Architecture

The Tholos

The Tholos was an architectural building in ancient Greece. It was in the southwest side of the agora and was built in about 470 BCE. The Tholos is a round temple, coming from the word tholos, which means circle. The tholos was a purpose venue that served as a dinning hall and sleeping quarters for the Pytaneis. Pythaneis was located in the Athens and was home to the rich. It was also at Olympia.

In Greece, there is also a Tholos in Delphi. The tholos in Delphi was made in 380 and 360 BC. It is made from Doric columns. The tholos was the sanctuary of the Athens. It’s called the Athena Pronaia Sanctuary. Another word was Marmia. People came there to practice the petition of the oracle. There were also theories such as it was where statues were kept or that it was dedicated to a god or hero.

The tholos served as a mess hall to the council and as a small-scale boarding house. Their couches could not go against the walls because of its circular shape. They had to use rounded benches to sit the people. The tholos had a cone shaped roof. It was made to serve a dining room for members of the senate. Certain people were accepted to sleep at the tholos in case of emergency or unexpected issue.  The tholos represented the heart of the democracy. There were always citizens serving as senators there. The tholos also housed weights and measures that were inscribed and decorated.

A tholos is one of a kind in the agora. It’s a simple round building with six interior columns to support the roof. It serves as headquarters for presidents. Also known as the senate. The senate consists of 50 members of 10 Athenian tribes. The senates had to be on constant duty. They divided the day into three shift so 16-17 members were always present in case of emergency. For night shifts there were wooden benches or couches. The tholos was there to provide shelter to those who watched over the Athens

The tholos was also called tholoi, tholus, and tholi and beehive tomb. Its just a circular building with a vaulted roof no very fancy. Somewhere beehive shaped with a corbelled arch. It was a simple dining hall for the Athenian senate. It was a circular chamber. It has exquisite carvings and all this was eventually lost. That is the tholos.

Chiton

Artifact Essay

For our project we are doing a chiton, which is a Greek piece of clothing that men and women and woman both wore. The chiton was worn in the Archaic period (750 to 500 BCE), but the fashion ended in the Hellenistic period (323 to 30 BC). Woman usually wore them floor length and men wore them longer, the length being around their feet, although men later wore them shorter. At the shoulders brooches were attached to keep it in place. These were worn a lot and made the chiton look not as casual. A belt was, at times, worn at the waist. Archaeologists have found jewelry that seems to have been popular in ancient Greece. Men seemed to have worn jewelry also, but the fad ended in the fourth century. Women in ancient Greece had worn bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Greek clothing was very plain and simple. Women and men wore wool in the winter, and linen in the summer. Families usually made their own clothing, because cloth bought at the agora was usually expensive. The mother, daughters, and female slaves were the ones to make the clothing.

Ancient Greeks and the people of this generation are very different from us. In ancient Greece, barbarians were the ones who wore clothes that were tightly fitted. Nowadays, ancient Greeks would have called most of us barbarians for the clothes we wear. The pale skin, toxic make-up, and connected eyebrows were considered fashionable. In the world today, in most eyes, connected eyebrows are considered not attractive, and most people prefer to be tan instead of pale looking. As you can see, the Greek's choice of fashion was very different from ours.

The Greek chiton from Ancient Greece is very important to us. The chiton is important to us because we both enjoy sewing and it seems cool that the women from ancient Greece sewed their own clothing. It is a very beautiful piece of clothing that was popular at the time of ancient Greece. It is also neat because they made it at a time when there were no sewing machines or any electricity. The person that invented the chiton  must have been very artistic to think of such a beautiful design. It was very enjoyable for us to make this design because it was so important to the Greeks, and the ancient Greek world. Clearly, the Greek chiton is very important to us.

The chiton was a start to many more amazing designs in the fashion world. They helped to give the idea of developing clothing for different activities. For example, the exomis (chiton shortened with a strap on one shoulder) was worn for exercise related activities such as horseback riding and hard labor. The chitons were very significant to the ancient world. The chitons were often decorated to show the city-state of which the person lived. This made it even more significant because it helped others to know where they came from. Also if you were proud of your city-state, you may wear a chiton to show your pride. Overall, the Greek chiton has a significant part of history.

Happy New Year!!

Article posted January 4, 2012 at 06:17 PM GMT • comment • Reads 38

Many people celebrate New Years to hope for a good new year. But they don't know the real true start. New Years started with the Babylonians, who celebrated New Years in March. Then the Romans changed New Years to January. January's name comes from a two-faced god. The two-faced god looks backwards into the old year, then forward into the new. New Years truly started in 153 B.C. and continues to this day.

The first resolution I have for this year is to keep my room clean. It is normally pretty messy and hard to find things. The second resolution I have for this year is to do my homework quicker than I normally do, so that I have more time for fun and other things. The third resolution I have for this year is to practice dance more so that I don't mess up.
