Disaster in the Old Town

Article posted May 22, 2012 at 05:27 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1260

The people who lived in Sacramento were almost always in danger. These disasters were floods and fires.
Since Sacramento was near the river, and on the same level, floods were not rare. In fact they were common. When it rained, the water would overflow, and it would work its way through the town. The first few times it happened, they were worried, but soon enough, they became used to it, although they were still scared. This problem was fixed by “raising the city.” I know what you’re thinking, “THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!” Almost everyone thought that, when the proclamation was announced, except for the planners. But they worked hard, and sure enough, the city was raised 12 feet, but it took 14 years to do this task, and it was successful.

This fixed the problem because the water rushing through the town couldn’t get up hill. Sacramento is now a “Flood Free Town.” Sacramento is declared “safe!”

Westminster Woods
Poetry

My class and I went to Westminster Woods for a field trip. We had such a good time, and it was so beautiful, that we decided to write some poetry. So, here is MY poetry, which was based on our trip.

Tide Pool Fun

Tide pools
A star in the sky,
Rushing wind,
Pool of white,
Awesome delight,
Flowing bunch of rivers that come together to hold the Powerful animals that they hold

Crab
Purple, porcelain, small
Crab

Abalone
Colorful, shelled,
Creeping, crawling, sticking to,
Still shelled animals crawling slowly over the rocks,
Abalone

Sea Star
Colorful, spikey, rough,
Sucking, eating, feeling tentacles,
Shy bottom feeder,
Fish

Armstrong Redwoods

REDWOOD
LIKE GNARLED TREES, EVERYWHERE,
ALMOST AS TALL AS THE CLOUDS,
LIKE A CHAIR WAITING TO BE SAT ON,
LIKE ON A MISTY COLD DAY,
LIKE IN A DARK RAINFOREST,
LIKE A MEANT TO BE NATURAL LADDER.

SUN
BRIGHT, LIGHT, BALL OF FIRE,
SUN

Night hike

Moon
Bright, milky,
Brightening, gazing, blazing,
Gives light at night,
sun

Stream
Rolling, ball of energy,
Through a river, back to a Ocean,
Water

A Tree House,
A tree house,
Kids on the cargo net,
Misty, fast, wind
Fresh air
Sharp jagged edges, as I climb the rocky mountains,

What I Think of Marden Dahlstedt

Article posted January 31, 2012 at 06:26 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 120

In the book The Terrible Wave, by Marden Dahlstedt, I realized I like her writing when she became so descriptive about everyone and everything. An example is when, Megan, a main character, Tom, another character, and Brian, another main character, are hanging on for life on a raft, in the middle of a stream of flood water, about to fall, and Daisy calls them a pig in a mud wallow, and “ . . . anger flashed through Megan, hot and fierce.” I like it because it is descriptive; I thought it was so weird because it was a life or death situation and Daisy was laughing!
I also like Dahlstedt’s writing when she writes about the new characters, so nice and neat, and at the right time. When she wrote about Brian, a main character and protagonist in this book,“ A wet, dark head appeared sleek as a seal, and then the rest of the sizable body followed…” I like it because it tells what the new character looks like as she is introducing him.

The amount of description in The Terrible Wave is too much for most anyone to explain. For most people, that is a good thing, especially me.

California's History

Article posted December 9, 2011 at 08:59 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1568

California’s History
I think that the most important event, of the Bear Revolt, is how and when California got claimed to be part of the United States. The United States gained California when the Bear Flag Revolt and the War with Mexico occurred. It was important because it is known that the United States and the Bear Flag Rebels were the ones that helped the most to claim California for the United States.

I think that the event that created the most change was the War with Mexico. I think it is the War with Mexico because it was that war that let California break free from Mexico. California then came into the United State’s ownership.
