One skill from ELA that I can apply outside of class would be explaining and discussing my ideas. I could practice this by group discussion with family and friends where I'm able to comunicated my thoughts and ideas on certain subjects. For example, if I'm having a conversation with someone and I want to state my opinion I could practice explaining my perspective and discussing any opinions and ideas I have related to it.

Blog #3: The Internet

Article posted March 13, 2012 at 06:32 AM GMT • comment • Reads 233

There are certain things that I believe we the people are too dependent on in regards to the internet such as social networks and entertainment. For example, we shouldn't have to rely on Facebook or E-mail to keep in touch with family and friends. People have become so use to simply logging into a social network to send loved ones letters and pictures that we longer take the time to actually pick up the phone or get together in person. A lot of people spend too much time on the internet playing games and using it as a course of entertainment instead of being active and going outside.

Although the internet is very necessary in other sources of our daily lifes such as google and wikipedia which allow us to do research. The internet is essential to students for their education and even specific people and their careers. Doctors often use the internet and rely on it to keep up to date with medical research which is constantly changing. With this being said if the internet were to dissapear tomorrow I myself along with the majority of our world would be very negatively effected.

Blog #2: Reading

I don't do much reading of books or magazines during my spare time or for personal pleasure. The only thing that I really read on a daily basis is the newspaper. I read this so that I am aware of the events taking place within our community and around the world. What I do to ensure I'm reading it effectively is focus on the articles that discuss more important issues and I do this by reading the headlines that are specifically attention catching. One strategy I use to do this is by looking for specific words such as "disaster" and pictures that go with the title.

Blog #1: My First Impression

Article posted February 28, 2012 at 03:13 PM GMT • comment • Reads 185

This is my first time attending McLeod Adult Ed. My first impression of the school was that it was small, but this made me think that the class sizes would also be smaller and therefore the teachers would have more time to spend one on one with the students. My first impression of my English class was that it might be difficult considering my level of education. It's been 7 years since the last time I took any academic courses or attended school so I was pretty nervous, but after meeting my classmates and getting the feeling that I wasn't alone in my stiuation I felt a lot more confident. My first impression of my teacher Jody was that she looked young and willing to help her students in anyway possible.

What I plan to do in order to succeed in this course is try to keep up to date with all my assignments, ask for help when needed and make a commitment to attend all classes so that I don't fall behind in my progress.

My Favorite Movie

Article posted February 17, 2012 at 05:57 AM GMT • comment • Reads 356

My favorite movie is Scarface with actor Al Pacino. When this movie was released in 1983 it was not a success. It wasn't until the late 1990's when organized crime and street gangs increased that the movie gained popularity. Scarface was looked upon by gangsters as an "idol". I like this movie because it shows the difficult struggles of a Cuban immigrant coming to America, but also what he was able to achieve in a short period of time. I also like this movie because it is a prime example of the saying "more money, more problems" and shows how all good things come to an end in the drug world.
