mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Ancient Greek soldiers carried shields into battle for protection. Starting about 650 B.C. Greek generals trained their soldiers to fight in a formation. Soldiers lined up shoulder to shoulder in a straight line. That way enemy spears could not penetrate the line.

mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">Soldiers in a Greek army were called hoplites. The hoplites were Greek soldiers of the city states. As the Greek states could not Maintain armies they depended on the Greek  Generals population to provide safety.
