The Things They Carried Mission 8

Article posted May 19, 2013 at 07:50 PM GMT-6 • comment • Reads 803

This mission must be completed and placed in your memory book and ready to be read to your classmates during exam week.

Write a creative nonfiction piece about a memory you "carry."

Here are some things to consider to get your ideas flowing:

1. Who is/was the single-most important person in your life?

2. Think about specific memories of that someone. Examples: walking through the garden, sitting at the kitchen table, getting a gift at Christmas, dancing to a favorite song, etc.

3. How would you describe this person? Examples: short, dark man, gentle nature, sly, easy smile

4. What places do you associate with this person? Examples: garden, hospital, greenhouse, kitchen table, wedding hall

5. Do you associate any particular objects with this person? Examples: wood, pipe, tomatoes, eyeglasses, coffee milk, laughter

6. What feelings do you have when you think about this person? Examples: loneliness, gratitude, hurt, love

Pick the richest incident from these ideas to develop into a story.

Include this in your final memory book. Remember this is the story you will read aloud to your classmates during exam week, and it will count for part of your final nine weeks grade.
