What day is it??
Since leaving my home in Sweden, I have sometimes regretted going to Oregon. I really doubt we’re gonna' make it. There have been many things on the trail that were bad, but our wagon train dealt with it. Minnie lost her husband and her supplies. My husband got bit by a rattle snake and I lost most of my animals. Some good things also happened! Clarence and Christina got married, and they are about to have a little baby child. We lost a lot of water and then it rained so much we had too much water. A lot of different things happened a long the trail.
Many memorable things happened along the trail. As you know, Christina and Clarence got married and are about to have a baby. Also Marie just gave birth to her little baby. It’s such a wonderful sight to see her baby playing and laughing. She is the cutest thing. Oh, now I remember, Clarence and Christina just got his ring like five minutes ago! I don’t really have a good memory!
My wagon train and I decided to go off the path and around the mountains and trees and into Hacker’s Valley. Marie didn’t agree, but she signed it! So, HA Marie! I usually get my way with decisions, but I’m not really so sure about our decision anymore. Fate is making me pretty nervous about our decision. Fate acts like we’re gonna' die, and when I think about it I think we might! I really do hope we don’t die! Maybe I should’ve done what Irene Brown convinced her wagon to do which is stay in Paradise. Well, I guess we won’t know who’s right until Oregon!
I expect we will die because of Fate! Thanks a lot Fate! Fate has made me so nervous about our decision. Then again, if we get to Oregon I can tell Fate that I was right! Even though I believe Fate more than I believe that we will get to Oregon. I hope that we get to Oregon so my animals can eat the lush green grass and drink the sweet water. I hope that we can build a house made out of wood that is warm and cozy for the winter.
My advice for future pioneers is always go on the safe trails because you always know you will be safe. Whatever or not you do, don’t use weapons for everything because it usually ends up bad. Try to escape as many fates as you can because usually they are bad! Remember I said usually the fates are bad. That doesn’t mean always. Remember your wagon members may not always be nice, and you should try to get along with them because you are stuck with them until Oregon! I hope you survive, future pioneer!
I do hope we get to Oregon, but I seriously doubt it!
Best Wishes,
Laura Swanson

Pluto
Pluto is one of the most interesting planets I know. Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. In 2006, Pluto was considered a dwarf planet, and it was considered the 9th planet in our solar system. Did you know that there is a probe expected to fly to Pluto in 2015? Pluto is a dwarf planet as you know, but there are also many other dwarf planets like Pluto. Their names are Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, Eris. Ceres was discovered in 1801 and considered the largest asteroid. Eris is the same size as Pluto and it is considered the 10th planet. Pluto is light brown with dark brown swirly stripes. It is composed of rock and ice and is covered with frozen methane. It also has a small atmosphere of nitrogen. Here are some other facts about Pluto: Its diameter is 1,460 miles. The temperature is probably 385 degrees. Pluto’s distance from the sun is 3,670,050,000. As you can see Pluto is a very important part in our solar system.

Favorite Things Parody
Buggers on noses
and wrinkles on kittens
Dull Wobble kettles
and fat paper mittens
Puke paper packages
tied up with green
These are a few of my favorite things
Cream colored chickens
and crisp apple poodles
Doorbells and death bells
and fat pigs with noodles
Wild geese that fly with their poop on their beaks
These are a few of my favorite things
Boys in pink dresses
with beige satin sashes
Throw up that stays on my neck and eyelashes
Silver white pickles
that melt into pink
These are a few of my favorite things
When the cat purrs,
When my legs itch,
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad

“The Other Side” is about an African American girl named Clover who lives on the other side of a fence. On the other side of the fence live all the white people and a little girl named Annie. Annie always sits on her side of the fence and watches the other side of it. One day Annie asks to play with Clover but before Clover can say anything her friend Sandra says no. A couple of days later, Clover went up to Annie and started sitting on the fence with her. They sat on the fence all through summer. One day when Clover and Annie asked to play jump rope with Sandra she says, “I don’t care,” so Clover, Annie, and Sandra all play jump rope together.
I think “The Other Side” is really a story about courage. Annie has courage to ask Clover and Sandra to play jump rope. Clover had courage to watch Annie play in the rain even though her mom would get mad if she saw Clover staring at Annie. Clover had courage to sit on the fence with Annie not knowing if she was allowed to. In this story it mostly teaches you to have courage and never give up.
When I thought about “The Other Side” even more it connected to my life because of the courage in the story. It reminded me when I had a lesson on a horse named Diva that I hadn't ridden since I fell off of her. I was really nervous because the last time I really hurt my back, but I had courage to get back on. In the story Clover had courage to sit on the fence even though she wasn’t supposed to. We both had courage to do things, and that’s why I connected to the story “The Other Side.”
No matter what people say, you should always have courage and never give up!

Born this Way Remix
I know what famous is with capital “FAMOUS”
My daddy told me when I was old
We are all famous
He held my hand and he put his mascara on
In the bathroom of our house
That shows that there’s nothing wrong with being old ohh ohh
He said 'cause you’re not famous yet
So put your hand up and I’ll reach up high
Listen to me when I speak
I’m famous in my own way
And my dad makes so many mistakes
I’m on the wrong track baby
I am famous this way
Hide yourself in regret
Just be famous and you're set
I’m on the wrong track baby
I am famous this way, famous this way
Ooh, there ain’t no other way baby I am famous this way
Baby I was famous this way
Ohh there ain’t no other way baby I am famous this way
I’m on the right track baby I am famous this way
Don’t be a drag just be famous
Don’t be a drag just be famous
Don’t be a drag just be famous
Don’t be
We are famous this way

Ledef’s Bad Day (Ledef is French.)
One day I was playing around on my bike. I was doing swirlies, and a car with its window open passed. I did a big swerve and than went flying through the window into the car and landed on the driver.
One day I was playing tag, and I was it. I couldn’t get anyone so I got on my bike and chased them like that but I still couldn’t get anyone.
One day I was playing hide and seek with my pet goldfish. I couldn’t find him so I ran into the wall. My nose started bleeding and dripped into the fish bowl.

How to Make a Dog Face
1.Draw a stick figure with no arms.
2.Draw 4 dots on each side of the body.
3.Draw a circle around the stick figure and dots.
4.Draw a half circle on top of the circle.
5.Draw eyes on both side of half circle.
6.Draw floppy ears on each side.
Here is the story that helps you make a dog face.
There is a guy at his country club. Bees are around him. He jumps into the pool. Then he goes in a cave. There are lots of rocks in the cave. There are two paths.
Now you have a dog face.

My mom decided I was a really good swimmer and I should be on a swim team during the year as well as the summer. That‘s why I was sitting in the car going to the Rye YMCA for a swim tryout.
“But, mom, I don’t want to go to the tryout! I’m really nervous I won’t make it on the team,” I said biting my finger nails.
“Who cares if you don’t make it on the team,” my mom said. “The important thing is if you tried.”
“Ok,” I thought to myself. “I just have to try.” So that’s what I did.
I slid out of the car seat and started walking inside with my mom. When we got inside, my mom signed me up for the tryouts and helped me put my swim cap on. My mom isn’t very sympathetic so when I whispered, “I’m really nervous!” she whispered back, “You’ll be fine!” Like it wasn’t a big deal at all!
When it was my turn, I walked in and put my goggles on. A lady told me to stand near a lane. The lady then said,
“Hi, my name is Coach Liz, and today you’re going to do two laps of each stroke. What’s your name?”
“I’m Ava,” I said quietly.
“Ok Ava,” she said. “Well, dive in!”
I didn’t have to be told twice. I did my best dive and started swimming freestyle. Freestyle is my best stroke, so I didn’t have a problem with those two laps. Backstroke I was OK with, but I was definitely slower than Freestyle. Breaststroke I’m really good at, too, so that was easy. My last two laps were Butterfly which I hate and was really bad at! But I tried my best and eventually got through it.
“Remember, Ava, this Saturday your mom will get an email if you are on the team or not,” said Coach Liz. I nodded, and got out of the pool and walked to my mom.
“How did you do?” my mom asked
“Ok, I guess, except for Butterfly!” I said, and then I walked to the locker room. I took a warm shower, got changed and went home.
I woke up early Saturday morning and raced down the stairs to the computer. I was so excited because today my mom would get and email if I made the team or not. I went onto my mom’s email and clicked the email from the team. It said, "Congratulations! Ava is on the Rye Wave Ryder’s swim team!"
I screamed, “OMG! Mom I’m on the swim team!”
I was so happy, and I learned all you have to do is try!

Cleany Weenie
By Horsebackrider1
Cleany Weenie is a fearless hotdog superhero who teaches the world not to litter. Her two trusty sidekicks who travel with her are Kim Ketchup and Molly Mustard.
Cleany Weenie’s special weapon is her bun attack which she uses to trap unsuspecting litter bugs. Kim and Molly are able to squirt the litterer and they all help to make sure the earth is clean!
One bright sunny day Cleany was walking along the street to go to her favorite breakfast place when she saw someone sucking on a lollipop. At first she thought who would be having a lollipop at 8 o’clock in the morning. She got upset and angry when the person dropped the wrapper on the ground! Cleany thought, "I’m going to go talk some sense into that guy!"
She went up to him and told him that he shouldn’t be throwing the wrapper on the ground.
He said, “This is a free country, wiener, and I can do what I want.”
Cleany went into action with her HOTDOG BUN ATTACK! Cleany spun around really fast and her bun went flying off her body and caught the litter bug. Kim and Molly squirted him until his mouth was full of ketchup and mustard and he could no longer speak.
The litter bug mumbled, “What did I do to deserve this?”
Cleany told the litter bug, "You have no right to be throwing trash on the ground and you will get squeezed in here until you understand."
With that she and her buddies left to look for more litterers.
As they continued walking down the street they spotted another person who was littering. He threw his hamburger wrapper on the ground! Cleany went up to this man and told him that he shouldn’t be throwing trash on the ground. Unfortunately this man didn’t listen either and just turned his back on Cleany. Now it was time again for HOTDOG BUN ATTACK! Cleany had just finished spinning her new bun and she spun it and grabbed the second litter bug.
Kim and Molly began squirting and Cleany started lecturing. “You have no right to litter. In fact, it is a law that you can’t litter. If everybody threw their trash on the ground every day we would be walking in garbage instead of on the sidewalk. We would be driving in garbage instead of on the street! And our houses would be full of garbage!"
Cleany finished her speech and asked, “Do you understand why it’s not good to litter now?”
The two litter bugs nodded their heads and promised not to litter again. The buns opened and allowed them to be free.
Cleany Weenie is a litter fighting superhero, who with the help of her buns is able to prevent littering. Cleany is a great hotdog and along with her two best friends, Kim and Molly, they are able to save the world from trash!

A Horse Wish
By Horsebackrider1
When I was little, I always dreamed of riding horses. I would always ask my parents if I could ride some day. They would say, “No, sweetie, you’re too little,” and I would feel very disappointed.
Finally the time had come. I had turned six, and I was now old enough to ride. It was a wonderful autumn Friday, and I was going to a horseback riding stable. I was so excited I was practically bouncing off the walls.
While we were driving my mom said, “The stable is called Boulder Brook. OK, sweetie?”
“Sure mom,” I said without even thinking about it.
When we got there we walked into the office and my mom talked with the owner of the barn. The owner told me I was riding a horse called Hohum, and my teacher would be Sarah. As we walked to Hohum’s stall, I thought now that’s a funny name!
When we got to Hohum’s stall my mom said to the groom, “Can you help us? We need Hohum in the ring with Sarah.”
“Sure”, he said.
Once we were in the ring I got on Hohum, and I put my feet in the stirrups. Then Sarah came over and put Hohum on a rope.
She said, “Hi, I’m Sarah, what’s your name?”
“I’m Ava,” I said.
“We are going to start by walking around, so give Hohum a kick.”
I gave him a kick and he started walking around.
After about fifteen minutes of exercises, Sarah said, “Now we are going to trot so give Hohum another kick.”
I kicked him and he started trotting.
Then Sarah said, “Now stand up in your stirrups and sit back down over and over.”
I did exactly what she said and after about fifteen minutes I started getting the hang of it.
When I was done I got off and told my mom that I really wanted to continue riding and after a couple of pleases, she said “Yes!”
My wish came true, and I have been riding horses ever since. Whenever I feel sad I find being in the horse barn makes me feel better. Just smelling the mix of grain, manure and flies somehow does the trick! I am ten years old now and learning to compete in horse shows so I know wishes do come true.

The Swimming Song
We love to swim,
Freestyle and Breaststroke,
Because we have a swimming pool,
And we’re on a swim team,
We help with lane lines,
That’s why we wrote,
This beautiful song!

Favorite Class: My favorite class is science because I love doing fun experiments and trying to figure out how things work. My favorite science project was in 3rd grade when we learned how to put together a circuit. In 4th grade I showed how heat can make three rocks into one by melting candy with the heat of my hands.
Best Teacher Ever: The best teacher I ever had was Mrs. Day in 2nd grade. She was kind, funny, and allowed me to have choice time twice on Fridays. She made the end of the week special by giving out lollipops. She taught many things, and I especially remember the nine times tables trick because of her.
Worst Smell at School: The worst smell at school was this year during a gym test for flexibility. Everybody in my class had to take their shoes off for stretching. It smelled like sweaty socks and moldy feet, and I had to hold my nose until it was over.
Best Smell at School: The best smell at school happened after school when I made homemade raviolis with my friend Darcy and Mrs. Day. I won the teacher raffle at the International School Fair and was allowed to choose one friend to bring with me. I brought my best friend Darcy, and we stuffed and fried raviolis with Mrs. Day. When they were done we tried one and they were so good that we took all of it home for dinner.
Best Prank Ever Played: Last year our teacher Mrs. Schrank was sitting in a chair at music and I tiptoed behind her and shouted BOO! This is a Halloween prank that we do every year where we scare our teacher in Music. There is always one person picked and last year it was me. I could tell Mrs. Schrank was scared because her mouth dropped, her eyes grew big, and her eyes blinked furiously.
Best Field Trip Ever Taken: We went to BOCES this year for a team building experience with the entire 5th grade. We did fun obstacles that taught us how to work together! My favorite was the spider web obstacle. I got carried up through the tallest hole of a very large spider web by my team. I was caught on the other side by my other teammates. I felt like I was superwomen flying through the air!
Best Memory: This year when we were returning from BOCES our bus broke down on the highway. We had to walk along the highway wall like a tightrope and then we were picked up by the teachers and placed into the new bus that had gas. I’ll never forget getting stuck in that bus!

It was the first day of horseback riding camp. I was waiting impatiently to hear who I was riding that day. I saw this girl, and I remembered her from last year. So I went up to her and started talking. “Hey,” I said. ”I remember you from last year. I'sn’t your name Sam?” “Yeah,” she said,” and yours is Ava, right?” “Uh huh,”I said. We started talking about which horses we wanted to ride. After about five minutes, Mary, one of the instructors came. We all went into the green room so she could read the horse list. My name was called first. She said, “Ava you are riding Beau at 11:00 A.M. with Katie.” Yes! I thought. Everyone says Beau has a great canter! About an hour later, after tacking up Beau with my friend Charlotte, I took Beau into the ring and got on. Then I made sure my stirrups were the right length and started walking on my half of the ring. Soon Katie came in and said, “Posting trot!” Me and my group, which was Abby on Buddy, Charlotte on Maddie, and Maddie on Tyler, got a posting trot and started trotting around the ring. After thirty minutes everyone went into the middle and Abby and Charlotte went to the rail and cantered without stirrups. Then Maddie and I went to the rail. I took my feet out of the stirrups and started cantering. When Katie said to walk, I pulled on the reins and Beau got very bouncy. I found myself slipping to the left and kerplunk! I scraped my shoulder against the wall and fell. My teacher came up to me and so did Beau! My teacher said, “Ava Beau saved your leg! He jumped over it so he wouldn’t hurt you, and he was very worried!” I got up and got back on. I did it again and the next time I didn’t fall off! From that day on Beau has been one of my favorite ponies!
