We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

well we are supposed to say what we learned about friction.
lesson 1: i learned that different surfaces have different amounts of friction. the fine sandpaper has the most friction.
lesson 2: i learned that with more weight comes more friction. like if you pull 2 blocks, it has more friction than with just 1.
lesson 3: i learned that different sides of the block have different amounts of friction, but its not much of a difference.
we measured sliding friction by using spring scales in class. friction can be measured when it pulls back on the object you are pulling. so when you pull it, you can measure the resistance with a spring scale, and that is
friction and that is how you can measure friction with a spring scale.
we learned that controlled variables are important. plus also here are some examples.
1:distance pulled
2:slope
3:surface type
4:speed
5:block type
those are things that are controlled variables, which means they stay the same.
well, yep! thats it! bye!

first of all, i think its REALLY annoying how NOBODY outside of chimacum blogs about stuff that is not required. and they ALL say the same thing, like they just copied it off the board.(which they may have..) and sooooo.... yeah thats it.
AAnyway, on to activity 3!
well i watched the digital dossier video thing. actually it was kinda creepy how ALL YOUR LIFE can be found on the internet. but i figured ou that i have like, NO digital footprint, because first of all, i have no facebook or anything, second, i have like ZERO internet access away from 1st period science and the library, and third, i googled my name and came up with a singer. so i am leaving like, NO footprints WHATSOEVER. but thats kinda good. yep.

this is persuasive writing. students should have a personal blog from 6th grade onward. this is because it helps them communicate with the outside world. in all classes (except for maybe history or something...)it would help other people that read our blogs to learn if we made a post every period or something along the lines of that.also, blogging is fun. its definitely better than just writing on paper and pinning it up on a wall somewhere.
but blogging also has its bad spots. like hackers, cyberbullies, and what happened to one of my friends. internet immersion. thats whan your your life starts revolving around youtube, anime game sites, quizazz, and when your next computer time is. this was especially hard for me and one of my other friends, because we both have no internet at home whatsoever. i think shes still at it .
well that is the persuasivest blog i have ever wrote. and that is why students should have a blog starting in 6th grade. yep! thats it!

so to tell you how to pull a cart across the floor with a rubber band. yeah. so anyway what you do is you stretch a rubber band WAAAAAAY far and you tie it to a wall and a cart. then you let it go and PRESTO the cart flies through the wall! YAY! and that has something to do with elastic force! because the rubber band is like elastic!

we went to this wierd website where it said stuff about "the atoms family" or whatever. heres the link, just in case you want to LEARN something. http://www.miamisci.org/af/sln/
yep. its kinda interesting. well anyway i have to say what i learned. so yeah. anyway, the first thing that i learned was
that in 2010 we used 164 pounds of carbon dioxide emmisions, versus 1930, when people used only 153pounds. big difference!
the second thing i learned is
that more insulation helps you be more conservative with energy, because you dont have to use the heater/air conditioner that much.
NEXT IS ELECTRICAL SAFETY! i learned that sticking a fork in the toaster is not really a very good idea and that bare wires can start fires. (hey that rhymes!) and lots of other HEALTHY tips like that!!
aaaaand thats about it!!
byyyeeee!!

dis is what i learned.
what i learned is that batteries are unreliable and cannot be trusted. you know why? because everybody elses batteries charges for the exact same time, and then THIER flashlights stay on for stuff like 80 seconds, AND THEN YOURS STAYS ON FOR SEVEN SECONDS. DISGRACEFUL. and then you get so mad and then you want to kill it.
and that is what i learned.
hahahahahahahahahahahaha fooled you! thats not all that i learned! i learned that the longer you charged the battery, the longer it stays on! THAT is AMAZING! and also i learned that we normally use dry-cell batteries for stuff like flashlights. and that it has something acid-y called electrolyte solution and you get a copper rod in it too. also zinc. and thats about it!

how to charge a battery. this is an interesting question.... hmmm. well mr. g explained this, and it is long and complicated. so we better start soon!
a battery is a thing that STORES energy. the energy is called
STORED CHEMICAL ENERGY. this is an important phrase. i actually have no idea why, but mr. g said it was, so..... yeah.
so the stuff is inside the battery can convert to electric energy, and eventually to heat and light energy(which is what a lightbulb gives out.) so what do you do when the battery runs out of energy? HAHAHA! i know and YOU dont! but i will TELL you because mr. g said i had to. blah. well the charger goes ZZZWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!! and it does stuff thet makes me feel scienc-y. like charging positive electrolyte. and other technical stuff. well pretty mach it just charges that electrolyte solution so it has more power in it. and thats about it. the end!

we were making batteries in science and we had to answer this queshdin on our blog so here i go.
HOW DOES ZINC COPPER BLOTTER PAPER AND ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION MAKE A BATTERY?
well now thet one is a toughie....hmmmmmm..... well, i guess it makes a battery by having a chemical reaction. the blotter paper is neccesary because if you didnt have it.... you would get a short circuit. no idea what that means, though.
but whatever. so the main point is, the chemical reaction reacts and that makes the zinc loses negatives and the copper gains them. with positives its the other way around. THAT makes electricity.

we are doing water quality and we have to write a CONCLUSION. (neh neh!) This means that i will be typing for FOREVER and will probably not ge it done till may. but i will start now and hopefully it will be done soon.
starting with D.O. D.O. is dissolved oxygen.
this is what i learned about D.O. oxygen goes into the water by touching it. ( cool....) and so that means that (of course) the top of the water would have the more D.O. so when you see the fish GULPING THEIR POOR LUNGS OUT AT THE TOP OF THE WATER you know that the poor fishies are needing more D.O.
this years average D.O. was 9.16 mpl (milligrams per liter) that is goodish. i cant really tell, because my job was NOT D.O. and the people whose job it was are all like "uuuhhhhh.... yeah." and that is a disgrace i tell you!
next is pH. pH is like how acidic or basic the water is (i think...) it stands for Positive Hydrogen Ions
this years average is 6.314190 that is almost perfect, but a little bit acidic. here it is
13 = bleach
12 = soapy water
11 = ammonia solution
10 = milk of magnesia ( that medicine thingy )
9 = baking soda
8 = seawater
7 = pure perfect water!
6 = acidy
5= acidy
4 = acidy
3= acidy
2 = acidy
1 = REALLY acidy!
and that explains how good our score is and it IS wonderful!!
next is TURBIDITY=http://=http://=http://=http://=http://=http://=http://=http://=http://
this is MY parameter and so you can expect me to be an expert.(mwwwahhhhahahahahahah!) turbidity pretty much means how clear the water is. our average (without DIRT added to the water!) is 35.2714285714 that is almost PERFECTLY wonderful and perfect but its DEFINITELY acceptable and the fish are ok with it, so we are too. turbidity is the difference between clear and dirty water. that pretty much explains it..... hopefully.
nitrates
What is this year
0.3
What does that mean about our creek
what are nitrates? oooooo brown blood disease methemo goblin something. in 2011-2010 it went waaay up to 2.... nitrates help soil. nitrogen makes up air, like 80 percent of air! so how can we breathe it and..... not get methemogoblin? hmmmm so it goes into the plants and the aminals eat the plants and then they DIE and decompose and thats how the nitrates get into the creek? AHA!!!! we can not get methemo-goblino-diseaso because the bacteria hasnt got the nitrogenyet! how do they get into the water? AHA again!! people do it! pesticides and such! bacteria gets the nit and puts it into the plants so they can use it! pertilizers is aminal waste, right? so the aminals have eated nitrates...... and so their waste is ........NITRATES! oh wait! mogob offects babies mostly.... oh no! blue baby syndrome! cry sad! oh well. the best year was 2008-2009! oooooo! good!
those were my notes for the nitrates presentation
Ammonium
What is this year
2.828 mgl is that bad? the probes apparently dint work mayby. data is wrong!! this is the lowest # that we could find! the probes REALLY dint work.
ammonia. stuff. ammmonia is found in claening supplies it smells bad common ghoushold chemoical. whaen pure, it is really smelly. can speed eutrification? dunnoo..... is not a gas ? colorless liquid. ginny pigs yuck smells like ammonia. at anderson lake algae was all over so so much bacteria used up al the DO so the dogs died. tis not good. bleach is not ammonia. dont mix them.BAAAAAAAD. ammonia is all bad?...useful in the soil......but not in the water.
Who
Flow Rate
What is this year
1.3459 is that good? cubic meters per second. awkward.
What does that mean about our creek
its how fast the stream is going?..... ish how much water is passing by one point at one time.... the graphs are kinda wierd many kinds of low rate.... is the average good or badddd. "dunno"
does bigger propeller make different #s "dunno" the i forget the i forget. the data x area= STUFF! hhhhrmmmmm. dont really know what this is....... if fish can hang out with in this creek the flow is good ........ sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo there WAS fishies there .........soooooooooo........thats goodish?!...........this is an awkward moment. qweshdions noww? AHA!! comments! the end. the no clue. dunno what to saay. the end.
Who
Temperature
What is this year
33.5 water 37 air
What does that mean about our creek
thats is good! different salmon have different temps to be the best health. deep watr takes longr for deeper water to heat up. without the right temp fish will die. oxygen can dissolve in colder water better. if it got to 60 gdecgrees, it would die.in summer they go tho oceans for cooler water, so they never really get used to the HOT water. sockeye is coldre for them to spawn. coho need if its not toocold that EGGS cant have it too hot or cold. waaaaiiiiiiit..... this graphis wrong. sorry! under 50 s gooood! bluegill can tolerate ANYTHING!! dont think theyre from around here..... in the summer low 50s is the highest you wanna get. the end!
so these are all my notes and hopefully you understand them cause i cant. thank you and goodnight!
(if you have any qweshdions, comment an i will comment back)

we did water quality and my job was turbidity. parameter means job. this is another Q+A session, so you can skip around. **what is your parameter?** hmm, i sorta already answered this... well, mai parameter is turbidity. that means measuring how much stuff is in the water, how clear it is. **how does it affect water quality?**
it affects it by blocking light. no light equals no plants. no plants, well, no oxygen.
DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD.
**how is it measured?**
in NTUs. Nephelometric Turbidity Units. heres how you get the NTU count. you take a water sample in a little test tube and put it in a little machine thing and close the lid. it shoots light through the water to sensors on the other side, and if there is stuff in the water, it can sense it.
**what levels are good?**
low levels, like 0-25 NTUs
**what levels are acceptable?**
toughie......well......lets see...25-100 NTUs......the higher levels arent very acceptable though.... they are more NOT acceptable.....
**what are bad levels?**
100+ NTUs now that just makes me SAD.
**how does it affect fish?**
hhhhrrrmmmm...... well.... ok, done thinking. large amounts can clog the gills of fish and shellfish directly, so they suffocate. particles can provide a home for harmful microorganisms. fish cant see very well in turbid water, etc.
**how does it affect people?**
its bad for them, stuff can stick to the particles of dirt and you can get sick
thats all about my parameter. the end.

Hahahahahaha! You know what you can do on classblogmeister? Well (wow cool hahahahaha!!) you can look up schools EVERYWHERE! Like even england and stuff! And so what i did was i went to a school in australia and i commented all over the place! It was VERY interesting. So, what you should do is go to classblogmeister.com and look up wherever you want to comment on, and whatever you do, leave your URL. So they actually know where your blog is. So that is the good plan of mine, to explore other places!

we went on a science field trip to plant trees beside a creek. (this helps fishies, yes it does) so anyway we went and i planted 8 trees. i named them all.
1. shrubby
2. poky
3. princess olah
4. squirmy
5. pants
6. skirt
7. lee lee
and
8. teeny.
these little trees were so cute! we planted them SOMEWHERE behind fat smittys........ im not completely sure exactly where.... well, saying thanks to the people who made it possible and also doug, our group leader and jac and aleena (aleina alleenah, whatever.) we had a really fun time, playing in the mud, plantind trees, hopping over creeks , naming random trees random names, galloping through some dirt, lalalalalalalalalalallalalala!! yes as you can see, it was really fun and i wish to do it again, except next time i think i will plan on getting even DIRTIER!! thanks SO MUCH for the help planning such a wonderful trip, and to the trees, i say, you better grow big and huge or else!! this is something about salmon. its gonna be kinda boring, but, but, but, read it anyway.
so first the salmon are born. they come out of eggs. they are usually reddish pinkish.
See? Salmon eggs! Oh and here is a link 4 a real salmon egg pic! http://www.seymoursalmon.com/images/lifecycle/eggs.jpg
And thats a good picture.
Anyway, then they hatch into alevin. I know, wierd name. But thats what its called. The alevin have a yolk sack attached to them, and (its really wierd.) the yolk sack stays for a few weeks. While the yolk sack is still not absorbed, the salmon stay in the gravel. When its gone, the alevin come out and they are fry now.and here is a pic of alevin!
and here is a pic on a website!! http://www.seymoursalmon.com/images/lifecycle/alevin.jpg
now about fry!fry immedietly start looking for food, because they have no yolk sack left. yes this is yukky, but they eat their dead parents. eeew. oh and plus bugs. teeny bugs.

This is how we scored the creek by looking at bugs. MAGIC=http://!! not really. There is a sheet that tells you which bugs are which, and how sensitive (tolerant) they are. The sensitivest ones like (grrr) mayflies score the highest, 4 points. the score goes down for the more tolerant bugs. the most tolerant ones are like leeches and worms and stuff. ew. ew.ew.ew.
anyway, then you check off what kinds of bugs you found. on the sheet where you check them off, the bugs are divided up into the intolerant and toleranter groups that i explained. then, you add up all the scores for all the different types of bugs. you dont say, like, "well i found 6 mayflies, so the score for mayflies is times 6!"
you dont really care how many of a type of bug you found, just that you found it.so,then you add up the score and you get the number! the end.

This is a stonefly larva. It was dead, so it was easy to take a picture of. You can tell its a stonefly because it has 2 tails.(well im not super sure but mr. Teacher guy says, so ok!)It scored pretty high(very intolerant or sensitive to pollution) so we got plus 4points!
This, apparently, is another stonefly....
Ok, its not my fault that all my partners took pictures of were stoneflies=http://.......
Breakthrough! This may be a damselfly larva!............or a........
.........stonefly........NOOOOOOOO!!!!
Well, if you dont want to look at just STONEFLIES, look at someone elses blog!

This is NOT an assignment. These are my pet peeves.
1.Siblings. They are so obnoxious. I have to share my room with a 4 year old. I used to have to share my room with a 16 year old and a 7 year old. It was horrible. Also my brother is annoying too.
2. Siblings' friends.My 4 yr old has 2 friends, e and l. They tore apart my room. i had to scream at them.
3.oranges. and orange peels.
4. friends that move away and friends that are in 7th grade and who never pay any attention to you and they just ignore you when you try to say hi.
5.slow computers.
6.people who try to take pictures of you when youre trying to be an old lady.
7.sour milk.
8. people who tell you to talk and then interrupt you.
9. loud chewing noises.
10. wind when im trying to work

Ok, so this is pretty much Q&A. But don't worry, it's interesting!! (you can skip to prghph 5 if you want to.it's the important part)
1.what is water pollution?
* water is considered polluted when chemicals, pathogens, or contaminants are found in the water.
(these are the 7 types of water pollution)
*surface water pollution
*groundwater pollution.
*oxygen depleting pollution.
*large concentrations of nutrients.(pollution)
*microbiological
*suspended matter
*chemical
and THAT, folks, is paragraph number 1!!!
yayyyy!! wooohooo!!:D
2. What are some of the sources of water pollution?
well, this question is not what mr.teacher guy wanted the answers to. he wanted me to answer the question called....
2.explain what the 7 types of pollution do to our waters.SO I WILL! HAHA! WHAT NOW MR. TEACHER GUY!
*surface water(oceans,rivers,lakes)pollution.the answer (yes the ONLY answer, mr. teacher)is REALLY vauge,but here it is.
"these waters can become polluted a number of ways, and this is called surface water pollution"
heres the link to the site.http://www.water-pollution.org.uk/
wow. that didnt work.ummmmmm.....
*groundwater pollution is usually caused by pesticide contamination in the soil, this can infect our drinking water and cause huge problems.
*oxygen depleting pollution. this one is kinda complicated. when too much biodegradable stuff is in the water, the # of microorganisms increase and use up the oxygen. this is called oxygen depletion.
*nutrients.(HUH? youd think that nutrients would be a good thing, but this is an assignment about water POLLUTION.not good healthy water stuff.this is what it actually means.)if large amounts of wastewater or fertilizer get into the water, too many plants grow, and that is bad because tht can contaminate drinking water, and clog filters. this can also be bad for other aquatic animals because the plants use up all the oxygen if there are too many of them.
*"microbiolgical water pollution is usually a natural form of water pollution caused by microorganisms." many microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa live in water and can cause fish,animals, and humans to get sick
*suspended matter...............
some pollutants dont dissolve in water 'cause their molecules are too big.this stuff is called particulate matter (wow, long strange words, anyone?)toxic chemicals can be suspended in water too.
NOT GOOD!! TOXIC!!?? =O
*chemical. many different chemicals can run off into water and pollute it. metals and solvents from industrial work and stuff can pollute rivers and lakes.pesticide run-off is BAD.but oil spills are really bad.they can kill fish and endanger birds and stuff because they can't fly because of the oil. See? Bad.
3.what are some of the consequences of water pollution?
*the food chain can be damaged
*diseases can spread easier via polluted water
*acid rain (ACID RAIN?!I didn't know there was acid rain!!!) can harm fish and plants
*food sources contaminated
4.what can be done to improve the quality of water after it has been polluted?
*to keep water clean, sewage goes to a water treatment plant where it is cleaned chemically so it's safe
*also, ozone wastewater treatment is popular.it breaks down pollutants in the water.
*Dentrification is an ecological approach that can be used to prevent the leaching of nitrates in soil, this in turn stops any ground water from being contaminated with nutrients.I have no idea what that means, but mr. Teacher guy wanted more examples, so I gave him....... AN EXAMPLE!!!
IMPORTANT PART!! READ THIS!!! HELLO!! READ. THIS.
DOWN HERE!! LOOK=http://!!!! READ THIS ALREADY!!!!
5. What are some actions that can be taken to help prevent water from being polluted?
*paint, oils, and other stuff like that DO NOT belong down the drain!! It doesn't really tell you what to DO instead, but I SAY PUT THEM IN THE GARBAGE CAN!
*don't overuse pesticides and fertilizers
*don't litter=http://
The end!!

The evidence that the mountain will grow and be the same again is that the lava dome is growing a whole bunch!!
So, if it doesn't blow before it fully rebuilds, it will probably be completely re-toppified within about 150 years.
The end by catfood
