The Grade One students have been very busy the past few months. We hope you enjoy this video showing us finger painting our spelling words, building our castles and practicing our animal charades. As well, we have been doing a great job researching animals. You will see us using the I-Pads to find out all kinds of cool information. We were also very fortunate to have Hanna's Grandma come and talk to us about life in Nunavut. She even brought a coat to show us how they carry their babies!! Just before Easter we put on our pink shirts to support Anti Bullying and had a great buddy activity of crafts and bingo. We hope you enjoy our video.

We finally hit a 100 days of school. The students have been counting the days since the start of the school year. Everyone had a lot of fun counting their items by 2, 5 and 10's. We also wrote 100 words, built a tower out of 100 blocks, made a puzzle, knocked down 100 dominoes and much more. In the afternoon Mr. C took the students on a 100's Day parade. To end off the day we counted out 100 raisins, cookies, chocolate chips, cheerios and fruitloops and had a snack.

We have been having alot of fun practicing counting in different ways. We are able to count by 1, 2, 5 and 10. The other day we filled cups with marshmallows, beads, paperclips and fruit loops. We predicted which cup had more. Many of us thought there would be more beads because they are smaller.

We have had a lot of fun celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas. We helped light our school tree by buying lights for a loonie, and bought candy grams to share with others. The money from both of these fundraisers went towards helping build a school for children in Haiti. We also got to put donated food and toys under our tree. We spent time with many of our friends- reading with our grade 3 buddies, listening to Mr. C read, and making Christmas ornaments with our grade 12 buddies.
Merry Christmas everyone! Wishing you all the best in 2012!

The Grade One students have been busy little inventors. To complete our unit in Science the students made a plan, sketched and then created their invention. Robots, boats, racing robots, spaceships, cleaning machines and baby bottles were created. Like all good inventors the students presented their inventions and then discussed what changes they would make to their inventions to improve it. Watch for students comments and inventions on their individual page.

In Science we have been looking at different types of materials and what they are good for. We also looked at ways to change materials- cooking, nailing, gluing, taping, stapling and coloring. These pictures show us changing materials.

In ELA, we are talking about "What Good Readers Do." We are also practicing making pictures in our head when we read. In Social we are discussing Needs and Wants. The students have done a very good job distinguishing between needs and wants and identifying ways we get our needs met. In Science we are experimenting with different materials to find out what floats, repels water, is bendable and acts as an insulator. In Math we are working on adding and subtracting as well as counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. In health we are discussing friendship and how to be a good friend.
Thank you to all the parents for attending the Student -Led Conferences. The Grade Ones were very excited and proud to show you their work. It is amazing to see their accomplishments and growth from the beginning of the year!

We had a great afternoon on Thursday. We celebrated Education Week by participating in a Buddy Activity with the Grade 12's and 9's. At 1:00 we went into the gym for a gymblast!! We raced on blankets, tried to take the socks off of our buddies and played a huge dodgeball game. After that we went back to the classroom where our buddies read to us.
