Term 3

Article posted March 26, 2012 at 01:54 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 322

Hi there,

The final term of Grade 5 is underway. It's been a fantastic year so far but we aren't finished yet!

We are working on finishing off simple and compound machines in science then will begin a unit on the human body. My goals for math include finishing 3 digit by 1 digit division, then get a handle on fractions and finally segue into decimals and measurement. I also wish to focus on healthy living and lifestyle choices in health and career education. We will continue classroom discussions that revolve around current events and social studies. In addition, we will continue to blend all subjects into language arts.

Report cards as it stands now, will be issued towards the end of the year. As always, please feel free to address any concerns with me via email lschade@sd57.bc.ca or by calling the school.

Thanks for your continued support.

Here is the list of questions that you and your classmates came up with. I am impressed with the quality of the questions in this list. It shows that you really took an honest look at the major topics covered in this forces chapter. You really showed ownership of your learning. Please remember to study the concepts and ideas of the questions and try not to memorize the answers! If you understand the concepts, the answers will be easy-shmeezy :)

Question: Explain what happens when one force is greater than another force.

Question: Give two examples of what surface texture can do to an object.

Question: There is a sled sitting at the top of a hill. What forces are acting on this sled to keep it from moving? How could the forces change? What would happen if they did?

Question: Use drawings, words, and label a diagram to show how surface texture and slope can affect the amount of force needed to ride a bike. Give two different examples.

Question: What is friction? Name three things that can happen when two surfaces rub together.

Question: If a roller skater is going up a hill and the other roller skater is on a flat road, which skater will have an easier time moving? Why?

Question: Draw an object that needs force to move. Include slope, load, surface texture, and the force.

Question: What tool can you use to measure force? How do you use it?

Question: What makes a person slide on ice?

Question: What affects the amount of force needed to move an object? Use scientific words from the chapter to explain.

Question: Which surface would be easier to run on, a gym floor or an icy sidewalk? Why?

Question: Would it take more force to move a 4L jug of milk or a loaf of bread? Why?

Question: What does equilibrium mean?

Question: What will an object do if forces are equally balanced on it?

Question: Will you move faster if you drag the load from your backpack on ice or on grass? Why?

Question: How does load affect a 1000 pound boat pulling a 1,500 pound boat? Explain.

Question: If you were to roll a medicine ball and a dodgeball down a hill at the same time, what would happen?

Chinese New Year- The Year of the Dragon

Article posted January 23, 2012 at 03:32 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 1070

Division 9 has been learning all about Chinese customs and culture. Specifically, we have focused on Chinese New Year and the similarities and differences between Canadian culture and Chinese culture. After researching Chinese New Year, the class researched and then brainstormed a list of information that was important to them. Here's the list!

-Chinese New Year is also named the Lunar New Year
-In ancient China, bamboo stems were filled with gun powder and burnt to create an explosion, similar to a firecracker.
-It is believed that loud noises drive away evil spirits and dragons.
-2012 is the year of the dragon (Chinese Zodiac)
-On the 7th day of the New Year, people turn one year older.
-Chinese New Year starts with a full moon.
-Chinese New Year usually lasts for 15 days.
-Older family members give younger family members red envelopes filled with money.
-"Xin Nian Kuai Le" means Happy New Year, in Chinese.
-The lantern festival is on the 15th day of Chinese New Year.
-Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. In China, it is known as the Spring Festival.
-It is said to be bad luck to wear black or white during Chinese New Year. Red on the other hand, is good luck.
-The colours red and yellow are seen everywhere. They are found on lanterns, costumes, and clothing.
-It is believed that a complete house cleaning is needed in order to start the year fresh, without bed luck. This ensures good fortune for the upcoming year.
-Xiao-Sui is the practice of staying up until midnight as a family to greet the New Year.

Term 1

Article posted December 12, 2011 at 02:07 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 1522

Wow, I know that I have mentioned it before but I am amazed how time flies by! Term 1 is complete! I must admit, your children have made my teaching year a real pleasure. I'm impressed with the level of ownership your children have shown so far in grade 5.

Some focus items that we will be diving into in the new year include units in forces and machines (science), nutritional health (health and career education), class debates (language arts), multiplying and dividing whole numbers, and I hope to also get to the human body and sustainability (science). Of course nothing is set in stone but my units are planned and i'm looking forward to the fun!

Over the Christmas break, I encourage you and your son/daughter to maintain a physically active lifestyle and keep up with reading. I am happy to read and review blog postings as well. Anything about Christmas, outings, outlook on the new year, etc. That's what a blog is for :)

I hope you get some time to relax and make the most of your time with family and friends. See you in 2012!

Short Stories

Article posted November 17, 2011 at 01:13 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 3459

Think of your favourite story for a few seconds....what is it about the story that makes it fantastically juicy? It probably has amazing characters, a great setting, and a plot that takes you on an amazing journey!

Your son or daughter is in charge of creating a short story that tantalizes the reader's imagination. He/she needs to include vivid details of the characters, the setting, and the plot (events that take place along the way). Included in the short story will be an introduction (of the characters and the setting.....all of course using details and descriptive words), the rising action or events leading up to the climax (the big issue, event, or problem), the falling action (problems, issues being solved), and the resolution (or conclusion or lesson learned).

Our first short story journey takes place on another planet. Your son/daughter is in charge of creating as interesting and gripping story as they can about a character waking up on another planet.

I'm looking forward to the results. Stay tuned for the story to be published on their blog!

Whole Numbers

Article posted November 17, 2011 at 01:03 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 104

Hello parents and students. Our Learning Intention this week (and part of next week) is "I can read and write numbers in standard, expanded, and written forms." When you have a moment this weekend, take a look at a newspaper or magazine and extract a few numbers from it (preferably in the hundred thousands). Ask your son or daughter to write these numbers in standard, expanded, and written form.

For example:

345,608 is in standard form.

The following is written in expanded form.
345,608 =(3 x 100,000)+(4 x 10,000)+(5 x 1,000)+ (6 x 100)+ (8 x 1)

or 300,000 + 40,000 + 5,000 + 600 + 8

Three hundred forty five thousand six hundred eight is written form.

November

Article posted November 2, 2011 at 10:57 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 76

November is underway and so are a few new activities in Division 9.

We have been working with our "little buddies" lately. Our class is embracing the leadership role that they are in when they partner up with the kindergartners. We are currently creating Remembrance Day messages and artwork, both with our buddies and on our own.

Your child has hopefully given you an informational sheet on whole numbers. This is our new math focus for the next few weeks. It's interesting to note that we could fit 182,000,000 single square units into our classroom. Although we generally cover up to 1,000,000 in our grade, we sidetracked from the lesson's focus and had a little bit of fun. Students estimated how many single 1cm cubes would fit in the classroom then we measured the length, width, and height of the room. Ask your child what the 182 million represents!

Every so often I add new links to the left-hand side of the class blog. Feel free to explore these links with your son or daughter. They connect with what we are working on in class. For example, the link on main ideas is similar to what we are currently working on in Language Arts.

Thank you for keeping your child focused on his or her blog. All of the feedback that I have received from parents has been very positive. Feel free to use the blog for anything you feel would be important for your child to blog about.

P.S Our PowerPoint presentations on the 6 physical regions of Canada are looking great. It has turned out to be a massive undertaking. Some students will have between 20 to 30 slides on their presentation.

Until next time!

This and That in Division 9

Article posted October 4, 2011 at 03:36 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 99

Wow! Is the time flying by or what? We have been in school for a complete month now.

Since the last update, Division 9 has been working on creating PowerPoint presentations. Stay tuned for information on how to view your son or daughter's presentation. I hope to have active web links to view them online.

In language arts, we have created autobiographies in newspaper formats. We have also composed Acrostic and Cinquain style poetry. In addition to the writing component of the poetry, students created pastel and paint, autumn pictures. The poem results can be viewed on our blogs. The paintings have been framed and placed in our classroom. They look fantastic! Many compliments have been expressed from fellow teachers, parents, and students in the school.

We have ran over 150 kilometers since the first week of school. In support of the Many in Motion tour, we decided that if heroes like Rick Hansen and Terry Fox can have the courage and determination to make it, we can too! It is our goal to make it across Canada before the end of the year. It's a lofty goal but I think we can do it!

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to know more about what we are doing in Division 9! Enjoy your Thanksgiving with family and friends.

What have we been up to?

Article posted September 22, 2011 at 03:08 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 256

Hello parents! We have been jelling as a classroom over the past couple of weeks. Routines and rules have been established as a class and ink is really starting to be placed to paper.

We have been working on connections in Language Arts. Using background knowledge and personal experiences, we have been reading and writing about connections to stories and events that are going on in the world.

We have dove into patterns this week. Students are getting the hang of using textbooks and have enjoyed working with others to solve problems. Our learning intention for this unit is "I can understand, explain, and show different patterns."

We have also began a unit on mapping. The learning intention for this unit is "I can use maps to locate, interpret, and represent major physical features in Canada."

We have also created personal flags or banners that depict personal traits and identity.

Please talk to your son or daughter about what they have been learning.

Things are going great so far in Division 9. As always, feel free to drop me an email if you have anything you want to discuss about your son or daughter!

First Assignment

Article posted September 2, 2011 at 12:36 PM GMT-8 • comment (18) • Reads 705

OK, we begin the 2011/2012 school year with a blog. It's a simple assignment that gets your feet wet in the blogging world.

All I want you to do is tell me 5 things about you. It can be anything that you want to share. Examples could include your favourite food, sport, outdoor activity, favourite class, how many animals you have, or what you want to be when you grow up. Really, it's all up to you!

So once again, your criteria is to tell me 5 things about you. Also, I would like to see your writing skills. Do your best to write your blog in paragraph form, using complete sentences, capital letters and punctuation.

Pictured above are my fantastic (yet at times troublesome) chocolate labs. Their names are Nash and Xiao Guai. Xiao Guai actually translates from Chinese to English, meaning "good boy." Nash is named after my personal hero, Steve Nash.
