How did you like tree planting? It was fun but cold

How many trees did you plant? 13 trees

What did you plant? Trees

Where did we plant? Chimacum Beach

Why did we plant trees? Trees help the water and salmon so we planted trees to help them

Water Pollution!

Article posted March 14, 2013 at 08:26 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 129

Water Pollution is a serious thing pretty soon everywhere will be polluted if we don't do something about it. So, stay in tuned and first I'll tell you how to prevent. Then, the dangers. Next, causes. Then, types. And finally treating.

How could I prevent water pullution? So you can prevent water pollution by conserving water by turning off the tap when you are not using it, be careful about what you throw down you sink or toilet, use environmentally household products, don't overuse pesticides and fertilizers, more plants in your garden, don't litter in rivers, lakes, or oceans, just don't litter at all.

What are the dangers of water pollution? Well this is how water pollution can affect the health of marine life and us: metals and toxic compounds that damage the health of aquatic life and anything that eats it. Microbial pollutants from sewage usually give things infectious disease that infect marine life and terrestrial life through drinking water. Also organic matter and nutrients causes an increase in aerobic algae and depletes oxygen from the water. Sulfate particles from acid rain can cause harm to the marine life in the rivers and lakes. Suspended particles in fresh water reduces the quality of drinking water for humans and aquatic environment for marine life so it affects us too.

Dangers for the economy: Well water pollution can be damaging to the economy as it can be expensive to treat and prevent contamination. Waste that does not break down quickly accumulates in the Earth's waters and eventually makes it way to the oceans. Water pollutants can be prevented by stopping pollutants from contaminatiing nearby treatments to prevent pollution such as :
•Biological filters
•Chemical additives
•Sand filters
These simple techniques cost money to maintain, but preventing is much cheaper than cleaning up water pollution. Clean-up depends on many factors:
•The location
•The contamination size
•The type of pollution
So you might want think about the money too.

Danger of the environment: There are many different types of water pollution and have different adverse effect on the environment.
•Heavy metals
•Industrial waste
•Microbial pollutants
•Organic matter and nutrients
•Sulfate particles
•Suspend particles

Now the causes. So some of the causes are sewage and waste water, marine dumping, industrial waste, radioactive waste, oil pollution, underground storage leakages, atmospheric deposition, global warming, and eutrophication. Now I am going to tell you a little about every cause. If you dump stuff in the ocean (marine dumping) These are how long stuff takes to degrade in the water.
•Cardboard- 2 weeks
•Newspaper- 6 weeks
•Foam- 50 years
•Styrofoam- 80 years
•Aluminium- 200 years
•Plastic packaging- 400 years
•Glass- It takes so long that we don't know the exact time
Also most pollution is very dirty because of sewage and waste water, oil pollution, radioactive waste, underground storage leakages, eutrophication, and atmospheric deposition, and then global warming heats up waters and marine life dies from the heat.

Next is the types. The types of water pollutions: Surface Water Pollution, Oxygen Depleting, Groundwater, Nutrients, Microbiological, Suspended Matter, and Chemical.

Finally, Treating. Here are some treatments: Industrial Treatment, Denitrification, Septic Tanks, Ozone Wastewater Treatment. Now I'll tell you something about each of them. Industrial Treatment: Before raw sewage can be safely released back into the environment it needs to be treated correctly in a water treatment plant. In a water treatment plant sewage goes through a number of chambers and chemical processes to reduce the amount and toxicity of the waste. Which could become very expensive. Denitrification: Denitrification is an ecological approach that can be used to prevent the leaching of nitrates in soil this in turn stops any ground water from being contaminated with nutrients. Septic Tanks: Septic tanks treat sewage at the place where it is located rather than transporting the waste through a treatment plant or sewage system. Septic tanks are usually used to treat sewage from a individual building. Ozone Wastewater Treatment: Ozone wastewater treatment is a method that is increasing in popularity. A ozone generator is used to break down pollutants in the water source.
So now you know all of this about water pollution and maybe you will think twice before you do anything that could cause it because it just doesn't affect marine life it affects you too.

EMM lesson 13

1. Each time it got closer to the center the effort distance, effort force, and work got bigger.

2. Simple machInes make a life easier because they make thing less work

3. We couldn't get the sled to lift when we used the motor and the lever

EMM Lesson 10

Article posted January 18, 2013 at 08:25 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 373

1. The light bulb flashed on and off when the wahsers fell.
2. I think if you put a different number of washers on if its less I dont think the light will turn on and if its more I think it will maybe stay on longer and be brighter.
3. with 4 washers nothing happend abd with 5 it flashed on and off with 6 it flashed on longer than 5 washers with 7 it was brighter.
4. Conclusion: The more washers the more powerful the light bulb can be.
5. The energy to the light bulb comes from gravity because they are going so fast that it creates kinetic energy.
6. 4 washers: distance is 1 meter and 30 cm the weight is 1.20 N the work done by gravity is 1.56. 5 washers: distance is 1 meter and 30 cm the wieght is 1.45 N the work done by gravity is 1.885. 6 washers: distance is 1 meter and 30 cm the weight is 1.5 N the work done by gravity is 1.95 7 washers: distance is 1 meter and 30 cm the wieght is 1.80 the work done by gravity is 2.34
7. Observations: Gravity could be like a battery because gravity made the washers fall and that made the light bulb turn on.
8. Things that I could change in this experiment: More washers and longer string .
9. Procedure: 1. Put the board together 2. Wind up the string and let go with 4 washers and rerord the time and what happend 3. Repete 2 but keep adding a washer Intell you get to 7 washers 4. Weigh 4 washers and then 5 and so on and mersure the string 5. Then find out the work but gravity did but timing the distance by the weight and now find out the power by dividing the work done by the time.
10. Yes because it made the light bulb turn on so why wouldnt it charge a battery.

EMM Lesson 9

1. A watt is a way to calculate power. You calculate watts by timing the time times work.
2. If you have a 100-W light bulb you get 100-W of power.
3. 750 watts equal 1 horsepower
4. yes because the more batteries it has the stronger the motor will be then it will take less time.
5. When we added more batteries the less time it took to get up so the time changed when we added more batteries.
6.the power graph goes up and the time graph goes down.
7. You can use more batteries to make the motor lift more.
8. No because the motor doesnt hold a lot of things so I don't think it does.

For Chistmas Eve I go to my aunts house for dinner and I do that on Christmas Day too. And on new years eve I either go to my friends house or have a friend come over and we set off fireworks. So this is what I do for winter break.

Work and science work are the same because you have to do work and they are diffrent because if you push a wall and it didnt move in everyday work you did work but because you didn't move it in science work you didn't do anything.

I mesured number of batteries and I battery lifted zero washers to the top and 2 lifted 1 and 3 lifted 2. Also we learned you should have 3 batteries and 4 wires and the batteries should be in series also you should have a short string.
