Sing It Out
The Truth About Romeo and Juliet Songs
In all kinds of song genres artists sing songs that have references to Romeo and Juliet. Think about it…are they accurately depicting Romeo and Juliet or are they just stereotyping Romeo as a boy in love and Juliet as a girl in love…Well it’s time we took a look into one of those songs.
In the song “Juliet” by Bee Gees it says “I was a Romeo
I knew the art of romancin'” here it says how Romeo was a smooth talker. It says how Romeo loves Juliet: “On and on ,our love is like the sun / It keeps going strong throughout eternity / I wanna love you in my life , sweet Juliet / Livin' without you in my life , oh my girl Juliet”. This song also says, “Juliet, oh,Juliet,/ This kind of lovin' you don't forget / Juliet, oh Juliet / You know you taught me to fly / You take me clear to the sky / And all the people around the / world can stand aside / Juliet , oh Juliet / This kind of lovin' you don't forget / Juliet , oh Juliet , Ah... / Juliet , oh Juliet”. These lyrics are just more that say how he loves her.
While the song does have a reference to Romeo and Juliet does it actually have an accurate connection to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet? After looking over this song I say that no it does not have a accurate connection to Romeo and Juliet. It is just basically stereotyping Romeo as a boy or man who is in love with a girl who is referred to as Juliet.
Many songs have references to Romeo and Juliet. this one does also but it is not an accurate depiction of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
