She's from Germany. She moved to Amsterdam on 9th July, 1942 because she was hiding from the nazis during the World War II.

They lived in the back of a building, which they called achterhuis (Dutch word which huis means house and achter, further back). The door of achterhuis was covered with a shelving for couldn't see.

Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, Miep Gies and Elisabeth "Bep" Voskuijl were the only employees who knew of the hiding place and, along with Jan's husband, Gies and Johannes Hendrik Voskuijl, the father of "Bep" Voskuijl, were those who helped the Frank to survive for the duration of their confinement.
