Inquiry

Article posted August 24, 2010 at 04:06 PM GMT+11 • comment • Reads 402

As part of our 'Kiwi Kai' Inquiry on 'fish and chips we experimwnted with different types of chips to see which would cook the fastest in the oven over a 12 minute time frame.
We cooked thin cut, fat cut, crinkle cut and kumara
chips in the oven.
Mmmmmm!
Guess which chips cooked the fastest?
The thin cut chips were overcooked and the fat cut chips were still soft. The crinkle cut chips were crunchy and tasty and so were the kumara chips.
Why did the thincut chips cook the fastest?Link:

Cupcakes

Article posted August 6, 2010 at 02:09 PM GMT+11 • comment • Reads 581

Our letter of the week is C.
We had a cupcake with the whole class with brown chocolate icing which was sweet.
We put red, orange, yellow and green frog lollies on top of the icing.

Can you find all the describing words in our story?

Pyjama Party at School.

Article posted July 23, 2010 at 02:16 PM GMT+11 • comment • Reads 426

We wore our pyjamas at school today because our letter of the week was 'p'.

We made pikelets to eat for our party. Some people had a turn at flipping the pikelets over in the pan.
We put syrup on our pikelets.
We brought our cuddly toys to school and we read stories to them.

It was good fun lying on our pillows and listening to some stories about the dark and the kittens.

My Wild Thing

Article posted May 7, 2010 at 11:52 AM GMT+11 • comment • Reads 921

As part of our unit Where the Wild Things Are we had to use our imagination to create our own Wild Thing.
We drew our own picture of what our Wild Thing looked like and then we wrote a story about the Wild Thing.
We wanted to scare people with our stories so we had to think about what words we could use in our story to really scare the people who are reading them.
Mrs. O'Connor was so scared when she was reading them she had to turn on all the lights in the classroom!
Here are some of our stories.
My Wild Thing catches tractors and pushchairs in his metal claws and his metal razor sharp teeth cut through it.
Simon.

My Wild Thing has a golden nose to smell the butterflies and he eats the butterflies when he finds them.
Jordan.

My Wild Thing catches people with it's tail and throws them up into it's mouth. He stamps on the cars and takes the people back to his family.
Tyler.

Anzac Day

Article posted April 30, 2010 at 10:39 AM GMT+11 • comment (2) • Reads 213

Last Friday we made special biscuits. They are called Anzac biscuits. We used coconut and flour and butter and golden syrup.
We found out how they got their special name. People in New Zealand made them at home to send to the soldiers who were fighting in the war.
We also made a special poppy wreath. We took our wreath over to our church so the people could pray for the soldiers who died in the war.
It was good to learn about why we celebrate ANZAC DAY.

Rosie said we ripped the paper to small pieces. there was a machine that goes wizz wizz wizz. we pushed and squeezed the paper with a frame to get all the pulp and water out of the paper. with the paper you have to be nice and gentle otherwise it might rip.

The Nest

We are now back in blogging mode after2 years.
Children will be blogging about work they are doing and sharing photos and experiences.
We are currently working through our Inquiry unit called INVENT and our focus is on that great invention-Paper.
Last week The Nest visited Homeprint in Feilding and we were so lucky to meet and work with John Brebner who showed the children how to make paper.
We would like to share some stories with you.

Reuben said we put the paper in a box and and rolled it back and forth. We ripped up the paper and put it in a container. We also put it in a special machine which squeeezed the paper so there was no water in the paper.

Jody and I took The Nest and Voyagers to Dannevirke to visit the Fantasy Cave. We had a wonderful day and the children were very excited to see and touch all the wonderful displays.
We saw many Small Worlds!
Space world, undersea world, nursery rhyme world,
fairy tale world and many more.
We weren't allowed to take any photos but that's okay because we hope that lots of other people will visit.
Thankyou to the wonderful people who volunteer and work there as well as making all the wonderful displays. You make a lot of children very happy!

We are already well into our Small World study of Life in The Dolls House.
We are wondering where dolls houses were first made.
We are wondering what dolls houses are made from.
We are wondering who makes dolls houses.
We are wondering what different kinds of dolls houses there are.

Tomorrow we are going to visit the Fantasy Cave in Dannevirke as part of our study.
We are going on the bus. The children are very excited about their trip.

Last weekend we visited our daughter in Dunedin.
It was a first time visit and we were amazed by the beauty of the city. Lots of lovely old churches and buildings.
We walked up the worlds steepest street -Baldwin street. Check out the view from the top.
It was a good walk and we all made it without too much of a struggle.
