We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Well it all started when two rivals is the state of Washington. The rivals are the University of Washington ( UW or Udub for short ) and Washington Sate University ( WSU or Wazoo for short ). Now the mascots for the teams are the Huskies ( UW ) and the Cougars ( WSU ). Now since there rivals they decided to make it more fun so each year they have the Apple cup which is when they play a football match at each others stadium last year it was at WSU this year it's the Huskie Stadium at UW and the winning team gets this trophy. The reason it's called the Apple Cup is because Washington State is famous for it's apples our state fruit. Anyway my money is on the UW Huskies but I have a friend who's more of a WSU fan so this is going to be interesting so are you a WSU or UW fan? So I got nothing else to say but GO HUSKIES=http:// Article posted November 20, 2013 at 05:17 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 50

What we did is that we put different things in thease beaker things ( yes I know I said thing.) and labeled it in alphabetical order from A to E then we have 3 groups of different teams gets a certain liquid. Liquids 1 2 and 3. Mr. G. Didn't tell us what the liquid and substances is until the end of the experiment. Heres what the liquids where. Liquid 1: salt what ( teams1-4 ) Liquid 2: sugar water ( teams 5-8) Liquid 3: just plain old water ( teams 9-12) Now here's what's in the beakers and the answer to if they where alive or not and what happened in each liquid. A: red sand (non living) so it didn't do anything in any liquid B: yeast ( no evidence of life in any liquid so I'm still fuzzy on this one). C: Polyacrylate crystals A.K.A. Orbeez ( they grew but crystals can't be living in any liquid bu grew most in liquid 3.) D: radish seeds ( its oviouse that it's alive it grew in only liquid 3). E: brine shrimp A.K.A sea monkeys ( alive of course but only hached and swam around in liquid 1.) Article posted October 31, 2013 at 05:30 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 60

Flowers 2. Potatoes 3. Bunnies 4. People 5. Trees 6. Cows 7. Dogs 8. Salmon 9. Grass 10. Apples ( not the iPad ) But that's only a handful of living things don't worry there's more. Now here's what's non living. 1. Rocks ( but that doesn't mean you can't keep it as a pet.) 2. Mountains 3. Chairs 4. Minerals 5. Sand 6. Paper ( it's made out of a living thing but isn't living) 7. Houses 8. Tables 9. Peanut butter 10. Bacon ( was living) In order for something to be living it needs to have theses characteristics. 1. Cells 2. Food 3. Moves with a purpose 4. Responds to danger and/ or attacks prey 5. Breathes air or water 6. Water 7. DNA If the object doesn't have these characteristics then it isn't living. This information is what we learned in a lab in class. Article posted October 29, 2013 at 04:49 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 59

The food chain is necessary to all living things in order to survive.it starts with producers which are the plants they make there own food.Next comes the herbivores those are the animals that eat the plants.then there's carnivores these are the animals that eat the herbivores but some carnivores such as the killer wake eat other carnivores. The scavengers such as the fox or hyena they eat the scaps or the leftover carcass of the carnivore. D.O.(disolve oxengen):It helps fish and other living organisms in the water. If the levels too high or too low it might be polluted. PH: PH stands for positive hidgrogen it`s good if the positive hidrogen levels are low if it`s too high then the water might be polluted. Nritrates: nitrates are molcules that are one part nigrogon and three parts oxengen 75% of our air is nitrates it`s also good for the water quality too but at lease over 0.2 if it1s over it`s bad. Turbidty: turbidity shows how murky the water is. if it`s too murky than the water has alot of dirt, sand, and all other stuff in the water. the murkier it is the more pollutated the water is; it`s best if it`s clear. Ammonia: Ammonia is a clear colorless foul smelling substance that can kill all the liveing things in the water wich is bad. If it`s levels are 0.6 or 0.8 then it will cause all the fish will die. Flow Rate: Flow Rate is to find out how fast the water is in creeks. it`s best if the flow rate is slow because if the water is ruuning fast then the baby fishies will have a difficlt time swimming up the stream and the could die. Temperture: temperture or temp. for short. I`ts to tell how warm the water is. The fish like salmon and trout perfer cold water. if ot`s warmer then they could die. the average temperture is 27 degrees c ( 31.13 degrees f) Now you know how we figure out if the water is polluted or not. :-) Article posted February 29, 2012 at 09:31 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1234

Water Quatlity is all the stuff thats in the water and water quality jobs is when you test the water to see if it`s polluted or bad for fish. My water quality job is Temp.(temperture) like if it`s too hot the eggs in the water is not gonna hach and if it`s too cold the eggs will freeze. Ether way the egg would die. Also fish need a different Temp. because there cold blooded(that means there body temperture changes to the same temp. to the habitat.) most fish like salmon will want cold water. And because of global warming the temperture of the water is riseing not just the land. Remember 75% of the earth is water and 1% is drinkable and use for everyday chores. So please take care of our planets water and please don`t drink the water if it`s not clean trust me. Article posted February 28, 2012 at 09:19 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1146

It all starts when it gets warm and water turns into gas that you cant see this is called evaporation and thats why there are clouds wich is a group of water vapor. Another way that water evaporates is when water from plants comes out of leaves and into vapor this is called transporation. then when the clouds get hevy it rains this is called precipitation. then it starts all over again.
