Orion is a constellation. In Greek Myths he was a great hunter who was attacked by a giant scorpion. His jeweled sword and mighty club could not penetrate the scorpions skin and were no mach against the scorpion's slashing, poisonous tail. As Orion turned to flee the scorpion stung his heel killing him instantly.

Ok here is the truth I didn't tell you about everyone in my family. I do have a mother, a father, and a gray cat. I also have a brother, a black cat, a turtle, and a fish.

Swimming is a sport that can get very competitive. I swim but I don't compete; I just have fun and dive into the depths of the water.

Old Sacramento

When I went on a field trip to Old Sacramento we learned about how it flooded frequently in Old Sacramento and what the people did to stop it. When some settlers came they built Sacramento, but it flooded too much so they built a levee. However, when another flood came the levee worked, but it kept the rain water in the city instead of out. So the police got together a group of chainmen, and they busted the levee. Since the levee didn’t work they decided to “move” the city.
First they changed the river route. Then they literally raised the city. Many stores and homes were raised, but some could not afford it. One of the buildings was knocked over in a strong wind while it was being raised. For the homes and stores that could not be raised, their first floors simply became their basements and their second floors became their first floors. However, not all the streets and sidewalks were successfully filled in. Some people were fined or sent to jail for not filling in their sidewalks. Even one of the Big Four had been fined. Alleyways were never filled in. Most of the sidewalks, however were filled in as well as the streets. So as you can see, floods had a huge impact on Sacramento.

I think that the author, Marden Dahlstedt, of The Terrible Wave put way too much description into her book. I think that the quote, “A piano drifted beside her, its white keys looking like a great grinning mouth,’’ had good vocabulary. But some sentences have too much or not enough vocabulary. Some sentences such as “ . . . linens flapped like eerie white birds . . . ’’ is a little too descriptive for clothes because an eerie white bird and a cloth does not connect, or at least in my opinion. Anyway this book has way too much description for me.

What I Think...

I think that the most important part of California’s history was the Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma. Without this event, California wouldn’t have all of the history California has today and all of the historical monuments.
Americans first started coming to California for opportunity and wealth. One of the Americans who came to California was John C. Fremont. He took part in multiple events during the Bear Flag Revolt. In fact he encouraged Bear Flag Revolt.
When Fremont first came to California he met Colonel Jose Castro in Monterey. Castro ordered Fremont out of California because Fremont was mapping California’s land and Castro was worried that Fremont was planning an attack on California’s government. To do that Fremont encouraged a group of about 30 settlers to revolt. The settlers captured and held General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo prisoner with orders from Fremont. That was because Vallejo held a fort in Sonoma. After that they took the next step of raising a flag over Sonoma. They declared California independent from Mexico.
But they didn’t know that another war was already going on for almost the same reason. The United States wanted to stretch from coast to coast, so they would have more land and more safe harbors.
