Series.
3 Batteries.
Nail.
2 Wires.
Short String/Distance.
Motor.
The reason i wrote this is because, we are doing an experiment with all these things in science! The experiment is to see how many washers a motor/pulley can pull up! My groups motor/pulley pulled up 9 washers! Do you think it could pull up more than 9??

The force of friction

Article posted May 14, 2012 at 08:21 PM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 864

Controlled variables are measured by,
How far we pulled the blocks
How fast we pulled the blocks
The surface type
Manipulated variables are measured by
Surface type
Weight

Surface area I learned that different surface types make more/less friction, they don't all have the same friction measurement.
I learned that the more weight on a surface type will make more friction because it is heavier.
I learned that if you put more surface area on a surface type the friction stays almost same!

When you pull a block across why does it measure friction?
It measures friction because when you pull a block across a surface area the friction goes the opposite way!

Persausive blog about having cell phones in school!

Article posted May 4, 2012 at 08:21 PM GMT • comment • Reads 968

I think we should be aloud to text in class when we have nothing else to do instead of just sitting there! I think this because most teachers let us listen to music, but then they say we can't use our phones! I don't think phones are any more distracting then an iPod because you can still txt on an iPod and listen to music! If anything iPods are more distracting then phones(now im not saying to take away or iPod privilages!) If there was a time when some one had there phone out when they weren't supposed to the teachers could just take it away or tell them to put it away! Its that simple! Thats why i think we should be able to have phones in class!:)

I learned that rubber bands are really stretchy and and strong. Also that gravity pulls down Gothenburg center of the earth! Mass is what something is made of and gravity is how much it weighs.

Energy

Article posted April 17, 2012 at 08:22 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 1088

I learned That we used more energy in 2010 then we did in the 1930's! And that is a lot!! Insalation consevers energy by keeping heat inside of something so you don't have to heat up the house so much. Some things I learned about being safe with energy is that if you don't have it plugged in all the way it is much easier to catch fire. Fuels that put less carbon into our atmosphere is cars, houses, and trees are the best because they take carbon out of the air.

I learned that energy is used for a lot of things!! Energy is used all day! It charges phones, batteries, cars, and much more!! Even if your phone charger car charger(etc.) is plugged in but the other end isn't charging anything energy just runs out and you are wasting energy!!:( that's not good.

pH
Acitic= Anything lower than 7 in the pH scale. What is this years average pH? Around 6. What does that mean about our pH? It means we have great pH!!
pH means: positive hydrogen.

Turbidity
Nephelometic turbidity units= NTU
0-50's NTU= good turbidity.
100 NTU's- fish suffer stress.
1,000 NTU's- fish die in days.
This years average for turbidity is 24.7. What does that mean about our creeks turbidity levels? It means that our creek is doing pretty good in turbidity.

Nitrates.
What's this years average for Nitrates? Out creeks average for Nitrates is 0.3. That means our creek is doing really good!

Ammonium.
Levels that reach 0.06 mg/L fish will suffer gill damage. 0.02 mg/L sensitive fish like Trout and Salmon begin to die. Near 2.0 mg/L even ammonia-tolerant die. Ammonia levels greater than aproxamentaly 0.1 mg/L usually indicate polluted waters. This years average for ammonium is 1.6. The average for this year is really bad for our creek! Ammonium is NOT good for our creek.

Flow rate.
This years average for flow rate is 1972.8. It means it's good! We can tell because the fish and bugs are still living.

Temperature.
This years average for temperature is 37.1 and for the air is 44.4. It means our creek is doing pretty good. How did the water temperature compare to the air temperature this year? The air is 44.7 and the water is 37.1. They are much alike! They are both pretty good!:)

EGGS
The life cycle of the wild salmon begins with the female salmon digging out a shallow redd, or nest, in the gravel on the river bottom. After eggs are fertilized by the male, the female covers the eggs with small to pebble sized gravel. Gravel covering allows water to flow around the eggs and keep them healthy.

Redds are fragile and can easily be destroyed by people or animals crossing the shallow river or by dirt being washed or knocked into the water and smothering the eggs.

Salmon eggs need cool, clean Water to survive. Trees and plants along the side of the river provide shade which keeps the water temperature cool enough for the salmon eggs. Trees and plants also prevent soil erosion which will sometimes smother the eggs.

ALEVIN
The eggs are laid in the fall and hatch the next spring. The small larval fish, about one inch in length are called Alevin and still have a yolk sac attached. The yolk sac contains protein, sugar, minerals, and vitamins. The Alevin live on this "lunch bag" for a month or so before emerging from the gravel and beginning to hunt for food themselves. When the Alevin completely absorbs their yolk sacs, if they leave the gravel before their yolk sac is completely absorbed they are commonly called button-up fry.

Alevin need cold running water that is rich in oxygen and clean gravel that has spaces where the Alevin can hide. Threats include predators in the water, siltation, pollution and floods or other activities that can disturb the gravel can be very harmful, so people can protect the Alevin by keeping dirt or other pollutants out of the water and by staying out of the gravel!

FRY
The young salmon fry begin to move in schools and feed in the river. They feed mainly on zooplankton until they grow large enough to eat aquatic insects and other larger foods. Some species of salmon fry, such as chum and pink, start downstream toward the ocean immediately after emerging from the redd; others stay in fresh water for up to three years. Land-locked salmon, such as Kokanee, never migrate to the sea but live their entire lives in fresh water. Loss Riparian habitat along streams, rivers, estuaries, and bays is one of the most serious dangers to the wild salmons survival.

SMOLT
As the salmon parr begin migrating toward the sea, they will, they will begin the smoltification process. The smoltification process refers to The changes that take place in salmon as they prepare to enter the sea. These changes include the development of the silver color of adults and the tolerance for salt water.

LIFE IN THE SEA
The salmon will feed and grow in the sea for the next one to eight year. They will remain in the sea until they reach full maturity. The salmon will also remain silver color until they return to their home stream.

JOURNEY UPSTREAM
Once the salmon start upstream toward the spawning grounds, Tray do not feed but derive energy from stored fats. The distance salmon travel upstream to spawn varies. The average spawning trip distance is about 150 miles.

Yellow Jacket Creek VS Chimacum Creek!!!

Article posted November 4, 2011 at 09:15 PM GMT • comment (3) • Reads 1900

Yellow Jacket Ceek scored 25 and Chimacum Creek scored 21=http://!!! Thats only a 4 point difference! How we got the scores is we looked at the Benthic Macroinvertebrate Key and we would look and see if we coud find the bug on it and see what the bug is called then we would go and check off the bug on our paper. Other bugs are worth more then others like Stoneflys, Mayflies, Caddisflys, Dotsonflys are worth 4 points. Dragonflies, Cray Fishes, Riffle Beattles, Craneflies, and the Broadwing Damsel Fly are worth 3 points. Midges Sow Bugs Scuds and Black Flies are worth 2, and Flatworms, Pouch Snails, Tubifex Worms, Aquatic Worms, Blood Worms, and Leeches are worth 1 point.Chimacum Creek scores 21 for water pollution. That means that Chimacum Creek has potentially good water quallity! That is pretty good!

Water Pollution

Article posted October 18, 2011 at 09:13 PM GMT • comment (4) • Reads 2041

THE WORLD IS AT RISK!
"Water is one of the most important resources we have." (thanks to water webquest) People can survie weeks wihout eating food, but without water we would day in just a couple of days. Water is used for many sports such as swimming, boating, and fishing. Despite our dependenceon water we use it as a dumping source,nd do very very litte to protect the little water supplies we have. Water pollution ruins our lakes, rivers, and oceans! Water is called polluted when stuff like chemicals in it. Humans have the most dependence on our water resources, we also have the ability to control water pollution. When heavy metals filter into the water , it is really bad for water life. Humans are affected bt the heavy matals ingested by the fish and shellfish, causeing health problems and sometimes you die. The affects of water pollution are farreaching and affect not only the environment, but human beings and animals as well. Water pollution is stuff in the water that isn't supposed to like poop, garbage. Some sources of water pollution is farmers because they use poop and fertilizer that works it way down to the water and ships cause they can leak oil. A consequences of water pollution is fish dyeing!A thing that can be done to improve the quality of water after it has become polluted is water treatment plants. actions that can be done to help prevent water from being polluted is farmers trying to use less poop and fertilizer and people throwing trash away instead of throwing it on the ground.
