Hanukkah

Article posted December 11, 2012 at 10:56 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 372

For my "Holiday Tradition Blog" I chose Hanukkah. Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday and is Hebrew for dedication. Hanukkah is also called "the Festival of Lights" and is celebrated for eight days which is how long the candles burned for. Hanukkah originated when Greece conquered Israel and forced them to abandon their beliefs in God and worship the Greek Gods and Goddesses. When the people of Israel finally defeated the Greek, they returned to their temple to worship God again but they had to "purify" and "rededicate" the temple before they could. According to the Mosaic law while they did that they must keep a light burning for eight days and nights but soon found out they only had enough oil for one night. Miraculously the light burned for the eight days and nights so people now use a menorah to light a candle on all eight nights of Hanukkah(one the first night, two the second, etc.). Hanukkah begins on the 25th of the Hebrew month Kislev.

Alpine Tundra

Article posted November 9, 2012 at 12:31 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 382

I did the Alpine Tundra for my biome. One organism is a pika and they eat buckwheat and live underground. A water pipet is a bird that eats springtails and lives by the water. A dandelion is a flower that is yellow and has layers of strips on it. They also have an orange center. I would not like to live there because it is very cold and windy. Plus the animals might scare me(like a weasel).

Project Knowledge

Article posted October 24, 2012 at 03:13 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 407

One of the main things I learned from the monster project is that you must work together and compromise for any project you do, especially ones where you have to do it as a group. Another thing I learned is that everything probably wont be how you want it the first time you do it. You either have to just stick with it or do it over again. Lastly I learned that you must communicate with each other when you are doing two things that go together, so that it looks nice in the end.

My Monster Part

For second period core connections I got the feet. Mrs. Lulek, Mrs. Feltz, and Mrs. Boyce's 4th grade classes at River Valley School in Lemont, Illinois sent the description in. The feet are rectangular with rounded edges and green with black polka-dots. They also have five bloody cuts and seven stitches on each foot. The feet are covered in brown hair and have three rainbow colored spikes on the heels too. I think the feet will connect to the toes, the legs, and the ankles if there are any.

Wonderopolis- Why Are They Called Lava Lamps?

Article posted September 24, 2012 at 02:37 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 514

I did wonder number 714, Why Are They Called Lava Lamps? I learned that a lava lamp is made of a special wax mixed with colored water above a light bulb. When the light bulb warms up the wax it rises and breaks into tinier pieces. By the time it reaches the top it gets colder and sinks to the bottom where it warms up again and the process starts over.

Vocab Word: mesmerizing- fascinating, magnificent, cool.
