Parthenon

Article posted March 23, 2012 at 01:42 PM GMT • comment • Reads 45

The Parthenon is a large temple from ancient Greece architecture. The architects of the Parthenon had set out to make this the best temple ever. The Parthenon in Athens is the most famous surviving building of Ancient Greece and one of the most famous buildings in the world. The significance is important because it is probably the best example of Greek architecture that we have left.
If you look at a lot of the buildings and architecture we have in this country or elsewhere in the world you can tell that they are based on Greek architecture. . Three buildings based on Greek architecture are the U.S. Capital Building, Second Bank of America and the Washington Monument .
In order for this new, large, beautiful temple, the Athenians used the tribute money from their allies that was supposed to be spent for defending the Greeks from Persian invasions. The Parthenon construction cost the Athenians 469 silver talents.
The Parthenon was built on top of the highest hill in Athens, the Acropolis. After the Greek and Persian Wars, the Athenians left the Acropolis in ruins, as a kind of war memorial. But by the 440’s BC, a generation later, the Athenians wanted to rebuild their Parthenon bigger and better than before. The Athenians had hired two great architects, Callicrates and Ictinus, and a great sculptor, Phidias, to rebuild the Parthenon. This time the whole building would be made of beautiful marble. The marble was the latest style and it was also big. Most Greek temples had six columns across the front but the Parthenon has eight. There's a set of trigyphs and metopes on the main the lowest division of an entablature resting in classical architecture on the capital of the column, over Doric columns. There is also a frieze on the inner architrave, over the Ionic columns. So while most Greek temples are either Doric or Ionic, the Parthenon is both.
Throughout its long life, the Parthenon was used for most importantly as a Greek temple, but has also been a treasury, a fortress, a church, and a mosque. Today, it is one of the most recognizable icons and popular tourist attractions in the world. The Parthenon remains as an important piece of history today because it stands as the symbol of both Ancient Greece and of the age of Athenian Democracy. Although some consider it to be both an old and a new Parthenon the history of the Parthenon is part of its appeal. The many decorative sculptures that decorate or add beauty to the Parthenon are considered to be the highest forms of Greek art.
As you can tell, the Parthenon is a very famous and popular building. It is very different than a lot of other Greek buildings and other architecture. That is what we have learned about The Parthenon

Greek Pots
Going back to 7000 B.C.E., Greek pottery is some of the oldest and most historically, rich ceramic work in the world. Ancient Greek civilization lasted for about 1300 years, so their pottery changed over time.
At first their pottery would have been used for practical reasons like carrying wine or storing grain. Common shapes for their pottery were large jugs with 2 handles called amphoras, crater which were bowl shaped, and kylix which were wide cups with handles.
Overtime the Greeks started to decorate their pottery. They shaped the pots out of clay on a potter’s wheel, and then they started to paint methodical scenes on them. The Greeks also put paintings of people on the pots.
In one method of making pottery, called the black figure technique, pictures were first carved into clay and then those carvings were filled in with darker clay, which would turn black after the pot was then fired in a kiln. At first the designs were simple natural subjects and designs of daily life, athletic games and figures from myths and legends.
Developed in the late 6th century B.C., the red figure technique heralded a new era of very good detailing and realism in Greek pottery decoration. Red-figure had red-orange subjects on a black background. Figures were delicately put into the unfired clay and then were outlined in black clay slip while the background was also filled in with black. Fine details were added by using black, maroon, white and sometimes gold pigments.

My New Years Resolutions

Article posted January 6, 2012 at 03:01 PM GMT • comment • Reads 60

Making resolutions on New Years stated over 2000 years ago. The Babylonians started it by borrowing things that year and then giving it back the next year.
One of my resolutions at home is to keep my room clean. Also another one is to start to do some chores so that I can get money.
One of my resolutions at school is to get a better grade in math. I always don’t do good in math so I want to get better grades this year.
My last resolution is to be better at gymnastics and swim because I do both of those and in gymnastics I will start competitions soon so I want to learn how to be better at it. In swim I want to be faster and butterfly better.
Those are my New Years resolutions.

Veterans Day

Article posted November 18, 2011 at 02:38 PM GMT • comment • Reads 110

Veteran’s day is observed on November 11. It was first named Armistice Day. It honors people in the military. My dad and uncle are in the military. My dad is in the Coast Guard and my uncle is in the Navy. Also my history teacher Mr. Gallagher is in the Army.

The Tomb of Unknowns is a grave where some soldiers who died in battle and could never be identified are buried.
The colors of the flag stand for the four points of the compass. The poem “Freedom Isn’t Free” means that you have to fight for your freedom and it takes hard work.
