sacramento gigantic flood
In the 1800`s Sacramento had a tendency to flood. If someone had a house with only one level the owner of the house would be stranded on their roof; if a citizen had a house with two floors you would have to stay on your second floor while your first floor was under water.
Sometimes citizens would have to stay on the roof until the flood passed. A report says that at times people would sleep on the roof, eat on the roof, call to one another from the roof and a couple even got married on the roof.
During one of the storms, it rained for 30 straight days. After the storm, Sacramento was still completely flooded and people had to get around the town in boats, avoiding debris. The reason for this gigantic flood is that Sacramento was near the Sacramento River, and it kept flooding until the whole city was lifted. They would use jacks to raise the buildings to allow workers to put dirt under it to raise it from the original level to keep floods from occurring so often or becoming very severe. The urgency of the raising was because some houses could be destroyed by a wave or just flooded. Overall the urgency of the raising was very important because if it Sacramento wasn’t lifted it would still be flooding.
