Title: Science in Action (11/10/11)
Description: We have been learning about how animals survive and interact with each other within a habitat. We also got an opportunity to watch a Planet Earth video and study our crayfish. Think about all you have learned about animals and habitats.

Remember we learned that there used to be large cats, panthers, on Long Island. Why don't they live here anymore? What has changed among the other animals and plants because the panthers aren't here? Could we have prevented this change and still settled Long Island? If yes, how? If no, why not?

In your blog, be sure to include the following:

1. A description of the habitat and the food web within.

2. The reason panthers are no longer here.

3. The effect of no panthers on other wildlife.

4. How this could have been different.

5. Be focused, organized, and detailed.

6. Use strong science vocabulary.

7. Edit carefully for spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

8. Submit early for suggestions.

This blog is due on November 21st. Early submissions must be in by November 17th.

Long Island Without Panthers

By Ryan

Long ago the natural habitat of Long Island was different. Long Island was mostly covered by forests, grasslands, wetlands and sand plains. It had a different landscape and wildlife . Then Long Island started to become settled. As it got more populated, the settlers would  cut down trees, built homes, make roads. Soon, the forests began to disappear because lots of trees were being cut.  Also, grasslands were being cleared to make room to build.

Before the settlers arrived, the native habitat allowed different wildlife to exist in Long Island, such as wolves, elks and large cats such as the panther. The open land, hills, trees, wetlands and grasslands gave them shelter from humans, and lots of space to roam. It was and ideal environment for them to exist. Panthers were able to hunt large prey such as deer and other small mammals and rodents.

So, why don’t we have panthers in Long Island anymore?

One reason is that the early settlers that arrived to Long Island hunted and trapped them because they thought that they would attack their livestock, and thought that they were dangerous creatures.

The next reason that the panthers are not here is that their natural habitat was being destroyed, changed, and the food chain was being affected for all wild life . For example, Panthers ate small animals such as porcupines, rodents  and mammals. But since the habitat was changing ,  these smaller animals were leaving the area or dying because they too, didn’t have enough food or shelter.

Finally, another reason that the panther is not here is that another animal, the deer, which was the main prey for the panther, and their main food source , were also  being affected by the changes in the habitat, and were being hunted by humans.

Since their food source was scarce and the habitat was changing, the panther was forced to migrate to other places.

Today Long Island faces a big problem with the deer population .  Since the deer do not have that many predators, such as the panther, their numbers have increased to the point where they are too many, and it is causing a huge problem for us. The problem with deer is that they eat anything. They are changing the ecology of forests and causing problems for farms by destroying  their  crops.

Deer are destroying trees and seedlings, so in years to come there may not be certain species of plants and trees. If certain types of trees die, then the forests will change or maybe even disappear. If certain trees disappear, then certain types of animal species may also disappear. For example, some birds need underbrush to nest, other birds like the songbirds need low ground trees for nesting. Certain species of animals may need to feed from the fruits of a type of tree, and if the tree disappears then they can not feed themselves anymore. Also certain type of insects like certain types of plants or trees and they  would be affected by this problem, so they would either die or be force to migrate elsewhere.

If this continues maybe entire species of animals, insects , plants, fruits  and trees could disappear completely forever.

The future of our natural habitat  and our food supply are in terrible danger!

I think it would have been difficult to have settled Long Island without decreasing the panther population.  The settlers needed the land to plant crops and to raise farm animals . The wild life would have had to compete with domestic animals for food, and if they didn’t have a big enough food source they could have been a danger to humans.  Although they usually do not attack humans, if they are hungry enough, panthers will attack.

I think what the settlers could have done is just to drive the panthers away far enough (to large areas that they were not being populated) so that they were not a danger to people. Then later they could have made a nature preserve for them. That way some of the original habitat would have been preserved and the food chain would not have been affected so much.

Black Panthers were native to mso-bidi-font-family:Arial">Long Island back when mso-bidi-font-family:Arial">Long Island was less developed and the area was less populated. The Black Panther’s habitats include the rainforest, marshland, woodlands, swamps, savannahs, and even mountains and deserts. The natural habitats for the Black Panthers no longer exist in Long Island because the humans cut down the trees to develop the area and humans killed the Black Panthers.

Black Panthers are mainly carnivores and their food includes various species of mammals, reptiles, and birds. Black Panthers preyed mainly on deer before they became extinct on
Long Island. Now the deer have no predators and the deer population is out of control.

The over population of deer on mso-bidi-font-family:Arial">Long Island has also changed the ecosystem of the forests.  The deer feed on saplings and shrubs.   Some forests on Long Island have been killed because of the deer over feeding on the plants.

The deer have affected the humans by adapting to our environment and feeding on our fields, orchards, lawns and gardens.  This affects the human food supply.

Humans are now hunting the deer to help control the population.

This could have been different if we had kept some natural habitat areas for the Black Panthers on Long Island mso-bidi-font-family:Arial"> so that the food chain could be have been balanced.

Many years ago Panthers were around. Then when the humans arrived they killed the panthers. Also their habitat and properties. It also had a major affect in the panthers food chain.A panthers food web is have panthers, deers, antelopes, fish, grass, and sunlight.By changing one thing affected the whole food chain.Black panthers are powerful, intelligent, and exotic animals. They were very dangerous because we bulldozed there habitat back then so they attacked. They killed many people. The hunters hunted them. They killed the panthers. They were so happy. Then more and more deer appeared. So if the panthers were killed the deer would have no predator! So deer race would go on and on.Also antelopes, fish, birds, monkey, and rodents. It was against the law to kill deer because it was not deer hunting season. This could have been different if the panthers were nice and kind like dogs.If the humans let the panthers stay they still would have attacked. Also we would have still destroyed their habitat. They would still have there habitat. The black panthers habitats included The,marshland, woodland, swamps, mountains. There habitat is a plain with grass, water, rocks, trees, sticks, and food.Black panthers can survive only in natural communities which provided good habitat areas for them. However, the black panthers habitats and natural communities are threatened by human beings and environmental deterioration.I learned that if you kill one animal in the food web you destroy the whole food web.

 Panthers

We used to have panthers on Long Island. Now we don’t because when the humans settled here they killed all the panthers. The thing that changed was in Long Island when all the panthers got killed was that there were to many deer here, this killing ruined the food chain. We could have not survived with panthers living here because they also eat humans so we would all die from these panthers.

Here is a description of the panthers habitat and food web. The black panther’s habitats are the rainforest, marshland, woodlands, swamps, savannahs, and even mountains and deserts. The black panther eats birds, monkeys, fish, rodents, deer, and antelope. And the major enemy of the panther was a tiger.

Long ago panthers used to live on Long Island. When humans settled here, they destroyed all the panthers habitats.Since we killed the panthers we had made a major effect to the food web.By changing this we could of made wildlife a much better life for the animals. We killed their habitat and changed it into our home.Panthers eat rabbits, deer and rodents. Rabbits eat carrots which come from sunlight, fruits, vegetables and dirt. A deer eats grass. Rats cheese and left over food. Now that their are no Panthers in our area  their are too many deer and they destroy crops, lawns and also grass because they are  herbivores and all herbivores eat grass. We could not have lived with Panthers because when ever we go outside a panther would jump and kill us. they would want to kill us because they are carnivores and all carnivores eat meat and we have meat.It would also be very hard because t we would have to bring a weapon were ever we go!! All of these are good reasons on why should never ever mess with a food chain or food web!

Panthers

A panther’s habitat has a lot of vegetation, water, sunlight and it also has a lot of trees. The reason why there aren’t any more panther’s here in the U.S.A is because we started monopolizing them because they are one of our enemies. The things that are happening now that there aren’t any panthers in the U.S.A is that there is a large population of deer! There was not as much deer when the panthers were still in the U.S.A because panthers eat deer. The way life would be if panthers were still here is that there would be a larger amount of panthers than people, because panthers eat us to.

This essay is about panthers and how the other animals in the food chain are all affected if one animal dies. Such as if the panthers die then there is two much squirls then thier is too much chipmunks then... So if one animal dies it makes a big affect in that food chain or food web

Long ago panthers used to live on long island people killed the panthers spices and habitat. changing one thing in a food web affects everything in that food web. So now there is a majoir affect in the long island food chain.people on long island killed the panthers by building houses on panthers habitat. What humans had to do with this is that they built houses on the land and now it take away the panthers habitat and property so now they can not eat the grass or any other animals that live in free land.

3. Paragraph 2: What is a panther’s food web? Mrs.paisi this picture of the food web is on my google docs so if you want to check it, all of the questons relate to that

If the panthers get removed from the chain then there will be to many deer, too many ducks, too many eagles, too many rabbits and too many chipmunks. So if you take the panthers away, you will make a big change in the long island food web because there will be more of each animal around and less of the food they eat.

Panthers and humans can not live here together because the panthers would eat our houses, crops and other property. So,panthers could not live amoung humans because they would be taking over our land and our lives.

I have learn that if you take away a certain part of the food chain, everything in the chain will be affected so that means if you take panthers now there is to many deer and so on I think this was signed so we know that if you take one animal out of a food chain it messes up that whole chain

Food Web

By: Nadia Narine

Many years ago, panthers use to live on Long Island.  When humans came to settle, they killed the panthers.  Therefore, there are no more panthers on Long Island.  This has had a major affect on the Long Island food web.

The panthers on Long Island were killed by humans.  The humans killed the panthers because they feared them.  Panthers preys include humans therefore, they had no choice but to kill them.

The panther’s preys includes deer, raccoons, armadillos, warthogs, wild boar, antelopes, humans and other small species like birds and rabbits. Their predators are lions, hyena and humans. If panthers are removed from the food web, there will be an increase in the wildlife.   A farmer’s life stocks will increase because the panthers are not there.  Humans will be able to settle more comfortably.  Plants will be affected due to  the increase in deer  because they will eat more plants.

Humans could not settle on Long Island and allow the panthers to stay.  Humans feared panthers therefore, panthers would have been hunted by humans.

Taking one thing out of the food web will affect it.  As a result,  taking the panther out of the food web affected

humans, wildlife and plants.

CatrionaDD -- The Black Panther

Article posted November 28, 2011 at 12:15 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 989

Food webs are very unique because if one thing is changed it will have an effect on everything included in the web. The food web represents the delicate cycle of nature, if upset it will result in huge changes for all animals and plants in the habitat.

This essay will examine the Black Panthers food web and habitat and how it can change.

Black Panthers can adapt to living in a wide variety of habitats. The Black Panthers’ habitats include the rain forest, marshland,

woodland, swamps, deserts, and mountains.

The Black Panther is a consumer. Their food web includes meat, birds, monkeys, fish, rodents, deer, and antelope. Meat is their main source of nourishment, therefore, they are carnivores. They would be on the top of the food chain. The Black Panther is the predator and what it consumes is its prey. The Black Panther has a food web which consists of six parts. First the food web will start at the at the vegetation level, which is the producer. Then it will work its way up to the insects, which will then be consumed by birds. The birds will be consumed by animals such as foxes. The fox will be the prey of the deer. Lastly,at the top of the food chain will be the panther who consumes the deer.

The Black Panther does not live on Long Island any longer because the habitat has changed due to construction, population and expansion. All these factors pushed the black panthers habitat into extinction on Long Island.

Once the panther was gone, it’s prey would increase in population since it was no longer being hunted. This would effect the balance of the food web. For example, once the panther was gone, there would be another top predator in the food chain. They would be competing for both less available lower level prey and living space.

I don’t think it would have been possible for the black panther and humans to live in the same habitat. It would have been dangerous for both species. Also, human progress would have been hard to stop.

In conclusion you would think the Black Panther had it all being at the top of the food chain. Unfortunately, other factors beyond its control led to changes in his habitat.

Most panthers live in jungles of South and Central America. A panther’s food web includes pigs, plants, sun, tiger and human. Plants need sun to grow. Pigs and humans eat plants. Panthers can kill humans and pigs. Tigers can kill panthers, humans and pigs. The reason that there are no longer panthers on long island is because the panthers used to kill the humans so to protect themselves, humans started killing panthers. Now humans can live in forests and camp there. The effect of no panthers is on animals that eat panthers, such as a tigers. Tigers might get instinct because they won’t have food to grow and live. Tigers will not become instinct if panthers are still around.

One change in the food web makes a huge difference that rued  the habitat. The reason why their  is no more panthers is all because they humans. We killed them we destroyed there had no were to live . The lucky panthers were baffled and scared about  us and swam off.Since they left and died there is alot of deer that made a huge difference in the food web. Because they grass lives on the sun and deer lived on grass and panthers ate deer .Because of that over population of deer we now have a hunting season for deer .If panthers were here we would have more grass because there would be less deer and we would not have a deer hunting season.I think we could still of lived with panthers if a brave group of people domesticated them. Now us the human race know learned that we should never of messed with the food web or ever will.

Article posted November 27, 2011 at 08:13 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 805

The essay is about the effects of eliminating a part of the food web. The food web is very important in an animals life. Their life depends upon the food web and their habitat.
Panthers are usually found in Asia, Africa and America. The common habitat of panthers are deserts and forests. Panthers use to be found in Long Island long ago. Long Island use to be a remote place. Gradually people started settling in Long Island and killing Panthers and their habitat. Now Long Island is a crowed place , full of houses and people so you don’t find panthers in Long Island any more.
Panthers are carnivorous animals and they eat big animals like deer, but they also eat small animals like rabbits and birds.
If panthers are removed from the food web, there would be lots of changes in the food web.
1.The animals that eat the panthers will die.
2. There would be an over population of mammals like rabbit, birds and deers.
3. Because of the over population of mammals, there wouldn’t enough food for the animals due to which, they will die.The whole cycle will get disturbed.
It is not possible for people to live with panthers.Since, they are carnivorous, they are very dangerous and they can harm humans and pets very easily. They can destroy people’s houses and lawns. People’s life would be in danger if panthers were living with them.Living with Panther would be very hazardous for a human life.
By the whole essay we have learned that eliminating one part of the food web effects the whole cycle of the food web.The life style of all the animals gets disturbed.

Why Panthers are No Longer Here

By: Jordana

Many, many years ago panthers used to live here on long island.  We should care about a animal’s food chain because if it dies then a lot of other animals die too.

Panthers got chased away from long island so they had to swim across a little of the ocean to get to the other side.  The humans had to deal with this situation because they were the ones who chased the panthers of long island.

A panther’s food web is very important.  Since the panthers are no longer here, more and more animals that panthers eat are here on long island.  The food that those animals eat will sooner or later be gone.  There will be more deer, rabbits, rats, and mice.  Since there are no more panthers, a lot animals that panthers eat will die because there won’t be enough food for all of them.

Even if a lot of other animals would die because panthers are no longer here, if they were still here right now people would be scared to go outside because then a panther probably would have already attacked you by the time you get out your door.

Lots of animals could die from just one animals that not there any more.  That is why you should care about an animals food web.

Before panthers lived on Long Island, humans came and destroyed the panthers and as a result, the panther’s food web was destroyed. Now there are to many deer that eat all the grass, the farmers crops and the lawns of people. This has a harsh effect on Long Island wildlife.

Panthers were destroyed on Long Island. People killed the panthers because panthers killed humans.

Panthers were destroyed on Long Island. People killed the panthers because panthers killed humans. If panthers were removed there will be to much chipmunks, squirrels, deer, rabbits and more humans. If there are too much of these their will be too little acorns, grass and oak trees.

Humans could have allowed the panthers to stay but we would not live on Long Island. If panthers did not stay humans would be able to live now.

If we mess with the food web things will go wrong. There will be too much of one animal and what the animal eats will have very little. Like how their are too many deer and less grass. There will be lots of things humans will hunt because their are too much. Like their are too much deer we have to hunt them. There will be very little resources if you mess with the food web. For example there will be too little of one thing and too much of another thing. The food web will be unbalanced if you mess with it.

Science in Action Blog

A long time ago...we had panthers living on Long Island but not any more. We are going to learn what happened to those panthers. Lets look at an animal food web first. When an animal is eliminated from the food web then anything that eats it gets affected. For example: if bugs die then the spider wont have anything to eat. If the spiders do not have anything to eat then the spiders will die. Birds eat spiders and if spiders die it will affect the birds. Just from taking one animal away from the food web can make a big difference in all the other animals.

Now lets look at what happened to the panthers that lived on Long Island. Panthers live in forests, swamps and grasslands. When humans first settled here they took down trees to build their houses. They were scared of the panthers so they started hunting them. Humans destroyed panthers habitat which affected their food web. The panthers either had to move or be killed. Panthers had to adapt to this change in their habitat. That’s why we don’t see any panthers living on Long Island any more.

A panther is a carnivore. Its diet consists of large mammals including deer and also smaller animals like rabbits and birds. In fact panthers eat anything that moves. If we eliminate panther from food web there will be an ample amount of animals. For example: there are a lot of deer and rabbits here. Deer eat plants and can damage farms. Rabbits eat grass and also eat plants. Rabbits can destroy farms just like deer. There are no panthers to hunt them down.

We can let them live here. We can make a national preserve built for the panthers. There will be a fence around it just so they don’t escape or hurt anybody. That may be the only way if you want the panthers to live here.

In conclusion, if you take an animal out of the food web it will affect the other animals and plants.

There are 30 different  subspeices of panthers found across both Asia and Saharan Africa, and with the once large natural range of the panther stretching throughout Central and South America and even into parts of the USA, the Panther has become an incredibly adaptable animal that is found in a variety of different habitats. Although they are most commonly found in tropical and deciduous forests, the Panther can also be found inhabiting both marsh and swampland, along with grasslands and even more hot areas such as deserts and mountains. They even used to  Along with a number of the world's largest felines, the Panther is becoming rarer in the wild primarily due to habitat loss in the form of deforestation.Their are no more panthers on Long Iland because we killed them.
