Article posted September 16, 2012 at 12:02 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 428

Queenie, an Indian elephant was transported to Melbourne Zoo in Australia 1902 when she was six. Queenie gave rides to children when she was 9 and soon became a popular attraction. Queenie would give ride 6 days a week except Mondays.

Children would queue for hours to ride on Queenie. Children would also leave apples and peanuts for Queenie to eat. But one time some boy suck pins into Queenie’s truck. Queenie just went to her dirty water bucket and went up to he boy and sprayed it all over them, leaving them all wet.

Each year the children and keepers at Melbourne zoo would celebrate Queenie’s birthday.

After a while the zoo got a carousel and lots of children went on the new attraction as well as Queenie. Some children thought that Queenie was jealous of the carousel because the children went on that instead of Queenie so they sent Queenie letters to tell her that they still loved her.

One time in 1944 Queenie’s keeper, Wilfred Lawson took her back to her enclosure when he saw something on the ground and went to pick it up but Queenie accidentally walked on top of him and Wilfred Lawson died. It was then said that Queenie wasn’t allowed to give anymore rides even though the children loved him.

A couple years later war broke out and Queenie got less food each day and started to starve. After a while Queenie the Elephant was destroyed.

Area 9 read the true story about Queenie.

The story is about an Indian elephant who was captured at the age of 6  from India and taken to Melbourne Zoo in 1902. Queenie would take people for ries everyday exept Mondays, which is her day off. On her day off Queenie would have some time to play and relax, and her keeper Mr Parsons would wash her.-----Wile Queenie would walk around carring people, children would leave apples and peanuts, but some  children stuck pins in her trunk and thought it was funny, but Queenie fought back and sprayed the kids with dirty water.

A few years later the zoo got a carousel  and children loved it but this doesn´t mean the children stopped loving Queenie, infact children thought Queenie was jelous of the carousel and wrote letters to her saying they still love her.

In 1944 Queenie´s keeper Wilfred Lawson  was in Queenie´s enclosure and bent down to pick up somthing and Queenie accedently stepped on him. A corener said that Queenie killed  Wilfred on perpose and the zoo owner had no choice but to destroy Queenie because he thought it would be to dangerous to have her in the zoo.
