Fourth Grade with Mr. LaMarr
Mr. LaMarr is the best teacher in the world in my opinion. We read some books such as By the Great Horn Spoon, The Cay, Number the Stars, and The Phantom Tollbooth. We recently went to Westminster Woods and had a lot of fun there. The naturalist, our guides, were great. There was a huge cargo net that a lot of people went on and played with Mr. LaMarr. There were hikes that went up a peak. There were all kinds of trees and redwoods there. In social studies we learn about a lot of cool stuff such as Japanese Internment, the Gold Rush, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, and much more. Mr. LaMarr has a great sense of humor and comes up with very funny jokes. Every day I get up out of my bed happy because I have school that day with my awesome teacher. The math we learn is a year above our grade level! It is hard but sometimes a lot of fun to learn. The year is ending, and I will really miss Mr. LaMarr.

Sacramento’s History
The Pony Express (Pony Bob)
The Pony Express changed California’s transportation a lot. There was a rider who rode a horse carrying a message that was Abraham Lincoln’s message.
His nickname was “Pony Bob”. Indians attacked him when he was in Indian territory. He had an arrow stuck into him. Once he got to the next station the arrow was removed. This whole process of delivering the letter took seven days, with some stops here and there.
Then the telegraph came into business. The next day after that, the Pony Express was shut down. The Pony Express was shut down because it was expensive, but the telegraph was cheaper and faster.

Leafy, green, magnificent

Redwoods
Beautiful and amazing
Climbing, growing and dieing
Setting an example

Cabins
Smelly, big, cold

Stringy, thick, paunchy

The Scat
Like a watery pool
Like a stinky sock
Like a melted chocolate bar
Like a disgusting monster
Like a decomposing candy bar
Like a chunky jug of chocolate milk
Like a bad friend
The Colorful Tide Pool
Like a shiny abalone shell
Like a rocky path
Like a shiny wet cave
Like a beautiful fast fish
Like a slippery seaweed path
Like a shiny rock crab

I love the writing of Marden Dahlstedt in The Terrible Wave so far. She describes the scene of the wave destroying everything in its path very well. She uses lots and lots of descriptive adjectives. The book has lots of detail in all of the chapters. An example of Marden Dahlstedt putting lots of detail in the book is this passage from the book, when the wave hit Megan’s house, “All Megan could see was a sinister black mist.” That sentence has lots of detail because she was describing the mist as something terrible. When the wave hit Johnstown, Marden Dahlstedt was putting so much detail in that part of the book.
Megan was very scared and Marden Dahlstedt was very descriptive of Megan’s emotions when she was on the soggy mattress crying and sobbing for someone nice enough to try to save her. When Megan saw someone sitting on a house and asked if he could help her, all he did was say no. Then Megan burst into tears and called the man a mean old man.
I like that Marden Dahlstedt puts times in every chapter so you know when everything is happening. Like on chapter 11 the time is 10:15 A.M on Saturday, June 1, 1889. She puts lots of action and climaxes in the book. When the wave hit Megan Maxwell’s house she was writing lots and lots of detail so the reader could understand what is going on without a picture.

California’s History
I think the most important part of California’s History is the crossing of the land bridge. Nearly 40,000 years ago Native Americans crossed the land bridge to get to California. They carried things that could fit on a sack on their back. The Natives hunted and followed the animal to kill it for the meat. They did that so they would not starve to death. They settled California and formed tribes.
Then the explorers came to California to explore and left. More and more explorers started coming to California because they heard of the other explorers going to California. Then all the explorers never came back to California again because the countries that explored weren’t interested in the land.
Then the Spanish people started coming to California. They settled California and built missions. They went to the tribes of Indians and took the Indians with them to work at the missions. They were taught the catholic religion and lived at the missions. Then the missions got shut down after the Mexican government decided to shut the missions down.
The people of California no longer wanted to be a part of Mexico so they started a revolt. This revolt was called the Bear Flag Revolt. They had a war, and the Californio’s surrendered and signed a treaty called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. These things made the United States gain four full states and parts of others. One of them was California! If it wasn’t for the Bear Flag Revolt and the War with Mexico, California still might be a part of Mexico.
