Technology Can Take You There

Cool Computer Kids will be learning with technology after school a few days a week. We use pen names or our initials for our protection. Our real names are a secret, because we are using our NetSmartz. [The archived Lit Studies class consisted of fourth and fifth graders. They were learning and discovering new ideas while exploring literature. This class ended Dec. 2006. Students may continue to comment and post articles, although they may have moved on to another school.]

All the 3rd to 5th grade classes at PT Coe Elementary School have been working hard at creating Microsoft Excel Charts. We are in the process of uploading them to Flickr.com, to obtain the HTML code required to place them in our blog pages. See below for the Excel charts which have been created and uploaded to Flickr.com thus far. You can find the links to their blog pages by clicking the PT Coe Links Page on the left under the Related Links.

Lego Avatar

How do you like my new Lego Avatar? You may create one by going to reasonablyclever.com/mini/kidsafe.htm.
They are fun and easy to create. The tricky part is saving your creation to your computer, editing it, uploading it to Flickr.com to resize it, and then adding it to your blog page. WOW! Take a look at the Flickr.com badge below for avatars already created for Coe blog pages. Don't you think it was worth it? Try it out if you have time. Mrs. Scott

What I Did For Halloween

Article posted November 6, 2007 at 11:58 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 163

I had fun talking to my neighbors again this year and passing out candy to trick-or-treaters. I saw some big kids walking in the middle of the street and I yelled for them to get out of the way of this truck. I thought they were going to get run over in the dark. Then I noticed that they were carrying cartons of eggs. Can you believe that they let me take their picture? I had fun passing out candy for Halloween and seeing everyone in their costumes. What did you do?

My Fall Break

Article posted October 25, 2007 at 03:28 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 139

I had a wonderful Fall intersession. I have shared some of my experiences with students, friends and family in person, and they wanted to hear more. Let's see if it is just as interesting in writing. Here's a little background information before I begin my story.

As some of you know, my husband and I shared a very spooky night on the Queen Mary last October. I didn't think I would return to the ship harbored at Long Beach, California and spend another night there. But we did! We even spent a couple nights this time.

porthole

This is the view of Long Beach through our cabin porthole.

pelican

I made the mistake of throwing extra toast out the porthole. The birds tried to fly in! I wouldn't suggest feeding the birds. It was scary seeing them eye to eye and up so close. Just like in the "Finding Nemo" movie, they will go through the window!

The Queen Mary has a lot of history. It transported troops during World War II. At that time it was called the Grey Ghost. My husband and I toured the entire ship and we also explored a Russian submarine called the Scorpian, which was anchored nearby.

The Pacific Aquarium across the harbor was fabulous too. I loved seeing all the fish in the movie, Finding Nemo. My husband was much braver than I was when it came to petting the sharks. I was happier to take pictures instead…lots of pictures and short videos.

Dory and Friend

We visited the Long Beach and Seal Beach this year. Long Beach is great for kite flying. You need to be very strong to fly a kite here. You need to use both arms and be careful not to become airborne! It was very windy and the surfers used parachutes. On the pier, we watched a man try to catch two fish with one rod! It was amazing. He caught one fish about a foot long, and then this huge fish was trying to go after that fish! The three-foot fish got away. I wish I had a video of it, because no one believes it except for those that saw it with their own eyes!

Now, let me tell you another unbelievable story. Remember I told you that my husband and I stayed at the Queen Mary Hotel? Well, I truly think that people, who died on the ship in the past, haunt the ship today. We went on the Ghost and Legend tour, which is mixed with truth and fantasy. During part of the tour, we visited the former swimming pool that was used years ago by passengers. No one swims in it today. Scientists say there is a place in the changing area that is a portal “to the other side.” The tour guide took us down the stairs, past the huge pool, and into the pitch-black changing area. The only light was HIS flashlight. It was so dark. I couldn’t see anything without it…not even my own hand in front of my own face! Remember how I told you that my husband was brave? Well, I never let go of his hand as he led me down this long hallway to the other end of the changing stalls. The doors had been removed. I found out later that we weren’t supposed to go into this area while on the tour! The tour guide told us to walk down there to see if we could find the portal. I was so frightened! I wanted to go back but the guide wasn’t flashing the light in our direction. I told my husband that I couldn’t see anything and I wanted to go back. Then I heard a women’s voice say, “Go on, go on ahead.” I put my hand out to feel around but there wasn’t anyone there behind me. As I walked along the hallway, something was touching me on top of my head! I wanted to scream but I didn’t. I put my hand up to see what it was and it felt like a rubber hand! Then it was gone. A heard a different voice and it was from a different tour guide. He came down to see why there were voices coming from that area. (Tours weren’t supposed to go in that area, remember?) I asked if the ghosts were friendly, and he said that Sara is mean, but that Jackie was nice. The other tour guide finally used his flashlight so I could get out of there! I truly didn’t want to see any ghost. I think I just heard and felt one! I don’t know if I’ll ever have the nerve to go back there again. Would you?

Now I’d love to hear what you did during Fall Break.

It's Almost March!

Article posted February 27, 2007 at 12:38 AM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 95

Wow! Can you believe that it's almost March? We have our Spring break coming up between March 12-16. Yes, it's only a week at this time. We will then be off from April 30 to May 4. Is anyone already looking forward to our last day of school which is June 14?

Anyone interested in how many more Cool Computer Kids days we have left? What is your prediction? Is it more or less than 35? Well, whatever the number is, I feel like it's not enough. I want you all to be able to blog even if I'm not around. I believe having blogging skills will help all of you in your futures, whether you may realize it or not.

What's great about blogging is that you can do it from ANY computer that has an Internet connection. I realize that not everyone has a computer at home, but you can always borrow one at the local library, when you're not able to use one in the tech lab. Ask your family and friends if you could use theirs. You may even volunteer to teach them how to comment. It can be fun for everyone, even if everyone doesn't have their own blog page.

I don't know about you, but I'm not ready for March to be here. At the beginning of the year, the end seems so far away. March is the countdown to the actual ending of the year. Is it the same for you?

Flipped Book Club

Article posted February 2, 2007 at 02:21 AM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 129

Hello book club members!

Our Lit Studies group is no longer meeting on a daily basis, but we can still read and talk about literature. Remember how we talked about our other stories using blogging? Let's continue to use this space to talk about our new book, "Flipped." See me if you would like to join us, but haven't received a book yet.

Please answer the following questions first.

What page or chapter are you on? We don't want to give out any information that will spoil the book for others.

What do you think the upside-down chick on the front cover has to do with the story?

Have you figured out why the story is called "Flipped?" Please explain.

Who would you rather be friends with? Why?

Have you made any connections with the story so far? (Answering this question is optional, which means only answer it if you want to, you are not required to answer this question.)

Do you like the story so far? Are you curious what is going to happen next? Would you call it a page-turner? (You don't want to put the book down.)

Please remember to answer the question using parts of the question. If you just answer "yes" or "no," we will not know what question you are answering.

I have to say that I'm looking forward to your responses. I hope you all enjoy the story as much as I did.

Changes With the New Year

Article posted January 11, 2007 at 03:01 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 167

Happy New Year everyone!

Even though I know we are all starting the new year off with mixed emotions, we can still find the positive side of every change. I feel that our literature studies class has been a fantastic exerience for all us this year. I'm saddened that it had to end in the middle of the school year.

For all the world-wide friends you have made through blogging, I'm hoping that you will be able to continue conversing. This blog page will remain open, and our Cool Computer Kids will continue to blog to the end of the school year.

I am very happy to say that our first through fifth grade classes at our school have begun blogging as well. Many classes have already been set up. If you look in the links section of coelab.zoomshare.com, you will see the classes sorted by grade level. Please be patient as we get articles published.

Our students are new to blogging and are learning how to publish articles. Many students are beginning with brief articles about their favorites. They will also be learning how to comment to others and to leave their URL. Although the classes are set up, students have yet to publish work.

Thanks for visiting and keep blogging!

The Tale of Despereaux

Article posted December 11, 2006 at 03:13 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 115

We have been reading the book, "The Tale of Despereaux." We should be done in about a week. Before then, I would like you to answer the following questions.

Imagine you have broken a rule and have been banished from your community. What would you miss most? If it meant you could return to the community, would you say you were sorry, even if you felt you had done nothing wrong?

Describe the relationship between Miggery Sow and the Princess Pea. What do they have in common? What are their differences?

Do you want to finish the story? Why? What do you predict will happen?
