Bass is Better
My English teacher Miss Transue made me read a short story called “The Bass the River and Sheila Mant.” I didn’t think I would like it but it happened to be one of the best short stories I have ever read! The narrator should have picked the fish over Sheila Mant because Sheila is totally different than the narrator, he only likes Sheila for a couple of reasons, and the fish is a harder catch than Sheila.
To start off, Sheila Mant is almost the complete opposite of the narrator. Sheila is seventeen and the narrators fourteen. Usually in a relationship, from my logic, the guy is older or the couple is about the same age. Secondly Sheila likes Eric not the narrator. Eric comments her on how she looks for example, “Eric said I have the figure to model” (Wetherell 5). She likes his car and the fact that he can drive. The final reason why Sheila and the narrator are different is that she likes the weather cold and he likes it hot. She likes to ski and he is on the swim team and loves to swim. That is why Sheila and the narrator are totally different from each other.
Secondly, some may say that the narrator picked Sheila over the bass because you liked them together; this is how I argue that. The narrator only like her for her looks and that she’s older. The narrator liked the way her legs look and how she wore her clothes. She’s older therefore she probably more mature she probably knows why he likes her. That is why I think the choice he mad was wrong.
The final reason why I think he should have picked the fish over the girl is because the fish is a harder catch than Sheila. Catching that big bass is almost a once in a life-time chance and he’s young he will definitely find somebody better than Sheila. Another reason why Sheila is an easier catch than the fish is because the fish is flopping around and weighs more. My final reason is that Sheila is always gung ho for hanging with anybody and doing anything. That is why Sheila is an easier catch than the fish.
Even though the story is one of the best shorts I have ever read the ending was still disappointing. The narrator should have picked the fish instead of the girl. Now you know why I believe that.
