Brainpop

          By: Nadia

On June 12th my class got to visit Brainpop Headquarters in New York City! We did lots of fun stuff! We also saw the people who create videos and games.

Our guide showed us inside. He talked about the history of Brainpop. The most surprising part of the trip to me was when the guide showed us inside it was surprising because the walls were white! I expected to see colored walls with pictures of Moby. Our guide said they just moved to that office. and not everybody working there wanted pictures of moby on the walls.

Our guide showed us the creators of games and videos. When went to the creators they told and showed us how they made videos, games or animation. One of the game creators showed us a game he just created. I think it was called Guts and Bolts. He explained to us how to play.

My favorite part was when our guide took us into a room. He gave us strips of paper and we had to but then in order. Then he showed us a video to check our answers. Then another guy came in and showed us how to make a storyboard. They gave us a piece of paper to make our own storyboards.

It was really fun field trip! I think every teacher should take their class to Brainpop Headquarters. Also, If you are a student and really really really want to go here ask your teacher. It was an astounding field trip=http://

NO UNIFORMS!

By:Nadia

I just read an astonishing blog called Persuasive Essay By: Ross. It was about why kids shouldn’t have to wear school uniforms. When he said “Some people say uniforms are uncomfortable,” it made me think about how grateful I am that I don’t have to wear a school uniform.

When I first went to elementary school, I thought it was great! There were so many kids. There were so many things to play with. I wasn’t even thinking about if I had to wear a uniform.

I also wished the school year would never end! I made so many new friends! The work seemed  easy. We mostly had only one sheet  for homework.

Then later, the work got harder, I didn’t really like school anymore. I started thinking about the bad things about school. Then it hit me! Did I have to wear a uniform? If the principal thought kids wanted to wear uniforms, she was wrong! By giving kids uniforms the principal had made a huge blunder!

To some kids uniforms could be  uncomfortable.  Uniforms seem boring. Some kids could  be allergic to the material the uniforms are made from.

When I found out that I didn’t have to wear a uniform, I was so ecstatic. To this day I am still grateful that I don’t have to wear a uniform.  I get to wear clothes I feel comfortable in.  I get to choose from a variety  of clothes.  With uniforms, you don’t get to choose from a variety.

New York Food

By:Nadia Narine

One reason people should come to New York is because of the good food. The food is amazing and there are so many types of food  to choose from. That’s because New York is a multicultural place! There’s so many cultures! If you don’t want to eat somewhere you take the food to go or you can go to the grocery store and buy some food there, you can buy fruits, vegetables, and things you can cook by yourself like spaghetti, chicken and stuff like that. You could close your eyes, spin around and when you open your eyes you’ll probably see a food place.

The food is really amazing in New York. It’s tasty, delicious  and the  spices are great. Almost anyone can eat the food here in New York or find something here to eat.

There is a big variety of food to pick from! There’s Indian food, Italian food, Chinese food, and so much more! If you never had another culture’s food, New York is the place to go. My favorite restaurant is an Italian restaurant called Papa Ciro’s. You could order salad, different types of pasta, and all kinds of pizza! They even had pizza with pasta on it. I got a normal slice. when I was done I ordered Italian ice. They had a  lot of flavors like lemon, cherry, chocolate, rainbow, and many more. I got rainbow. I had a good time. If you don’t like one kind of food, you can try another.

There are many other reasons to visit New York however, great food is just one reason to come to New York. I think that people should visit New York because they would have a good time that they will always remember.

            Bud, not Buddy

            By: Nadia

In the book, Bud, not Buddy, the main theme was a search for family. Bud’s mother, was a kind woman. According to Bud, she was protective of him. The character, Herman E. Calloway, was a serious man.  When he found out his daughter died, he became very emotional.  Another character, Lefty Lewis, always asked Bud many questions about his mother. He seemed very concerned about Bud’s situation.  The character, Miss Thomas, was kind and generous, she went out of her way to get something that was special to Bud. Bud is a boy whose mother died.  He remembers that his mother never use to speak about his father.  Bud thinks, a man by the name of Herman E. Calloway might be his father.  The reason for that is  because his mother always kept fliers of Herman  and his band.  After his mother died Bud wanted to find his family, he sets out to find his “father”, he also became lonely.  After Bud’s mother died, he went to another home.

Bud was placed in a foster home. He didn’t like this foster home because whenever you did anything wrong they smacked you. After Bud came out of that foster home, the Amesons family  took Bud in. Tod Ameson, their son, was a little brat. Once, Tod shoved a pencil up Bud’s nose and  they got into a fight. As a result, they made Bud sleep in the shed.  Bud missed his mother very much after she died.  This is why he wanted to find  his family. As it says in the book, Bud left the Ameson’s home because he was not happy and set out in search for his family.

One night, Bud went walking in the streets to find his father. According to the book, Bud, not Buddy, Bud met a stranger who took him to his house.  There the stranger got to know Bud.  Bud told him he is looking for his “father” named Herman E. Calloway.  The stranger knew where Mr. Calloway lived and took Bud there.

Bud became lonely and sad as a result, this made him search for his “father.” As it says in the book, Bud has a suitcase which he always likes to carry with him because it has items in it that he thinks is important . Things that reminded him of his mom & Herman E. Calloway, such as, some rocks his mother gave to him, a picture of his mom and a flier of  Herman E. Calloway with his band.

Finally, Bud met Herman E. Calloway. Mr. Calloway tried to get to know Bud by asking him several questions.  Bud was asked where he got the  rocks from. Bud said, he got it from his mother. Herman asked Bud, what was his mother’s name. Bud replied, her name is Angela Caldwell. After they exchanged information, it tuned out that, Herman E. Calloway was the father of Bud’s mother. This person  was actually Bud’s grandfather.   At the end, Bud ended up living with his, now found grandfather, Mr. Calloway.  I think Bud is happier now that he found family.

            Winter Vacation

            By: Nadia

On my winter vacation to a dude ranch, I went snow  tubing. This was my very first time. Even though there were several activities to participate in each day, snow tubing became my favorite.

Everyday, we got an early start. In the afternoon, we did indoor activities and in the morning we did outdoor activities. The most fun outdoor activity was snow tubing.

For this activity,  the ranch makes their own snow.  When I first got to the snow tubing area, I was surprised.  The hill appeared to be so high.  This made me excited.

We had to get on a line to participate.  The staff gave us instructions.  Then they gave us each a snow tube. I said, “I’m going first!” But, my mom said, “Let your dad go first.” So, my dad went first. At least, I got a blue snow tube which is my favorite color, I thought. We got inside one by one and then they pushed us down the hill.  When we got to the bottom of the hill, we had to come up back to the top of the hill with the snow tube.  I didn’t really like this part of the activity because we had to pull the snow tube up the hill and this was tiring.

This was my first time,  I went snow tubing.  It was a very interesting activity.  However, I don’t think kids should have to bring the snow tube back up the hill.  I do recommend this exciting activity for others to try.  I will certainly do this again.

Goals

                        Goals

                        By:Nadia

When goals are created, it helps us to improve  ourselves. Two of the goals I created,  I’ve have been working hard on from the beginning of the school year. I’ve been working on doing math quicker.   Also, I’ve been working on  becoming a better reader. I have a goal that I really wasn’t working on. That goal is to become neater in writing.

I have reached my goal of doing math quicker.  I am able to do rocket math quicker than in the past. Also, I moved from addition to subtraction. I worked on my math goal by practicing hard every day.  One day, the TV was on while I was about to practice math. I asked my sister, “Can you lower the TV?” “No!” She replied. Should I go turn off the TV? Yes, I thought. I went and took the TV off because I didn’t want any distractions.  On that same day, I was able to finish my math practice quicker than the day before.

Also, I have improved on my reading goal.  I’ve moved up four levels in reading.  I would still like to improve further on my reading goal.  Therefore, I would like to improve on reading smoother. One day, my cousins were over and I was trying to focus on my reading. They were playing a Wii game. “Can you wait until I’m finished reading?” I asked. My cousin, Ajay said, “Fine.” My other cousin, didn’t  respond. I thought she was about to catch a fit. So, I went to play with them.

I  have a goal that I didn’t succeed in. Which is writing neater. I wasn’t really working on it. One time, I was doing homework and I had to go somewhere, so I ended up  writing very sloppy. Then I thought, I should  rewrite this and make it neater.  My dad said, “Come on, we have to go.” I said, “Okay.”

I have a new goal, which is to improve in writing.   To improve in writing, I need to use more vocabulary words.  I also need to improve on my organization skills in writing.

I will be  keeping my old goal, which is to become a better reader. I will need to focus more on my reading.  I will need to improve on my fluency in reading. I would like to read less choppy. Also, I will continue to read as much as I can.  I hope, I am able to reach my goals.

Food Web

By: Nadia Narine

Many years ago, panthers use to live on Long Island.  When humans came to settle, they killed the panthers.  Therefore, there are no more panthers on Long Island.  This has had a major affect on the Long Island food web.

The panthers on Long Island were killed by humans.  The humans killed the panthers because they feared them.  Panthers preys include humans therefore, they had no choice but to kill them.

The panther’s preys includes deer, raccoons, armadillos, warthogs, wild boar, antelopes, humans and other small species like birds and rabbits. Their predators are lions, hyena and humans. If panthers are removed from the food web, there will be an increase in the wildlife.   A farmer’s life stocks will increase because the panthers are not there.  Humans will be able to settle more comfortably.  Plants will be affected due to  the increase in deer  because they will eat more plants.

Humans could not settle on Long Island and allow the panthers to stay.  Humans feared panthers therefore, panthers would have been hunted by humans.

Taking one thing out of the food web will affect it.  As a result,  taking the panther out of the food web affected

humans, wildlife and plants.

First, we went to the Egyptian Exhibit. Next, we went to the Chinese Exhibit, they had real fish! Then, we went to the Asian Exhibit and European paintings. Finally, we got to the gift shop. We all got to choose something. I chose a building block set. I can’t wait to go there again.
