Geomandatry; A Geometry Blog by Amanda
This blog is for Miss Jovanovich's algebra and geometry classes to share ideas, ask questions, and reflect on what skills and topics we are studying. If we are lucky, we might even get a chance to connect with other students studying the same stuff.

Everyone's favorite time of year has finally come: finals week. All I can say is AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FINALS!!! To be completely honest I'm absolutely terrified for what's going to happen this week and I have all the reason to be. My classes are WAY harder than last year, and I'm doubling up on math courses so that's going to be a field day all by itself. My finals schedule goes a little like this. Algebra and AP English the first day, French and Gym the next, then American Studies and Art, and then my two hardest classes, Biology and Geometry. The good thing in this pile of bad news is that my finals week starts Wednesday. So I will have an extra weekend to study for my two hardest finals. Thank. God. Ms. J asked us to pick our favorite test question from this past semester and I think for me it had to be the question about Pac Man on our last test. We had to find the shaded area of Pac Man. My approach was finding the whole of the circle, then finding the sector not shaded, and subtracting the sector from the whole. It's a lot of plugging in and playing with numbers. My favorite. Well I guess I should start studying now. Talk to you all later!

Hi Everyone!
It has been awhile since I have blogged, and that's for many reasons. One because the site was down, and two because my computer kept throwing error messages every time I would try to blog. But thankfully today it's working. The year is finally wrapping up, and in the past few weeks we have learned a few things, things like SOH CAH TOA and many other things that have to do with triangle trig. SOH CAH TOA are three abbreviations for remembering sine opposite over hypotenuse, cosine adjacent over hypotenuse, and tangent opposite over adjacent. These three tools can help you when trying to find areas of triangles, and many other things. Other things we have learned are the laws of cosines and sines. I really like these because they're formulas, and really easy to remember, and a lot like algebra. Algebra and I are friends, geometry and I are just acquaintances. Well talk to you all later!

Hey everyone! Last week I don't really remember anything in geometry because one thing was on my mind: PROM. We had a test in Geo but that's all I really can remember. Last week was filled with crazy prom preparations but in the end, my lovely mother and I got everything done. I forgot to tell you readers, she's all better now! I know I wrote earlier that she had been sick, but three months of recovery later and she is back to her normal self. In a nutshell, it has been a crazy week. And in case you were wondering, prom was amazing. Best. Night. Ever. Talk to you all next week!

Area Formulas!

Hi everyone! This week in geometry we have been working with many area formulas. Areas for circles, quadrilaterals, and many other polygons. There are so many different formulas to remember depending on the shape but I've been getting by just fine. I swear there's an area formula for everything. Semi circle area, full circle area, part of a circle area, quadrilateral area, square area. Name ANYTHING and there's probably a formula for that. My favorite is the area formula for a rectangle or square. Base times height. Why you ask? Because it simply is the easiest formula out there. Once you get over the intimidation factor for the amount of formulas it isn't too bad. That's what math is all about, isn't it? Well talk to you all next week!

Hi Everyone!
Last week in Geometry we worked with 30,60, and 90 degree right triangles and 45, 45, 90 degree right triangles. Along with them came a ton of new rules to follow and theorems to remember and at first it was extremely intimidating. But never fear, hints and shortcuts are here! First for 30, 60, 90;
Rule #1 : The short leg is always half the hypotenuse.
Shortcut: I don't have one just because it's probably the easiest to remember.
Rule #2: The long leg is short leg times the square root of three.
Shortcut: Remember, 30 degrees. Root Three. 3 and 3. Tada!
Now for 45, 45, 90;
Rule #1: The hypotenuse is Leg times the root of 2.
Shortcut: This is easy to remember because two legs have to be the same. Two. Root Two.
Rule #2: The leg is the hypotenuse over the root of 2.
Shortcut: It's the same thing as rule #1. If you remember that, you're all set!
I hope those hints/shortcuts help! Talk to you all next week!

Pythagorean Theorem

Hi everyone! This week in geometry we have been working with the Pythagorean Theorem. Pythagoras; what a guy. He was so nice as to create this theorem in where you can calculate areas of triangles with few simple steps. How thoughtful of him. A squared plus B squared equals C squared. It really doesn't get much easier than that. The best part is, we've already learned this! The bad part is, with reteaching comes the opportune time to learn something new. I have a bad feeling that this is going to be really confusing too...I'll let you all know next week. See yah!

Reflections!

Hi everyone! This week in geometry we have been working on reflections. Ms. J started introducing us to reflections by making us recall those little plastic things you used in first grade where you drew something, looked through the plastic thing, and the something's reflection was portrayed on the other side. It also reminded me of when I was little and made butterflies by painting one side of paper and folding it over onto the other, and opening up the paper again and having a beautiful symmetrical butterfly! Good times. Reflections are very easy, so I don't think I'll have a problem with them. Talk to you all next week!

Hi everyone! These past few days in geometry we have been working on transformations. I don't know why but transformations always remind me of Transformers. That's one of my favorite movies so that's probably where I make that connection. I really like transformations, they aren't too difficult, so I feel very confident when it comes time for testing. I hope everyone's having a lovely start to spring! Talk to you next week!

Radical Radicals

Hi everyone! I'm going to make this short and sweet. Recently, there's been something following me. They're everywhere. In Algebra II, and Geometry. Radicals. EVERYWHERE! I can't seem to get away from them lately. In Geometry we've been learning how to simplify radicals. In Algebra II we've been learning how to rationalize them. I honestly have no idea how I've been keeping up with it all lately. It' s been a slow start to quarter four and I'm definitely in a Sophomore slump. Thank goodness there's only a month and a half until summer! Almost there! Well that's about it, I told you this would be short and sweet. Talk to you all next week!

Hi everyone! Today I headed down to lovely Worcester Mass to visit my darling big sister at her college, WPI. Talk about nerd school. My sister is currently studying biochemical engineering. She's a genius. Whenever I need geometry help, I definitely go to her. Right now she's in Calculus 4. Right now, I'm in Algebra II and Geometry. A few steps down, but that's what three years in age can do for yah. I'm spending the weekend and this is the perfect way to end my week. I just wrapped up the Quadrilateral chapter of geometry with a rather large test that I feel extremely confident on. Which is a first because I suck at geometry. Lets be real here. I'm rocking a solid 78, which in my school is a C-. Hopefully I can get that up with this test. Quizlet definitely helped me memorize the geometric facts about quadrilaterals. Well I'm off to explore college life! Have a good weekend!
