Questions for Final Exam

For this weeks blog I was asked to post two review questions for the final exam. The final exam is this week and I need to start studying, so I am going to start by making these review questions. My first question is: What does MAPA COCI stand for? A hint for this question is to remember lines in triangles and their concurrent points!
My next question is: How do you find the circumference of a circle with a radius of 10 cm?
Answers: Question 1: Median, Altitude, Perpendicular Bisector, Angle Bisector. Centroid, Orthocenter, Circumcenter, Incenter.
Question 2: 20pi cm.

This week in geometry we started talking about trigonometry. We are doing right triangle trig, which so far I find easy. The three trig formulas we have learned are sine, cosine, and tangent. In a right triangle to find the sine you use the opposite side and the hypotenuse of the angle you are trying to find. To help remember what sides to use with sine I remember SOH. To find cosine you use the adjacent side and the hypotenuse of the angle you are trying to find and to help remember cosine I remember CAH. To find tangent you use the opposite side and the adjacent side of the angle you are trying to find and to help remember tangent I remember TOA. SOH CAH TOA is a trick that we were taught to help remember the trig functions, I find this trick very helpful and useful.

Area Formulas

Lately in geometry we have been working with area. We have been doing the area of parallelograms, trapezoids, kites, triangles, regular polygons, and circles. There are a lot of formulas that we need to remember and sometime they get confusing. My favorite area formula is the triangle area formula. The formula for triangles is A=1/2bh. This is my favorite formula because it is fun to use and easy to remember. This formula is also very helpful and needed to solve many problems.

Right Triangle Patterns

This week in class we talked about special patterns in right triangles that help us find two other sides of a triangle when you know one side. One of the patterns is that you know the angle measures are 45º-45º-90º. In this pattern the two legs are equal and the hypotenuse is √2 of one leg. The other pattern is 30º-60º-90º. In this pattern the shortest leg is half of the hypotenuse, or the hypotenuse is two times the short leg and the longer leg is √3 of the short leg. I find these patterns very helpful and are easy to use. I remember the 45º-45º-90º by knowing that two of the legs have to be the same because the angles are the same. I remember the 30º-60º- 90º by knowing that the hypotenuse is double the short leg.

pythagorean theorem

This week in geometry we talked about the pythagorean theorem. Which is the theorem used to find the third side in a right triangle, when you know two other sides. The theorem is a2 + b2= c2, where a and b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse. We learned about this theorem last year so that was a review, but some of the ways we are using it is new, which makes it interesting and challenging.

Radicals

This week we started a new chapter on area. Right now we are doing radicals and the pythagorean theorem. I like this chapter so far because it is basically a review of algebra one. We are working on simplifying radicals, which I find easy as long as you know what the number can be divided by. When a radical is in simplest form there are no square factors in the radical. We also had a quest last week and hopefully I did well on that!

Vacation

This week are on vacation and it is very warm out! I am not going anywhere this week so I am glad it is warm here. In geometry we started a new project on scratch. We also worked on reflections which is a type of transformation. To do a reflection you are given a line that you reflect the shape over. To reflect the shape you need to make a perpendicular line from each point and find the distance for the new point.

Happy Easter everyone! Today is Easter Sunday and I hope everyone is having a good day! This week we had Friday off so it was a nice short week. Then after this coming week we have vacation, so far April hasn't been a very hard month for school! In geometry we have just begun a new chapter on Transformations. So far I like this chapter and find it interesting. We are going to do a scratch project soon on translations, so that should be fun. Have a great week!

Quarter Four

It is now quarter four and we only have a couple more months of school left! I can't believe how fast this year has gone by. It seems like I just started this school year. It doesn't feel like spring and the winter went by so fast because we didn't get any snow. This week in geometry we had a test on quadrilaterals. Now we are starting a new chapter, so I am not sure what we will be learning about next.

It is now officially spring, but it doesn't feel like it right now. On Wednesday and Thursday it was so nice and warm out. It was around 80º and I was wearing shorts! Now it is about 40º and raining. This weather is crazy! This week in geometry we talked more about quadrilaterals. We learned about the theorems that go along with different quadrilaterals. We also learned about the different characteristics of the diagonals. Hopefully it warms up again soon!
