This class is for high school students at Winnebago Lutheran Academy who want to learn how to make music on computers. We use Audacity and Garageband as our main tools, and we have fun almost every single day figuring out how to make music using audio and MIDI, but we also learn how to record vocals and instruments and even play guitar and drums if we need to.
We keep personal blogs (look on the right column of this page and click on our names) to help us remember what we've been working on, keep track of the all the decisions that we've made on our projects, and to share with our family and friends the music that we've created.

Over the past two days, you've gotten used to listening for eight-counts, counting them out loud, and splitting them out of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. Now, I challenge you to split the following examples out of "Don't Stop Believin'":
Two separate splits that meet the following counts:

Using 8 beats, how can you tell when it's at one? I dont know much about music but I'm guessing it's when there's a big note, and then there are seven more beats and then another big note which is the next one.

Being on the dance team, its really easy for me to count in 8's. It's really natural for me to just start counting 8's. But now I have to think, how do I know when to start? I think it's a beat that goes one and then seven beats follow, then another bigger beat with 7 following. It's just something I feel with the beats.

MrW asked us all the post about how we would describe "how we know when to start counting"
In an 8-count, the down-beats are on the even numbers, and the up-beats are on the odd numbers (so it starts with a 'up' and ends with a 'down').
The count begins with the strongest beat and ends with the 'leading' beat.

you know where the 8 beats are, cause for example the paino has a 16 counts of repeated material during the verse, just cut that in 2 and feel the groove

if im recalling right midi stands for musical insturment digital interface. were just learning how to use it with our keyboards which we have also began to start using. also im interested in how a musical note has velocity, since weve started learning about velocity now in physics, rock on

Today in Music Tech, I worked with MIDI. MIDI allows you to make music on Garageband with different instruments. The notes are put in with your keyboard and then can be edited on the screen. Today, I recorded "Mary had a Little Lamb" onto Garageband.

When I listen to a song, I always try to find the 8 counts. When looking for the first beat, I listen for some of the bass beat and see when the music starts. The 1st beat is lil stronger sometimes. You know it is one when it feels ackward to count the numbers. You just have to have a fell for the music and then find the first beat. I don't know how to describe it.

When you listen to the music you might be able to know where the first beat starts. I think that you can just feel when it is the first beat and the first beat is kind of harder or louder than the others. Some people might have difficulties or think that the first beat is like the 2nd beat of the song. It all depends on your ears and your ability to listen and read music.

We have recently been introduced to midi and garageband. They are really cool to learn things in and they way you can do changes are amazing. We have been placing new notes in a recording and also lengthening a note. We have also learned to play with a metronome which is kind of hard until you listen to it for a while. We are also going to be starting to do a hymn in class that we will be using different instruments on. I can't wait for you to hear it.

AHHHHH Mr. Witte has just asked us the most terrible question. He has just asked us to describe for him where one is in an eight count beat and as one of the people said it was like trying to describe the color red but I will try and do my best. The way that I think of finding one in eight is to listen for a while and find the strongest beat I would also count to it and get a feel for the music. That's the best I can do

WOW! This class is da bomb wanna know why? Because we get to use these awesome programs such as MIDI and Garageband!!! These programs are great because they both deal with music and music cutting. We also are going to be starting on a new hymn project which allows us to play with different hymns in different ummm uhhh instruments. We have been recently playing with MIDI and are learning some new things such as placing in a new note in our recorded stuff along with lengthening a note and playing to a metronome. Cya

When I listen to the music, A strong beaet coming up or a new sentence of the verse so I start with the first count. It is extremely hard to explain how I know when to start counting though.. I really have no other way to tell you.. It's too confusing!

Dale Witte is the choir director and music technology teacher at Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Fond du Lac, WI. He has been teaching since January 1990 and really enjoys teaching students how God's gift of music works. Dale is also a church organist, piano player, violinist, and church music composer.
