their petals unfold
like the shy turning bold
their bright, vibrant color
makes everything else look duller
their silky feeling
makes them appealing
in the winter they yearn to thrive
and to be more alive
then they sway in the warm breeze
their serenity could put anyone at ease

their fiery breath billows
burning it all to ashes
not caring whether they're friends or foes
even as her valiant sword slashes
the dancing flame never slows

Stars

I gaze up at the starry sky

Each twinkling light entirely its own

Pure individuals, none of them shy

Different but the same, together but alone

Water (Poem)

Article posted April 27, 2012 at 03:31 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 249

Water
It splashes against my cheek as I stand on the dock
I tune in my ears to the pattern as my friends talk
It beats to a rhythm only nature could create
It’s language is old and wise, like it knows my fate
Every time a wave crashes to a halt on the sandy shore
Another wave takes it’s place, stronger than before
I watch the water rise and fall like a heart beat
The taste of the rain on my tongue cool and sweet
The wind of the storm whistles past my ears
I stand and watch as the storm disappears

Poems

Haikus

Wild Horses
Wild, free, untamed
Their hooves dance upon the ground
Manes stream behind them

Boats
Are transportation
With engine or sail, they ride
The waves carry them

Ocean
Water sprays my face
Waves crash upon the shoreline
A salt smell lingers

Fairies
Pink gossamer wings
Flower caps upon their heads
They flit and fly ‘round

Limericks

There once was a scaly green creature
He lived under the bleachers
His daily routine
Was having caffeine
What you don’t know; he’s my teacher

The blue little ball could fly
Up in the sky so high
He didn’t enjoy
Being a toy
So he decided to become a spy

I'm Thankful For...

Article posted November 22, 2011 at 03:59 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 283

I’m thankful for… By Hannah
 The smell of wet wool after a face-plant in a snow bank
 Laughing with my friends over really stupid jokes
 The sand between my toes when I’m at the beach
 The saucy taste of lasagna
 The thrill of zooming down a hill on skis
 The taste of slightly melted, Hersheys Milk chocolate
 Having big snowball fights after the first snow
 Lying on my bed reading really good books
 The three hours where the light shining through my window is bright and perfect
 Eating pizza at a sleep over while our mittens are drying in front of the fireplace
 Making snow angels in a snow bank, not caring that my jeans are totally soaked
 Riding my bike in the summer
 Attempting to play tennis with my brother
 Having kickball tournaments after school
 The smell of campfires that stained my sweatshirt
 Having to clear grass and dirt out of my soccer cleats
 A wet alarm clock (my dog hops onto my bed and licks me whenever he can
 Sitting on a rock in my sleeping bag looking up at the stars or playing Farkle or Uno in the Boundary Waters
 Being able to have fun with my soccer team while we’re on the bench

Portion Plate Essay

Article posted November 9, 2011 at 07:38 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 256

Did you know over 25 million American kids are overweight? That’s a lot of people and with so many kids obese, the chance of kids getting cancer or type 2 diabetes has gone up. 25 million is 33.6 % of all the kids and teens from ages 2-19, everywhere. It’s the highest percentage ever surveyed, up from 28.2 % in 2000. Do you know why? It’s because of all the fatty and processed foods that are being made and eaten. They can be addicting. Ever opened a bag of potato chips, planning only to eat a handful or two but then couldn’t stop? That’s what I mean. But you can help reduce that percentage; simply try to do some of the things that will be mentioned in this article like eating healthy and playing outside. And if you already do these things, great!
Food
First of all, you can try not to have greasy or fatty foods in your meals. Or empty calories. Empty calories are unhealthy. They contain practically no nutrition. They are also in a lot of foods. Though they may be good, that would probably be the only reason to eat them, for pleasure. They only give us fat to carry around and then later have to burn off. You can drink fruit juice, milk or water instead of soda. Your meals should be one half fruits and veggies, one fourth whole grains and one fourth protein. An example of a healthy meal would be maybe beans and rice with broccoli, an orange and a glass of milk. An unhealthy meal might be a McDonalds Big Mac, with chicken tenders, a cookie and soda. Fast food like Big Macs is O.K every once and a while, but not with two fatty main courses! And restraint meals tend to be higher in fat and sodium then home-made meals. Although you can do things like ask for lettuce and/or tomato with your sandwich when you eat out.
Exercise
Put down those video game controls and go outside to play! Another reason for children’s obesity is too little exercise. Why? Because this new-found technology keeps kid’s eyes glued to the screen. But glue can be undone! Now I know the TV isn’t always the case, and don’t get me wrong, computers are great and everybody likes watching TV every once and a while, but it’s those addicting game systems that people play for hours on end when they can be outside. Kids should spend about an hour a day or more playing outside or being active. Some people like to call it play60, as in play for 60 minutes (an hour) outside per day. Exercise (or lack of it) definitely has a play in your weight.

I hope you learned a little something from this article and I hope you use the tips given!

Forestry Field Day

Article posted October 12, 2011 at 06:43 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 217

Forestry field day was cool. We learned about dirt and trees and nature, but my favorites were lunch and firefighting. I know lunch isn’t really a subject, but it just felt good to bask in the sun, talk and eat. I liked firefighting because he made it really interesting and fun. I thought it was cool when we got to spray the water pump. When we learned about the equipment, it was surprising, what they wore to protect themselves. I also enjoyed it when we sat down to record observations. I had this nice little spot between two tree roots and where the sun was just right. Right before that we learned about pinecones with Mr. Monson instead of going to the class, which was great. But I liked everything, wildlife, dirt, trees, and the sawmill, it was all super fun!

Hopes & Dreams…

Article posted October 12, 2011 at 06:33 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 229

I hope to improve my writing skills. I will accomplish this by finding out authors strategies.

My goal is to expand my vocabulary. I will do this by looking up a word in the dictionary, and if that’s unclear then ask a person. And then use that word in a sentence at least twice.

I hope to learn about Europe. I will do this by studying its history.

My hope and dream is to learn more advanced math, pre-algebra, and more about cube and square roots. I will do this by asking an adult to help me, and then using their advice.

I hope to learn more about diseases and how people get them. I will do this by studying them on the computer and checking books out on them from the library.

I wish to learn about history, and people’s ancestors. I will do this by reading historic fiction and books that make learning about history fun.

I hope to read at least fifty books by the end of the school year. I will accomplish this by keeping a list and reading a lot.

I hope to make new friends. I will do this by being friendly to everybody.

I wish to learn about exotic animals. I will do this by reading books about them and learning about them on the computer.

My goal is to learn about historic kings and their decisions. I will accomplish this by searching them on the computer.

I wish to be in a play this year. I will do this by signing up.
