-overs are also a way to provide segment bumpers.

Segments range around a target length of 6 to 8 minutes. Some commonly used segments are a news segments, mailbag, contests, guest speakers, feature stories, editorials, current events, and a "lighter-side" topic with some humor.

Nicholas S -- Components of a Podcast

There can be the audio which is in every podcast and there is video in some podcasts. In the actual podcast you can incorporate music by having back ground music or having music at the beginning or at the end. Then the rest of the podcast consists of the information or entertainment you want to put in.

These are my notes from a video on podcasting.
Parts of a Podcast
You should try to mirror the most successful radio shows. what makes them interesting? It should be tight and always moving. Broken down to segment between 6-8 min. long. Music in between sections called bumpers. Use a 3rd party voiceover. Have a voice of the show(3rd party voice) for the intro, end, and bumpers. 3-5 min long intro. Talk about things going on. Talk about topics you're going to talk about. Bumper helps you switch from 1 section to the other. Nice thing about podcasts is the ability to go into post production and shorten things up. Use a guest in the show because it gives the show a different sound than just the regular hosts. With enhanced podcasts you can add in artwork or pictures which can help show products or make the show into like chapters and you can skip around the podcast by chapter. You can add links also. Have a website for your podcast because it gives listeners a place to go to see you and find out about your show.
