Assignment #3 Global warming is pretty simple to me; WE CAUSE IT. With temperatures rising and water levels also, what other excuse do we have? Here are 4 main causes of global warming. The first is carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants. With 40% of US CO2 emissions coming from electricity production, this is a main reason. The next reason comes from carbon dioxide emissions from burning gasoline for transportation. Though many cars don't produce this anymore, there are still some clunkers that still produce this harmful gas. The next reason/example is increase in usage of chemical fertilizers on croplands. Instead of the historical use of animal manure, we have started to use chemical fertilizers. These fertilizers contain nitrogen oxides, which has 300 more times the heat-trapping capacity per unit than carbon dioxide. The next example is deforestation, especially tropical forests for wood, pulp, and farmland. Trees take in carbon dioxide, and with less of them, carbon dioxide levels go up, which is another factor to global warming. I will also list some effects of global warming. The first is rise in sea levels world-wide. This can cause major flooding in coastal regions of many countries. The next effect is more major sever storms. They have increased since 1981 and can also devastate coastal regions. The next major reason is massive crop failures. This can effect farmers worldwide. The last effect is the widespread extinction of species. Global warming can extinct any kind of species, especially polar bears.
