Surviving the Seventh Grade

Article posted May 22, 2013 at 05:53 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 37

Seventh grade seemed to fly by, yet it was also one of the longest years of my life!!! I think that I did well this year academically, I got good grades in all my classes and was able to keep up with all of my work. What didn't go quite so well is that I usually waited to do my homework until the night before it was due, normally forcing me to stay up REALLY late on most nights to try to finish. If you know me well enough you know that I LOVE my sleep, so staying up late tired me out pretty quickly. The other thing that didn't go well this year was all of the drama! This year I have learned who my real friends are, how to surround myself with people who make me feel good, and how to have a steel-spine. On the academic side, I've learned about writing techniques, how to factor and use the quadratic formula (and a lot of other math things!), the systems of the body and their functions, new things about different cultures, and many French words I didn't know before. The most important thing I learned was how to work in a group (we had to work in a group in some capacity in each class). I wish we would've had more time on projects, but having limited time definitely taught me to not procrastinate! Next year, I hope to do my homework the day it's assigned and start projects right away.
For the incoming 7th graders, I recommend staying on top of all your work. If things get piled up, it gets difficult to finish and accomplish everything. Also, don't get behind on blogs, try to do them when they are assigned so you don't forget to do them! You might also want to join a club or team, they can be lots of fun and give you opportunities to meet new and amazing people. Last, when people show you who they are, believe them, and don't get wound up in all the drama, trust me when I say it isn't any fun. If you ever want more advice, come find one of us 8th graders, we know a lot about how to survive 7th grade!!!

World History!

Article posted May 17, 2013 at 05:19 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 19

The World History Fair was definitely a learning experience!!! I learned that world history has affected much of the world today, by influencing culture, beliefs, and values. Our past can also help us to not make the same mistakes in the future. My topic for the World History Fair was the Trojan War, and my guiding question was "How did certain moments of the war affect the outcome?" I found out that the war was changed depending on how the Greek gods got involved, what warriors fought, and battle strategies. The most interesting part for me was getting to learn about the details of the war, since I really enjoy Greek mythology.
I think that getting to visit other proejcts was also an enjoyable part of the World History Fair.I liked how each person had a good understanding of their topic! I learned lots of things ranging from the Renaissance to mythology to ancient Egypt! You really learned a lot from just looking at people's 3D project too. For example, you learned how torture weapons were used by looking at Mica's models, or you could see the difference between how the poor and the rich used to dress in Egypt by looking at Lauren's project.
Overall this was a good experience and I learned a lot!!!

Education is Important!!!

Article posted May 8, 2013 at 05:51 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 82

I think that Mandella was very inspirational and this quote was motivational in many ways. My personal thought about the quote is that he is correct. I think he means that you can't solve any issue in the world without being knowledgable about it, or else you won't have any idea how to fix it. For example, you would have no clue how to help save the environment without first knowing its condition and what is causing it to be decreasing. I sent my postcard to our principle about bullying, since many people that I know of still have concerns about it (and I was having a difficult time thinking of an idea!), and wrote about how we still need to be educated about the topic. If we don't know as much about bullying and it's effects, most people will never stop. This quote can be used in other life situations as well, because no matter what, you always need knowledge to solve a problem.

Costa Rica es Número UNO

I thought that International Towne was very fun! I think that it is an entertaining way to teach our generation about international trade and different cultures from around the world. I learned that all the countries depend on each other to trade with, and without getting imports and giving exports we would not have as much variety in the items we have and use today. The only thing that I would change is to have a longer break! Since we are being graded on completing four cultural activities (one from each region) and visiting each country to say the greeting and thank you in their language, I spent all of my break time on completing those tasks! Because this was so time consuming, I only got to buy one thing because it was from my own country and I didn't have to travel anywhere to get it. My favorite part of the trip was either getting to work with the people in my group, or the amazing hair accessories. Our group was really nice and definitely worked well together, stayed on task, and did a great job in general! Also, each country had to wear cultural hats, my country's hat happened to be a large straw-like hat. Since it was so big, sometimes you would accidentally hit each other with them, and it was hard to maneuver with at times. Since I was a president, I had to serve a session of tribunal, where we had to wear fancy wigs as well. It was very long and covered in white curly hair! I definitely made a fashion statement wearing the wig and my country hat at the same time. Overall, this experience was really good and I would love to come back to International Towne another time.

(P.S. Costa Rica rocks!!!)

Chicken Wings, But No Hot Sauce This Time!!

Article posted April 15, 2013 at 02:47 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 82

I personally thought that our chicken wing dissection in science was extremely fun!!! I thought that it was really interesting to get hands on the muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons that resemble the human body. I also would like to possibly become a doctor as my future career, so this lab was definitely a good practice to have in order to move on to more intense dissections. I think that it was absolutely worth-while because you got to actually look at how each part was connected to the other and functioned together as a whole. For my chicken wing, we pinched the biceps and triceps and the wing bended up and down. I learned how all of the parts have specific functions that help the wing move together, and generally how the muscular and skeletal systems work. When my brother did the same dissection two years ago, one of his friends fainted when they saw the blood of the chicken. His eyes rolled back in his head and he had to be carried out by Mr. Sterk. I'm just glad that the same thing didn't happen to me! I'm looking forward to the next dissection as well, bring on the frog=http://

World History Fair!!!

Article posted April 8, 2013 at 02:55 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 25

I think that the World History Fair has gone well, although it has definitely taken a lot of work and will require a lot more. My topic is the Trojan War and my guiding question is "How did certain moments of the war affect the outcome?" There are a few challenging steps to this project as well, and we have already completed two of them. So far we have had to complete a research packet having to do with our guiding question and other research questions and also had to complete a bibliography citing our sources from the research. We are currently working on our essay explaining our research question. I personally think that the way we are organizing our research to write the essay is ,more simple then trying to write it without that piece. We cut out our notes and organized them into "like" groups, already organizing the facts into paragraphs. So far this project has been mostly easy, however what I believe might be the hardest parts are going to be assigned soon. I think it will take a long time to make the tri board and 3D project, making it a hard task that requires good time management. I'm not positive about what I'm going to do for the 3D project except I am thinking about possibly making the Trojan Horse out of clay, popsicle sticks, or some sort of other material. I am actually excited for this part although it is very time consuming so I am not going to procrastinate!!! Overall I enjoy this project and I plan on working hard the next few weeks to make my project very good!

Ernest Green and the Little Rock Nine

Article posted March 17, 2013 at 11:46 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 124

This movies as a great movie but it made me feel mad and embarrassed about how our country behaved decades ago. I don't get why people had to discriminate against others just because of their race or skin color. Personally, I don't know if I could've done what Ernest and the rest of the Little Rock Nine did. It definitely took a lot of courage for them to go through all that they did. I would most likely not have stood up for myself if I was one of the Nine, except I probably would've been quiet and just take it without fighting back. I definitely would not have made it through the year either, I would've dropped out like Minnie Jean because I wouldn't be able to take it. The only reason I would've stayed is the reason that most of the Nine stayed too, to try and make a difference in the world by trying to help to integrate the schools and end discrimination. Even though our country has come a long way since then, discrimination does still occur throughout the world, but in different forms. For example, people discriminate others in places like school, some think that they are better than others or don't include them because they may be different. I think that the overall message is to be kind to everyone and not judge people without knowing them.

X-Factor

I have a friend of mine that most of you may know, but I'm not sure if you know that she can SING!!! She is an amazing singer, so I am making her try out for the X-Factor. The auditions are in Denver on May 14th, which is a school day, so we may have to take a little field-trip. :) Maybe she will get to meet Simon Cowell and the other superstar judges, and she may even move on to the next round! Just remember, this is how One Direction was discovered too, so wish her luck!!!

The Defining Line

Article posted February 25, 2013 at 05:26 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 286

"Sports do not build character, they reveal it."
-John Wooden

Sports are a great defining line,
About whether someone is a good teammate, or likes to whine.
If you lose would you kick and scream?
Or would you shake it off and lift up your team?
Even though playing time may not be the same,
Would you still go back? For the love of the game?
If everything didn't go as planned,
Would you still lift your head up and give your teammate a hand?
Would you still be excited and smile,
If you weren't at the bottom of the dog-pile?
Sports can make you into a star,
But they can also show who you really are.
