History Project Essay
The Greek Olympic Torch
In ancient Greece they believed that Prometheus stole fire from the gods. They thought fire was a gift from the gods. The Greeks kept fires burning in their temples. They burned fires in the temple of Zeus and his wife Hera during the Olympic Games, A fire burned permanently on the altar of the goddess Hestia at Olympia. The ancient Greeks thought and cherished their gods so they did all of these things to honor them and to show sign of respect.
The time when the first Olympic torch was made was during the age of 776 BCE and it ended during the age of 383 AD. The torch was during these time periods because so were the Ancient Olympics and the torch was a symbol of these Olympics. The games were stopped because of him because he was a Christian fanatic and he hated Greek pagans. He did not want the Greeks to celebrate these Olympic Games. This was the main symbol for the Olympics.
This artifact is important to me but also to the whole world. It is important to Greeks because it symbolized spirit, knowledge and life. It is important to me because to me it is a great way to honor what the ancient Greeks did with a flame and it is also important to me because it shows that Greece is going to be with us for a long time and that its memory will carry on. The Olympic flame is important to the world because some people’s ancestors were Greek and they want to keep their memory alive of the Olympic Games. They want to feel the same way as their ancestors did so they celebrate the Olympics. Also the torch is important to people because some of them get to light it up so it would be important to them. It is important to the rest of the world because it is a special thing to see and it shows the history of something magnificent. It is important because it shows the importance of the gods and their offering to the Greeks and also a little to us. The mirror lights up the torch using its rays which is a way to honor the gods on their giving to us and it means that the light is from the gods.
In conclusion, the Olympic Games have provided many sources of entertainment and fun to us and the ancient Greeks. The time period of this Olympic flame was during 776 BCE to 383 AD. The Olympic flame is important to us and the world in many ways and there is a lot of significances in this artifact. Throughout this project, I have learned much significance in the ancient Olympic flame that was first shown in Ancient Greece.
