Mr. Witte's Music Technology Blog

Music Tech Lab, Rm. 155

This class is for high school students at Winnebago Lutheran Academy who want to learn how to make music on computers. We use Audacity and Garageband as our main tools, and we have fun almost every single day figuring out how to make music using audio and MIDI, but we also learn how to record vocals and instruments and even play guitar and drums if we need to.

We keep personal blogs (look on the right column of this page and click on our names) to help us remember what we've been working on, keep track of the all the decisions that we've made on our projects, and to share with our family and friends the music that we've created.

Dale W -- Summer Music Camps

Article posted January 19, 2009 at 01:12 PM GMT-6 • comment • Reads 4815

I was really excited to see a whole article in the Feb 2009 In Tune magazine devoted to the topic of summer music camps because I remembered how well they wrote an article in the Oct 2008 issue about their picks for Best Music Schools 2008.

But as I read the article, my excitement turned cold.

I was hoping to learn about summer music camps in the upper midwest, close to where I live and teach.  I was hoping to learn about summer music camps which helped my choir and music tech have an outlet to go and grow in their love of music.  But what I read about was quite different than what I expected.

"Summer Music" (pp. 30-36) was divided into Jazz, Orchestra, Piano, Rock & Pop, Voice, Music & the Arts, and Marching Band camps.  So, naturally I headed to the section that I teach the most, Voice.  Here are the summer music camps In Tune magazine listed (p. 34):

The first three are either in Ohio or Michigan.  The last two aren't even identified where they are.  You's have to go to their websites for more information.  You mean there aren't any summer music camps in Wisconsin for choir students?

Not true, I know that that.  But this article left me a little disappointed.  I was hoping to get some great ideas about where to send my students this summer, but, as is with all things in life, you get out of something what you put into it.  I now know that I need to read up on the five vocal camps listed above, Google "summer music camp wisconsin", and look for the expanded camp directory that the "Music Camp Survival Guide" lists on p. 36 at the end of the article.  Maybe my excitement will get warmer then.

The article I chose to read is the "We The Kings" article. What originally caught my eye was that I was familiar with the band in the article. I found the article very interesting becuase it talked about how the band uses hooks and the methods they use to write their songs. The article also talks about the up-and-coming band the Tokyo Police Club. I found these aspects fascinating, especially since when I hear their music playing, I can relate what I read in InTune to what I'm listening too. Overall I found the write up very interesting.

You can listen to 30 second music clips of We the Kings and Tokyo Police Club on the iTunes Music Store.

I chose to read this article because I like the movie "The Pink Panther". Mancini also wrote songs for "The Glenn Miller Story", "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Romeo and Juliet", and for the detective series for "Peter Gunn". Mancini was nominated for 72 Grammies and won 20 of them. He also won 4 Oscars and 2 Emmys.

You can listen to 30 seconds of the Pink Panthers theme song on itunes.

Matt N -- SENNHEISER MIC

In INTUNE their is an ad for Sennheiser wireless microphones. I picked this ad to write about because in the ad RJA chose to use this mic with his singing. I thought that that was cool because i use the same Sennheiser Wireless Mics' as RJA for My Entertainment Company. I feel that it is cool to use the same Equipment as a singer uses in live concerts for my company because it tells people that they are getting a quality company that knows what they are doing . The band We the kings also use Sennheiser. That is

why i thought this ad was really cool!

I read about Mikes vibraphone on page 58 in the magazine. I thought that he must be a brilliant man he can play the vibraphone not only but he invented a pick up system so the sound of the instrument could be heard over the guitars and drums. If my mr.witte wasnt already my idol he would probably be next in line. just kiding, sorry.

Elizabeth W -- Old Sounds From a New Band

Article posted January 14, 2009 at 01:40 PM GMT-6 • comment (2) • Reads 256

ladyantebellum.musiccitynetworks.com/ They are a country music band that blends together old influences from years ago. instead of writing a song on a certain type like country or hip-hop they just write songs on what comes to their mind. I like this article because they aren't like all the new bands and have to write about something new they write things from years back and parents would probally really like their kids listening to this. Its on p.10 You an also hear them on the itunes store

Jamstudio.com

is a website that lets you create music how you want to. You can have up to eight different tracks on the card. This sounds interesting to me because you can make a music mix of different songs and then burn it on a cd. For example, I could use 8 different tracks from the band Lady Gaga.  I love music, and putting different songs together on a song is even better. Pg. 10

While reading this magazine I came across an article that was about Lady Antebellum. In this article it says that they blend old influences like classic country and western and someothers. I think it is cool that there is something on them becasue last year I went to see a Phil Vassar concert and they opened from him and we had no idea who they were. At first I really didnt like their music but now that they are on the radio and I have listened to them they sound really good and their music is awesome. They never said what they intended to write they just wrote what came to them, I think that is so great. Article found on page 10 on the bottom.

You can listen to Lady Antebellum at the iTune link. Also you can listen to Phil Vassar.

The part of the InTune magazine, February 2009 Volume 6 Issue 5, that I found quiet interesting was the section where it taught you more to understand arpeggios. It took you through steps beginning with the basics and ending with more difficult chords. It is able to teach you how to break up, suspend, alter and cluster chords. Under each of the illustrations it would than further describe the chord or the name that it is called. Now if I were someone who could even in the slightest bit be able to learn how to write music I would find this section very helpful.

You can listen to some music by Jazz Pianist McCoy Tyner for ideas on arpeggios.

The name of the band caught my eye. Lady Antebellum is a country group that is new on Nashville Road. It was found in the Feb.09 vol. 6 pg.10of InTune magazine. The interesting part about this article was how it described how they blend together old influences like rock and classic country. They are a really cool band. I actually got to see them perform at a concert. They opened for Phil Vassar. I had no idea who they were but their music was fun and different. Their most popular songs are "Looking for a Good Time" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore".

The article Rhyme and Reason (Volume 6, Issue 5) really caught my eye, showing the work done behind the scenes of the daunting task of writing lyrics. It really caught my eye, because I don't think most people realize how much work is really put into lyrical writing, searching for just that right word, or a specific emotion to be portrayed. Something I thought was interesting was when Paul McCartney, wrote the classic "Yesterday" he wrote the music and sang the words "scrambled eggs" to his melody until he had found the words he was looking for.

Later in the article they talked about "Rymin'" Paul Simon, whose titled is well deserved, who used rhyming in his songs, like no other to produce some of the most unique lyrics. He even put out an album to that feat called There Goes Rhymin' Simon.

Benjamin K -- Listening to the Lyrics

Article posted January 20, 2009 at 09:36 AM GMT-6 • comment (4) • Reads 354

The reason that I chose the article Rhyme and Reason from Intune in the Feb 09, vol 6, #5 was because I have tried to write songs before without much luck, so I was hoping for some tips. What I found interesting was that before Paul McCartney, from the Beatles, wrote the lyrics for Yesterday he sang scrambled eggs to he melody. I also found out that I didn't really know what Taylor Swift  was really singing in the song Love Story. So here are the lyrics. I learned that having a theme for the song helps a lot.
