 old north church the enduring fame old north church began on th evening of april 18, 1775 when the church sexton, robert newman, climmed the steeple and held up high two lanters as a signal from paul revere that the british were marching to lexington and concord by sea and not by land. this fatefull event ignited the amarican revilution.
