Hi, the three elements I’m studying are Mercury, lead, and argon.
Mercury
By Jasmine M.
Atomic number: 80
Melting point: -38.83
Boiling Point: 356.73
Symbol: Hg
Mercury is a very poisonous. Do not get it on your body because mercury can get into your skin even if you don't have a cut or injury. Remember, mercury is poisonous so don't get near it.
Mercury's name
This element was named after the planet Mercury. Along time ago the Egyptians called it hydro-argyros which meant liquid silver or water silver. The Romans modified the name to Hydrargyrun. Hydrargyrun means liquid silver. Mercury can also be called quicksilver.
What mercury is in?
Mercury is in many things. It could be in thermometers (that’s how thermometers get its red color). Mercury is even in household switches. It's also in florescent lamps, and batteries. It use to be in toys, microwaves, and latex paint but they don't do that anymore.
More Facts
Mercury is part of Zinc group and is mainly found in Cinnabar and Spain. It rarely occurs free in nature (that means that it rarely occurs alone in nature, not combined with something else).
The discovery of Mercury
The discoverer of mercury is unknown. We do know that it was found in Egyptian tombs long ago in the 1500 BC.
Lead
By Jasmine M.
Atomic Number: 82
Melting point: 327.46
Boiling Point: 1749
Color: Blueish
Symbol: Pb
-Like mercury, lead is also poisonous.
Lead's name
The name lead comes from the Latin word plumbum. Plumbum, like hydrargyrun, means liquid silver.
What lead is in
Lead is mostly found in Lead sulfide. It is also in batteries, paint, soil, dust, and in drinking water. Yep, Lead is in drinking water. Lead is also in Link tanks.
Lead for water pipes
Lead has been known for a long time. The ancient Romans used lead to make water pipes. Some of the water pipes are made out of lead today.
More facts
Period number: 6
Group number: 14
What is Lead use for?
Lead may be poisonous but it can be used for many things. Again, lead can be used for water pipes. It can also be used for X-ray shields and Gamma-Ray radiation. Some of the alloys in lead are also used for things.
The discovery of Lead
The person who discovered lead is unknown. We do know that it was discovered about 7000 years ago.
Argon
By Jasmine M.
Atomic Number: 18
boiling point: -185.89
Melting point: -189.34
Colorless
Odorless
Tasteless
Contains 121 neurons
Symbol: Ar
Number of Neutrons: 22
Argon is part of the Noble gas group (argon is a type of gas) and the Carbon group.
Argon's name
The name Argon is from the Greek word Argos. Argos means inactive.
The discovery of Argon
Argon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay and Lord Raleigh. Sir William also discovered Krypton. It was found in Scotland in 1894.
Argon in Lamps
Argon is mixed with Krypos in fluorescent and incandescent lamps. The reason why is because it prevents oxygen from the hot filament.
Argon in the Earth
The Earth's atmosphere is 0.93% made out of argon. The Earth crust contains 1.2 of argon in it. In the water, there is 0.6 of Argon.
Mercury
Mercury
Mercury is not in the Earth's atmosphere. It is in the Earth's crust and water. There is 0.08 of mercury in the Earth's crust and there is 0.00003 of mercury in the Earth's ocean.

Hi, I’m Jasmine and I’m going to talk about Sacagawea. I hope you enjoy it!
Why am I writing a blog about Sacagawea? The reason why is because Sacagawea is a person that interests me. I think that Sacagawea is a very special person and that is why I chose her for my blog.
I think that Sacagawea is special because she was the one who helped Louis and Clark on their expedition. I don’t think that Louis and Clark could have done it without her. Sacagawea helped them on the expedition a lot. She was the one who got horses for them. She was also the interpreter when they came upon an Indian tribe.
Now I am going to tell you some facts about her. Sacagawea was born in 1788. She was the sister of the Shoshone Chief. When she was about 12 years old, she was captured and sold as a slave to a French-Canadian trader. Instead of working for the man, she married him. She had a son named Jean Baptiste. Jean became the youngest explorer ever.
The United States grew twice the size due to the Louisiana Purchase. Sacagawea and her husband were asked to help Louis and Clark on their expedition. She accepted and helped Louis and Clark a lot.
I would really like to learn more about Sacagawea. If I got to meet her face to face I would ask her these questions. What did you do as a child? How was your childhood? Did you like the expedition? Why did you choose to go on the expedition with Louis and Clark?
That would be really cool to be able to talk to her in person. Anyway, I hope you are also very interested in Sacagawea because I’m sure am. Well, that’s the end of my blog and I hope you enjoyed it!

Uncle Dock’s Story

Have you ever read a book called The Wanderer? At the end of the book, Rosalie decided to leave for Spain instead of marrying Uncle Dock. This is how I would have ended this story.
It was a lovely day and Rosalie and Dock decided to go for a walk. They walked and walked in till they came to a bench. They sat there watching every thing around them. Then, Dock turned to Rosalie. He asked her to marry him.
Rosalie said that she had important plans in Spain. She was visiting her family there and that she had to leave for the airport tomorrow. Rosalie decided to go home, leaving Dock sitting alone.
When Dock went home, he made a big announcement. “I’m going to the airport tomorrow.” Everyone was surprised. After Dock explained what happened, everyone agreed to this idea.
The next day, everybody left early. When they arrived at the airport, the planes haven’t taken off yet. They look around and around but no Rosalie. Finally, they spotted a woman with a bright yellow dress. “Rosalie!” Dock said running towards her. “I’m coming with you to Spain! I bought plane tickets!”
Everyone was shocked. Plane tickets?! How did Dock get those? Dock said he got the tickets without anybody knowing. Soon everybody was on the plane and Dock was with Rosalie.
Later
Thunder storms have gathered and it’s suddenly raining. It looks like it’s raining harder every minute. It was nice and sunny and now it’s dark and stormy. This is very odd.
Later(again)
The PLANE! It’s starting to tip and wobble. IT”S STARTING FOR THE GROUND! Down, down, down, to the ground. Everyone was shouting and screaming. Down, down and CRASH! The plane crashed…..
Nobody survived………………………………………..Nobody………

Jr. Iditarod and Their Protection

The Jr. Iditarod can be a difficult and dangerous race. It takes place in the winter so snow would fall making this race even harder. What if the racers and their dog teams get lost? What if they fall and get injured? What would happen? If it’s dangerous then how do people protect the young racers and dogs? What you’re reading right now has the answers.
The Jr. Iditarod is a long race. Their dogs would certainly get tired and hungry. Luckily, every racer (musher) has 2 ponds of food per dog. When a racer finishes the race they must be carrying the same amount of food in each dog’s bag. That way, they would know if they were giving each dog a fair amount. While racing, they are allowed to give the dogs snacks. It is important to feed the dogs so they can regain their energy.
The dogs been running and running. Again, the racers are allowed to feed the dogs snacks but even with snacks they will still be tired. How do the dogs keep running? The answer is a check point. When the dogs are racing they stop at check points. There, dogs can get meals. The racers have to check to make sure every dog in the team is all right. They also need to check the dog’s feet because after running their feet can be injured and some might have cuts. If their feet are injured, the dog needs to wear a bootie to protect it.
Now the dogs are ready to run again after stopping at the check point. They run some more. Over snow, past frozen lakes, and then come upon a wooden cabin. The wooden cabin is another check point. This check point is different, though. This one is called the ½ way point.
When they reach this point the dogs need to rest. The rule is that the racers have to stay at the check point for 10 hours. They also need to get to work. They need to cook food (for the dogs and the racer), boil ice to get water, check the dogs again, and make a warm fire.
Soon the night will fall and they need to sleep. The mushers need to keep the fire heated and to dogs warm. The racers have a choice of sleeping until their ten hours are up, or help the other racers.
After ten hours the racers can collect their dogs and finish the race. When they finish the race, the other people need to make sure the mushers were treating the dog’s right. To do this, they watch the dogs to see if they still have a lot of energy. If the dogs jump around and are willing to run then they would know that the musher was doing the right thing. If the dogs are tired and are weak then the racer has treated the dogs wrong.
Now you see, the Jr. Iditarod is concern about the racers and dogs and that they try to help them during races.

Kindle Touch

Dear Mom and Dad,
You’re probably wondering why I’m writing this letter. Well, I’m doing this to tell you about the kindle touch. The Kindle Touch is an extraordinary machine.
I want the kindle touch because then I won’t need to purchase any books any more. Books can be expensive. Instead of buying so many books, let’s buy a kindle. Think about all the money we can save.
The Kindle Touch is great because it is all about reading. There are no games on it, just books.
Plus, the kindle is easy to use. Many people that already have a kindle touch said it is very simple to use. All you need to do is pick a book and start reading. It’s that easy. Again, many people already have one and I want one myself. In my own opinion, I prefer the kindle touch than books.
How much money is it? That is probably going to be the first thing you ask. Well, it used to be $139.00. Now it is only $99.00. You save $40.
Another thing about the kindle is that its touch screened. That’s why it’s called the kindle Touch. Instead of having to push buttons you can simply tap a book on the screen.
After reading this, I’m sure you would agree with me, we should get a kindle.
From your daughter,
Jasmine

Why Homer Decides To Save Harold

In the book, The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg, Homer looses his brother, Harold. He looses him by getting his uncle so mad, that he sold his brother to the army. Later, Homer runs away and finds a house that is miles away from his uncle’s house. The person that lives in the house was very kind and decides to take care of him so he can be safe and healthy. Homer, though, didn’t want to stay in the house. He was desperate to find Harold.
Why? Why did homer decide to save Harold instead of staying in the protective house? As you read on, you will learn why I think he went to save his brother.
First of all, I think he wants to save Harold because he cares about him. I think he really cares about Harold. I think of this because Harold always helped him and cared for him. I believe that Homer cares just as much as Harold cares for him.
Again, I told you before, Harold really cared about Homer. Another reason I think Homer wants to save Harold is because since Harold helped him a lot, he wants to help him back. So I think that Homer wants to show Harold how much he cared for him.
As I read the book, I realized that Homer felt a little guilty that Harold is gone because he keeps on mentioning that if he didn’t get his uncle so mad Harold, would still be with him. So, I think that is another reason he wants to save Harold so badly, because he feels guilty of what he has done.
The last reason I think that Homer wants to save Harold is because I think Homer would prefer Harold than his safety. I think of this because Homer decided not to stay in the protected house and to save Harold instead.
So now you know why Homer decided to leave the house and save Harold. To my opinion, I think the most important reason why Homer is so desperate to save Harold, is because he cares about him. Homer really cares about his brother, Harold.

Letter to Aunt Lilly

Dear Aunt Lilly,
How have you been? I’ve missed you so much. I long to see you again.
Right now I am on the Mayflower searching for a land to settle in. This ship is cold, damp, slippery, and wet. I try to find comfort but it is so congested there is little room to relax. Plus the food is not good. Some of our food had spoiled and some had been stolen by pesky mice.
It is hard to sleep but even with this torture we will not give up. I have faith that we will find this new land.
We had lots of problems on this ship before like strong, furious storms. People are getting sick, but nobody has died yet. All these problems, though, are not compare to this other problem. This other problem was dreadful. This problem had something to do with the captain.
One beautiful day, with no storms, everybody felt relaxed at last. Just when I was feeling relaxed too, something terrible happened. The captain started coughing and choking. Sailors rushed to his side.
People started to panic, including me. My father, mother, and brother must have heard the commotion and rushed toward me. “What happened?” My mother asked. Soon I heard others asking the same questions my mother had just asked.
All of a sudden the captain fell to his knees. People gathered around him but the sailors urged them to back off and that they could handle it. When they looking back at the suffering captain, their faces changed. I could tell they didn’t know what to do.
Before anybody can do anything else, a man came out running with a bottle of liquid, medicine. He quickly helps the captain and feeds him the medicine. The captain closed his eyes. Everybody watched. He choked and continued coughing with his eyes still closed. People hesitated. Then he opened them. “I feel better, thank you!” The captain said.
Everybody cheered, including me and my family. We soon figure that the man with the medicine was a doctor. People have claimed he had helped their sick ones before including them selves.
It was a miracle! First the captain was choking then he was fine. It was like nothing ever happened!
I am very glad that our captain is okay. Oh, and do not worry, me and my family is okay, too. We are not sick like others just yet. Any ways I hope you get this letter and I hope you are okay, too!
You’re Niece,
Jasmine
P.S. Come visit us when we find this new land.
