Name This America Person: Dolley Madison

Article posted May 15, 2012 at 04:31 PM GMT • comment • Reads 253

Today, I am going to tell you about Dolley Madison! I hope you enjoy my essay! Dolley Madison was the 4th president’s First Lady of The United States from 1809 to 1817. She was also involved in the Revolutionary War. At 20, she became a seamstress. Her first husband was a lawyer. His name was John Todd. She had two boys, but one died with their father in 1793. She then married James Madison. She often performed at the White House too! She then also introduced Ice Cream to her guests. When the White House burned down in the war of 1812, she managed to save her husband’s forms and a picture of George Washington. The war was very hard for her when she was a child. She even had to move for North Carolina to Virginia. Her real name was Dorothea, but she later changed it to Dolley. We are going to celebrate her birthday on May 20th! Due to the American Revolutionary War, her father John Payne emancipated his slaves, which means he freed them. In 1783, 30,000 slaves were freed! But her dad died later in October of 1792. She then died on in Washitgon in 1849. I think it was great that she married one of the presidents of the United States! I would like to learn more about her too. I hope you enjoyed my essay and learn about her too!

The Rest Of The Summer

By Christine

Bolivia and Derek have fun teaching Lucette new tricks and new words. But Rory is not having any fun at all. He seems jealous because Bolivia and Derek are friends. He does not participate in the activities they do. He just watches them. He feels very sad and lonely.

Soon, Rory is getting use to Bolivia being around. They soon become friends! Now, Rory participates in play with Lucette. They also do other things. Sometimes they will go to the town pool, go to the park with Lucette and get ice cream. One day, they decide to climb trees. Rory decides to climb the tallest tree. Bolivia and Derek warn Rory to be careful, but he does not hear them. He soon loses his balance and falls. Bolivia and Derek run to him. They ask he is all right. He does not know. Derek then runs to Rory house to tell his parents. They call the ambulance. They then take Rory to the hospital. They have to wait for a while. After the x-rays are done, the doctor tells them that Rory broke one of his arm and one of his legs. They are very sad. He has to stay in the hospital for 4 weeks!

When they get back to Rory’s house, Bolivia has a brilliant idea! When Rory gets out of the hospital, they can have a Welcome Home party for him! Derek thought it was a good thought. So did Rory’s parents. But it would also cost a lot of money too. They decided that they would do it! The next day, while Rory’s parents visited Rory to keep them company, Bolivia’s parents, Bolivia, Derek, and even Rory’s baby sister Edna made a plan. They are going to invite neighbors and other people that Rory and his parents know. Lucette even helped! From then on, Rory’s parents visited him. 2 weeks have gone by. Just 2 more to go. They already invited 40 people to come. Then soon came one more week to go. Rory was going to be released on the Monday of next week. Saturday and Sunday were really busy days. They already had the decorations set up and the food was made. They even set up a jumping castle they had for many years.

Then Monday came. Everybody was very excited! They picked up Rory than took him back to his house. When they got in the house, everything was pitch black. People were hiding! They counted to 3 then turned on the lights! Everybody yelled “Surprise”! Rory was very happy! They then ate and played! It seemed like it would never end! But soon, everyone else started getting very tired! Rory was very happy and said “Thank You”! to the people who came and to Bolivia and Derek and his family!
For the rest of the summer, they had more fun and had been careful! But then, the summer ended and Bolivia had to go back to her home! The boys were very sad! But, Bolivia wrote frequently when she had time! The boys wrote back to! Then, the next summer, without even telling Rory and Derek, Bolivia came back! They had such a great time! They will never forget those summers together! I hope the one who read this essay enjoyed it!

How Are The Racers And The Dog Protected

Article posted March 27, 2012 at 04:08 PM GMT • comment • Reads 266

Do you want to know how the Jr. Iditarod protects the racers and the dog teams? If you keep on reading, you will know how! I hope you like my essay and it teaches
you about how and what they do to protect and keep them safe and healthy.

First, what the racers need to do is check if they have all the required equipment for them and the dogs. The racers need to have 2lbs of food for the dogs at all times.

At the ½ way checkpoint, the racers have to feed their dog teams. Did you know that the racers have to wait 10 hours at a ½ checkpoint? That is a very long time!

After the dogs are done eating, the racer has to check the dogs feet for injuries. If they do have injuries, they put on shoes that are called ‘’Booties’’ to protect them from further damage. They can also switch them for another dog.

After you read my essay, I am sure you will understand how to be a good racer and take good care of your dog team with respect, kindness, and treat your dog team how you would like to be treated.

New Equipment For The School

Article posted March 7, 2012 at 04:04 PM GMT • comment • Reads 251

Dear Mrs. Cruz,
A lot of students are bored at P.E. because they do not have a lot of equipment. I mean they do not have a lot of things like jump ropes, soccer balls, basketballs, or maybe even hula- hoops! Students feel bored because they feel like they have nothing to do.

If the school get’s new equipment, the student’s won’t be board at P.E. or recess! They will also have a lot more fun whether that is they are playing soccer, or jump roping!

They will enjoy the activities they will want to do because there is new stuff that they can do or play!

You will get healthier to because you are being active while having fun! You can be stronger too!

After reading my essay, I am sure you will be persuaded

Hattie Box's

Article posted December 8, 2011 at 03:57 PM GMT • comment • Reads 243

One sunny afternoon, there was a couple named Hattie and Otto. They were traveling to Nebraska to start a new life. The trip took almost two months to get to Nebraska. They traveled on a wagon with the horses pulling them.

Then finally, they got to their land. Out of nowhere, one of the wagon wheels fell off! Hattie thought that they could not go anywhere anymore. Then Otto made a mud brick to hold up the wagon until they got a spare wheel.

The next day, while Otto was working outside, a spider bit him! Hattie was looking for a doctor. She finally found one, but it would cost a lot of money. Hattie had to spend all her money! Hattie then had no money and thought that they would lose the land. The neighbors were generous to let Hattie and Otto stay at their house for a while. Otto finally got better, but Hattie and Otto were still staying at their neighbor’s house. Hattie had to see if there was any money in the box.

Hattie was about to open the box, but something stopped her. The neighbors were very rich, so they gave Hattie and Otto some money. Hattie said that they did not need to, but the neighbors insisted. Hattie thought that giving them money was so thoughtful of the neighbors so Hattie and Otto went back to their land. They were very happy. Hattie decided that she wanted to see if some money was in that box.

So Hattie went to get the box out. When Hattie opened it, the box was empty! Hattie was so mad at her brother, Spencer! But she was also happy because it was also a box of memories!

When Hattie wrote a letter to Spencer, Hattie said she was a little mad, but then she was happy because the box was full of memories. Hattie also said that she might visit him. So, when Spencer got the letter, he was so surprised! He had not seen Hattie in almost a year! So when Hattie saw him on his 100th birthday, they were so happy! But Hattie had to go back home. She was sad, but she very happy too. Hattie was happy because she got to see Spencer! Hattie also kept the box in a special place. Her heart!

My Mayflower Story

Article posted November 8, 2011 at 04:13 PM GMT • comment • Reads 283

Dear Amerie,
How are you? How is everyone back home? I really miss you! I can’t believe I am on a adventure to a unknown land! I am just a bit nervous too. I wish you could have come with me. I think we will make it to the unknown land. Wish me luck!

The other night, there was a huge storm! I was so scared. I stood close to my mother in the dark. The sailors had to furl the sails down fast! All the people down below were cold and damp. Later the storm passed, I went up on deck. Then more storms came. I was afraid that we would run out of food, or the ship would sink. The lightning was strong that it shook the ship. People wondered why we were going to the unknown land. My mother said why we were going to the unknown land because so we can be free. And to believe in what we want to believe.

Just then, the captain fell overboard! I thought he was going to fall and die! Just then, one of the men got a roped, and told the captain to grab onto it. Then they pulled him up. And his life was saved.

We did not have that much food, all w ate was bread and cheese. The bread was really hard. The cheese was mushy.

One of the sailors had said that we are close to land, but I did not believe him. But then I stared at the land. The captain said Land Ho! Looks like all those months were worth it.

I really miss you! I hope I can see you again. You should me someday.
