Laurie feels that he is better than Charles because of the way he talks about him. "Teacher spanked him and made him stand in the corner. He was awfully fresh." " Charles was bad again." The fact that Laurie was not put in the corner implies that he was good and therefore better than Charles. The word "bad" means that Laurie despises Charles' behavior. He would only do this if he thought he was better than Charles.
