Tholos at Athens

The structure we chose to make was the Tholos at Athens. There were many different types, but we chose this one because we have been learning about Athens and the structure seemed interesting. The Tholos was constructed around 470 BC and it existed for 800 years, until the fourteenth century. During those 800 years, the structure was never altered. The Tholos was associated with other buildings and they formed the administrative of the Athens. The Tholos was located in the agora and people jokingly called it the sun hat.

The Tholos was the meeting of the prytaneis who formed the Boule, and they were the people who made the laws of ancient Athens. The Boule contained 50 members from all the Athenian tribes. These 50 Athenians served for 1/10 of the year, and this was about 35 or 36 days. The members schedule made it clear that someone would always be present in the Tholos. This also made the Tholos act as a dining and sleeping area for those that had the night shift.

The Tholos consisted of columns, which were used for support and small decoration. The columns were known as Doric Columns. In the ancient times there were three main columns, which were used in most structures.  The most fancy of the three was the Corinthian column. This column was the most decorative and had many designs such as flowers or leaves and was the most detailed. Next, there was the Ionic column, which was a little less decorative, but still detailed. The last column was the Doric Column. It is the simplest of the three. This column had a capital, which was the top. It was made of a circle topped by a square. The shaft was the tall part of the column and had twenty sides. In the Doric column there was no base. The area above the column, the frieze, had plain designs, and was basically a band of design around the structure.

The Tholos was important to us and very significant, because it is where all the laws were made by the Athenian people. It was like a modern city hall and that is where are laws are made today for our city. It is also important to us because we admire the structure and we wish to build something like this when we are older. The Tholos is significant in history, because the pyrtaneis  met there to make laws and without a meeting spot their would be no laws. We learned from the Athenian laws and without a meeting spot, there would be no laws to learn from.

minor-latin">For our project we are doing a chiton, which is a Greek piece of clothing that men and women and woman both wore. The chiton was worn in the Archaic period (750 to 500 BCE), but the fashion ended in the Hellenistic period (323 to 30 BC). Woman usually wore them floor length and men wore them longer, the length being around their feet, although men later wore them shorter. At the shoulders brooches were attached to keep it in place. These were worn a lot and made the chiton look not as casual. A belt was, at times, worn at the waist. Archaeologists have found jewelry that seems to have been popular in ancient Greece. Men seemed to have worn jewelry also, but the fad ended in the fourth century. Women in ancient Greece had worn bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Greek clothing was very plain and simple. Women and men wore wool in the winter, and linen in the summer. Families usually made their own clothing, because cloth bought at the agora was usually expensive. The mother, daughters, and female slaves were the ones to make the clothing.

minor-latin"> Ancient Greeks and the people of this generation are very different from us. In ancient Greece, barbarians were the ones who wore clothes that were tightly fitted. Nowadays, ancient Greeks would have called most of us barbarians for the clothes we wear. The pale skin, toxic make-up, and connected eyebrows were considered fashionable. In the world today, in most eyes, connected eyebrows are considered not attractive, and most people prefer to be tan instead of pale looking. As you can see, the Greek's choice of fashion was very different from ours.

minor-latin">The Greek chiton from Ancient Greece is very important to us. The chiton is important to us because we both enjoy sewing and it seems cool that the women from ancient Greece sewed their own clothing. It is a very beautiful piece of clothing that was popular at the time of ancient Greece. It is also neat because they made it at a time when there were no sewing machines or any electricity. The person that invented the chiton  must have been very artistic to think of such a beautiful design. It was very enjoyable for us to make this design because it was so important to the Greeks, and the ancient Greek world. Clearly, the Greek chiton is very important to us.

minor-latin">The chiton was a start to many more amazing designs in the fashion world. They helped to give the idea of developing clothing for different activities. For example, the exomis (chiton shortened with a strap on one shoulder) was worn for exercise related activities such as horseback riding and hard labor. The chitons were very significant to the ancient world. The chitons were often decorated to show the city-state of which the person lived. This made it even more significant because it helped others to know where they came from. Also if you were proud of your city-state, you may wear a chiton to show your pride. Overall, the Greek chiton has a significant part of history.

New Year Resolutions

Article posted January 4, 2012 at 06:22 PM GMT • comment • Reads 51

The traditions of making New Year resolutions started in 153 B.C. The Babylonians had sarted making resolutions, except there was one big difference as of how we do it now. The Babylonians made there New year's resoluions in March. Later, the Romans started to make New Year's resolutions too. They changed it by starting to make them in January instead of March. January is named after the god Janus. There is a a statue of Janus with two heads, one looking foward into the new year the other looking into the past.

The first New Year's resolution I have is to listen to my mom more. To do what she asks right when she says it, and not say, wait a minute, and then not do it. My second Years Resolution is to get a better in Spanish. I want to raise my B to an A. I know I can do it I just have to try harder. My thhird New year's resolution is to go outside more. I am pretty lazy, so it would be good to go outside4 and get some fresh air. To be more active, and not sit on the coach on a nice day.
