I had no idea what to expect when I came to school that first day. That first week I would rather have been anywhere but here. I have learned how to read with pleasure again and not being so fussy about who the author is. Learned how to structure sentences to make reading them more pleasureable. I have gained a greater appreciation for authors, for writing is a tough task, at least for me. I have gained a lot of knowledge in understanding how stories are put togheter, what to look for when reading them so to better understand everything the author is trying to convey to his audience. I liked the class. Could we have done things differently? Maybe more aloud reading in class. To put it all together, I am glad I was here for this journey with you my fellow classmates and teacher. Hope you all have a great summer!

Making Connections (Blog 7)

Article posted May 16, 2012 at 04:59 PM GMT • comment • Reads 101

I just finished my assignment on making connections between two stories. I found it quite hard to write meaningful paragraphs in connecting the two.I write stuff down whenever it comes to me.I might be out on a bike ride or at work and something will come to me to add to my notes. I usually end up with a ridiculous amount of notes before putting it all togheter. I put sentences togheter, rearrange them, read them to see if they sound like anything I wouldn't mind reading. I think about stories I have read and how the writers use words and make connections. The most challenging part for me probadly was to make connections between the last sentence of one paragraph and the  next.

Goal

My current goal in English Language Arts is to improve in the area of my weaknesses at this point. I have to become much better at details to the smallest degree that I see in writings. It surprises me over and over again how much I missed by reading something over a second or third time. Oral communication in class has never been a strong point for me, but certainly I can try to improve on that. There are also other areas I need to improve on. I will focuss on all these areas and pay close attention to all the details I can think of.

In the story " The man who had no eyes", the blind peddler doesn't know that the person he stops on the street to beg from is blind also. The blind peddler has no idea that the man he is asking money from is the very same man he was with when he lost his sight. Because of this, he tells the story of how he lost his sight, changing it around to fit his current agenda. He doesn't realize the whole time he is going on about how he lost his sight, that the man who stands before him knows the truth. The Theme of this story is " Things are not always as they appear."

A conflict is important to all stories to make them interesting. Without conflict, there is no plot in a story. Conflict is what moves the happenings in the story along.Conflics are struggles, internal or external.Internal, a struggle against fate or circumstances, against ideas, practices or customs of other people. It can be a struggle within oneself, with ideas of right or wrong.External, a sruggle involving physical strength against another person or animals or the forces of nature.

Sometimes I like text with a lot of description, it depends on who the writer is and what the text is about. I like it if poetic language is being used but like sraight to the point stories to.I like mystery books, fiction, but like real life stories to. I usually look for certain authors. I like a variety of text as long as the writer makes them interesting.

Short Stories

Article posted March 5, 2012 at 03:29 PM GMT • comment • Reads 117

Short stories don't have a lot of characters normally. After you've been introduced to the characters, the plot follows, what is the story about, and the setting, where is the story taking place. Weather conditions may be noted or the landscape described. Short stories follow a sequence of events, leading up to its climax. After the story reaches its high, it starts winding down, things are explained and the story concludes.

First Impressions
My first impressions of being here in school is weird, and I have to put quite an effort into listening to what the teachers say, for, after not having been in school for so long, even the listening takes training.Jody, our teacher is very explainative and very heplful and I like the little daily edits that we started doing. The building is perfect for adult ed. and the rooms are also a nice size. I don't know any of my classmates well yet, but I'm already learning from them in assignment discussions. I will read and listen and do my assignment to ensure that I succeed as an adult student.

One of my favourite books is The Brothers Karamazov by Fiodor Doestoevsky.I like the book because it is so descriptive about three brothers who are so different from oneanother yet so linked together by Family ties. There are also some scenes in it that are described to the utmost.
