What we know about kim is that her dad is dead. Kim plants a garden without realizing it because she just wants to show her dad that she can plant lima bean seeds like he did.

What are her reasons for planting lima bean seeds?
Her dad died when she was 8 months old. She wanted to show him she was his daughter. Kim's father had been a farmer all his life in Vietnam.

she wanted to plant lima bean seeds so could show her dad she was his daughter. He died when Kim was 8 months old. He had been a farmer all his life in Vietnam.
