The Greek Shields
Shields were invented in 700 B.C.. Greek shields were made of many layers of metal, bronze, and copper. They were designed to give a warrior protection in battle. Most shields were painted, many of the decorations were mythological symbols meant make people think of the legends of Greece. They put symbols of there leaders, animals, or designs. Some shields were decorated with the first Greek letter of whichever city state the soldiers came from. The shield pictured here has the Greek letter L on it. The Greek letter L represented what we know as an S, and stood for Sparta. Shields weighed about 15 to 20 pounds. Sometimes they would carve out the sides of a shield to make it lighter.
This artifact was important because if they didn’t have any shields back then they would get killed very quickly. These shields were a very key part of ancient Greek equipment. The Greek general taught their soldiers to fight in a line.
In conclusion the Greek shield played a great part in the battles that they had. They were made of many types of mettle. They usually had bronze on the top.
