7th Grade End

Article posted May 20, 2012 at 09:55 PM GMT • comment • Reads 994

I definitely enjoyed my 7th grade experience more than my 6th grade experience. I enjoyed this years because we did not have books reports, we had more hands on activities, and I was in the same classes as my friends. However I did not enjoy the frog dissection, the chicken wing lab and speaking in front of the class. I did not enjoy speaking in front of the class because I am a very shy person and I do not enjoy speaking in front of people even if they are my piers or friends. And I did not like the dissections because that is just gross. I learned this year about african rock art, Williams words worth, and how technology. I wouldn't change anything that happened this year except maybe the amount of time that we had to work on the world history fair because I don't like how now we have to squeeze in all these new lessons. Over all I enjoyed this year and I look forward to the 8th grade

International Town

Article posted May 14, 2012 at 04:42 AM GMT • comment • Reads 547

Overall I really enjoyed my experience at International Town. My job was currency exchange specialist in Singapore. At times my job was a little stressful because I ran out of a certain currency and nobody else had it, therefore, I could not meet the needs of the customers. I also felt a little rushed at the beginning because in order for anyone to shop in different countries, they had to come to the Singapore to get their money exchanged. There was a long line of customers and I felt like I did not get caught up until the end of the break. Then the rush of customers began all over again. This experience was nice because it showed us the importance of trade and what it is like to have a job. The only thing I would change is the length of the brake times because I felt a little overwhelmed, but overall it was a good experience and I would do it again.

World Histroy Fair

Article posted May 6, 2012 at 11:01 PM GMT • comment • Reads 479

World history has made up the building blocks of our modern day lives. This has effected how we think or why we have changed our behaviors, practices, and beliefs over time. For the world history project my topic was Bushman rock art. Bushman rock art is basically cave paintings made by the first inhabitants to South Africa, the Bushman people. My guiding question was, how has Bushman rock art effected modern day art? The most interesting part of the project for me was doing the research because I enjoyed learning about this important part of the African history that I did not know ever existed. I found it interesting to see the many different animals, landscapes, and actions the Bushman people drew. I also found it interesting that although the entire Bushman culture was eliminated, it was revived through the Bushman rock.
I learned several things during the World History Fair. I learned about the Roman lifestyle, the compass, slavery, and about the importance of cats in Egypt. I also saw a lot of cool 2D and 3D displays. I saw a replica of Medusa's head, and it was really cool. One of my favorite displays was a colosseum made of cake. I also liked my friends display of a paper mâché cat it was so fluffy and cute. Overall I really enjoyed this years World History Fair.

Seedfolks

Article posted May 1, 2012 at 03:32 AM GMT • comment • Reads 565

So far I think that Seedfolks is an okay book. It definitely is not something I would read because it is not something that interests me. I usually don't like books that bounce around from one character to another constantly. It's difficult to follow. I think that all the characters are unique. I say this because it sounds like they have all been through hardships in life and just want to make things right, and don't like how things are now. For example, at the beginning of the story the older woman immediately thought that the little girl was up to trouble, but that is just because they live in a gang neighborhood that has a history of drug activity. So far I have enjoyed the activities that we have done in our class. My favorite activity was the one we did in Mr. Howard's class room, which was making flowers out of aluminum cans. I enjoyed making the flowers and allowing myself to be creative. Over all I have enjoyed the activities and the book and I can't wait to read more of the book!

World History Fair :)

Article posted April 20, 2012 at 12:51 AM GMT • comment • Reads 619

For my World History project my topic is Bushman rock art. African heritage has always been of interest to me. The colors and designs have always drawn my attention, but the subject was too modern for the project’s needs. My searches led me to Bushman rock art. It is said that the Bushman people were the first to inhabit Africa. The Bushman rock art is basically paintings on rock, and some might be carvings as well. Normally the paintings are pictures or scenes of men hunting, animals, landscapes, and children and women. The painting are believed to have been a way for the Bushman people to keep count of days and time, or even keep track of accomplishments. The Bushman paintings have inspired modern day paintings and sculptures. For my project I am planning on creating a diorama of where the bushman people lived. I am also going to make a replica of some Bushman art, made out of plaster. I am definitely looking forward to seeing my friends projects and being able to present mine!!!

Strange Dreams

Article posted April 11, 2012 at 12:16 AM GMT • comment • Reads 753

I know we have all had strange out of this world dreams. I recently had one of those dreams so it started off like this. I was in my house and my mom was downstairs singing about bunny rabbits and my dad was at work. Of course my mom normally doesn’t sing so went down stairs to find two of my friends lying on the floor sleeping. They woke up and then we left to walk to the playground at my old school. All of a sudden all these dogs appeared and both of my friends were talking gibber. Then everything started to blend and I ended up in this big swirl then a face appeared it was singing, “Be with the baby” over and over again. When everything went back to normal I was in my back yard there was all these random people dancing. I found my two friends and we walked into my house and went into the garage. We got our bikes and went off into the neighborhood to ride. All of a sudden started to fly higher and I higher, and I couldn’t get down I started to scream yell and I almost fell off my bike. I slowly went down but realized that my friends were way behind me and that I had passed them up. I was about to get on my bike when I realized it had disappeared. I had a strange feeling like I was being watched and I turned around there was a man in a blue car chasing me, so I ran. Then I woke up just as he was about to catch me. I looked at my clock it was 2 forty something, then realized that I was crying I wiped my tears away thinking thank goodness it was only a dream.

Chicken Wings

Article posted April 9, 2012 at 09:17 PM GMT • comment • Reads 739

When we dissected the chicken I was completely grossed out. I was so happy that I didn’t have to touch as much as I was expecting to. It got worse when we took off the skin and then I my group was pulling it and squishing the chicken wing. Then I saw blood, or something red and I was about to get up and leave. But I did learn that when you push on the muscle the chicken wing straightened out. I also learned that getting the skin off is very frustrating and hard. Sure it was worthwhile but I could have done without, just because I was so grossed out.

The Unicorn Who Loved Pizza

Article posted March 19, 2012 at 09:41 PM GMT • comment • Reads 502

The Unicorn Who Loved Pizza
Upon a tiny hill
A unicorn lay still
She was pink and white
And loved to sleep at night

One day she smelled
Pizza in the air
She pranced about the valley
Seeking food for her belly

Finally she found the shop
And drank a lot of pop
She ate all day
Till she had to pay

She had her fill
But couldn’t pay the bill
The unicorn was sad
And also very mad

She went through tissues all day
Till she found a new pizza shop by the bay

The Ernest Green Story

Article posted March 18, 2012 at 10:45 PM GMT • comment • Reads 662

When we watched The Ernest Green Story I was amazed by how rude people were just because the color of someone’s skin. I also thought that it was amazing how much we have changed, in the United States, because that wasn’t that long ago. I mean my grandfather remembers when that was happening. If I was in that situation and I had a chance to go to that school I would have gone, hoping to get a better education. But I also wouldn’t have not lasted that long, because I would be too afraid from seeing what was going on around me to all the other students. I think things have definitely changed but you will always have those people who don’t know any better. There are also people who think people with a darker colored skin won’t be as good as a person with lighter skin. Also it might depend on what country you are in because that kind of stuff is still going on in other parts of the world. In the end I think that the United States has changed quite a bit from what it was not too long ago.

Never Trust a Skinny Cook

Article posted March 6, 2012 at 01:14 AM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 673

My favorite quote is “Never trust a skinny cook” by Iain Hewitson.

The Skinny Cook

Skinny mini really can’t cook
He doesn’t even follow the directions in the book
No fat on his bones
His cooking makes my stomach groan
He is thin and lean, and never tastes his food
Always cranky, never in a good mood
No thyme, pepper, paprika, or salt
It is the skinny cooks fault

Cell and Bacteria

Article posted February 25, 2012 at 12:14 AM GMT • comment • Reads 701

We have been learning a lot lately in science. We have been learning about cells and bacteria. We have learned the parts of the cells and how some cells are protected by a cell wall and a cell membrane, but bacteria has a capsule and a cell wall. Also plant and animal cells have a lot of similarities but they don’t have much in common with a bacteria cell. During this unit we have done a few labs. One of my favorite labs was the one where we looked through the microscope and looked at different types of protests. Protists are organisms that are hard to classify in one group. My friends and I enjoyed looking at the brine shrimp, which are a type of protists; we thought they were so cute and so fast. Overall I enjoyed this unit, even though I didn’t really care for the reading and note taking part.

Beyond the Hawaiian Islands
Beneath the bubbly blue sea
Against a small red rock
Near the Sunken vessel

Beside a pink Jelly- belly jelly fish
With dancing tentacles
Through the clear blue water
Along the ocean floor

Above a Sluggish whale
Near the swarming school of fish
Toward the open cave
Within the dark abyss

Across the decaying deck
Into the open hall
Within the Captains chest
Inside Preciouses jewels

Toward the clear blue sky
Past the coral reef
Above the waters rim
Into the Hawaiian sunlight

Books

Article posted February 10, 2012 at 01:33 AM GMT • comment • Reads 830

Currently I am reading Maximum Ride the Angel Experiment by James Patterson. My friend Sam told me it was a good book, so I took her word and I find it very interesting. The main character is Max. Max is a superhuman and has the ability to fly. Her sister, Angel, was taken away by erasers, werewolf like creatures that are out to get them. At the point where I am in the book, Max and her family are on an adventure to get Angel back. Along the way they split up and face many obstacles. I find it interesting because there is always something new going on and it builds suspense, but I also think that it is boring because it is somewhat predictable at certain points in the book. Normally, I find most books extremely boring, but this book has changed my mind on all books. Finally, sometimes I find this book a little confusing because I find it hard to follow. I think it is hard to follow because you are following four different stories and six characters. I definitely recommend this book, but be prepared; it is a big book, and has 420 pages.

My dog Samson

Article posted February 1, 2012 at 11:43 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 741

Many of us have dogs. I have two. My dog Princeton is lazy and his only train of thought is food. Of course he hates his dog food. But favorite is my dog Samson.Samson is so interesting. He is afraid of heights, shakes whenever you hold him, loves you on his own terms, and is double jointed. He is the cutest thing that you have ever seen, but when you go up to him to pet him he either runs away or goes flat. I absolutely love my dog but he doesn’t always love me back. When I ignore him that’s when he wants my attention. My family thinks that he was dropped on his head when he was a puppy, because he is always shaking like a Chihuahua. Lastly he is soo flexible he can extend his hind legs all the way back ,and cross them. When he does that he looks like a seal, so cute. No matter how strange or lazy my two dogs are I will always love the both of them.

Poetic Effect

Article posted January 27, 2012 at 02:59 AM GMT • comment • Reads 685

There are many “tools” that writers use to create effect in their writing. For example authors use imagery, repetition, and onomatopoeia to create an effect. Writers use imagery to alert your five senses. For example in Sarah Cynthia Silvia Stout would Not Take the Garbage Out, Shel Silverstein uses imagery to make the reader imagine all the piles of trash that are piled up in the house. To alert your sense of sight and smell, he describes “Blobs of gooey bubble gum” and “Chunks of sour cottage cheese”. Another tool that writers also use is repetition. Writers use repetition when they repeat words for emphasis. For example in the poem Casey At the Bat, the author uses repetition when he says “Casey, Mighty Casey “. He uses repetition to give emphasis on who is mighty. Lastly writers use onomatopoeia, that means to use words or words phrases and they echo there meaning. For example in some poems, authors might have to use words like bang, crash, buzz, etc. When you use words like that, it can create a sound in your head. These are some of that tools that poets use to crate effect in their writing and it can help you make a great poem.

Quotes

Article posted January 20, 2012 at 02:50 AM GMT • comment • Reads 666

I choose the quote, "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend” by Martin Luther King, Jr. I choose this one because I found it easy to interpret and easy to relate to. To me it means if you show somebody just a little respect or kindness, they can easily become a friend. I can apply this to my own life by being nice, patient, accepting, tolerant, and showing others kindness; maybe, by doing so I can make an enemy a friend or at least calm a negative situation. For example, in 6th grade, there was a girl in my class who went out of her way to give me dirty looks or make rude comments. Usually, I either ignored her as she had been a friend at one time. Whenever I passed her in the hall, I made sure to say hello. No matter how often she leered at me, I always said hello. Eventually, she left me alone as no matter how hard she tried to get under my skin, I always responded with kindness and never let her see me get upset. Finally, it can make an impact on the world because if everyone cooperated, tolerated, and accepted one other, we would have no war or no threats towards our country. That is my interpretation on this quote, and I think this can have a big impact on everybody.

New Year's Resolution

Article posted January 12, 2012 at 04:48 AM GMT • comment • Reads 859

When I was about 5 years old, I took my first piano lesson. I took piano lesson until the beginning of middle school. I became tired and bored with the piano and decided to play the violin. I begged my parents for a violin and promised to stick with it. My parents purchased me a used violin from a liquidation sale at UCCS, and I took lessons for about a year. I became bored with the violin as well, even though I enjoyed playing it. The part I did not like was the weekly lessons and the daily practice. It's been about eight months that I have been away from playing music, and I now have the urge to begin playing again. My New Year's resolution is to begin playing both instruments again, but at my own pace. I'm not interested in formal lessons at this time, but I would like to go back through my music books and practice reading the notes and learning new songs. That is my New Year's resolution.

I really enjoyed the project overall but it definitely was hard. We had a hard time communicating with each other. I also think it was difficult all agreeing on something. Especially when it came to deciding on a poem for the video but in the end it was easy. I was really scared when it came to recording. I normally hate how I sound in videos and on the phone. One thing I would change was our ways of communication. We should have started a new discussion tab when we got to about 75 discussions. I think Mrs. Lubich and Ms. G did a great job helping us out especially when one of us was having a hard time explaining something, or had troubles moving on. Overall I enjoyed the project and would definitely do it again.

Greece

Article posted December 9, 2011 at 03:11 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1282

In humanities we are learning about Ancient Greece. These are some of the facts I have learned. Athens, Sparta, Megara, Argos, and Corinth are city states. City-States are independent state made up of a city and its surrounding territory. Athens and Sparta were the most powerful and well known of all the city states. They were sworn enemies. Athens and Sparta began a war over a city state not choosing one of their sides. At one point, Sparta and Athens worked together to defeat a common enemy. This was pretty amazing since they were sworn enemies. The people of each city-state were very different. Athenians were mathematical. They used their brains more than their strength. They considered themselves better than other city-states because of that. Sparta was known for its strength. The people of Argos were well-rounded. It had qualities that were similar to all of the city-states combined.
Currently in class we are engaged in several team activities. On Tuesday we were assigned our city-states. My city-state is Sparta. That day we had to come up with a chant, hand shake, and symbol that represented our team Sparta. Our chant was: We lie, we cheat, we break the rules, that’s why Sparta rules. Today we designed our symbol. Our symbol is a circle with a Greek helmet inside. It has the name Sparta written on the helmet and the letter sigma in upper and lower case. In addition we learned the Greek alphabet. I am enjoying this unit so far, and I can’t wait to get more into it.

Black Friday!?!

Article posted December 2, 2011 at 12:47 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1216

We all know about Black Friday, this is the Friday after Thanksgiving, which marks the start of the Christmas season. Some of us love it and others hate it. I don’t care for it, but that’s just my personal opinion. I don’t like it because I hate to go shopping for long periods of time, I hate to wait in long lines, and I hate getting up before the sun on my days off from school. Another thing that I hate about Black Friday is people’s actions. People pepper spray each other, shoot guns, and attack each other over “great deals.” For example I was watching the news on Friday and even they called it a “black and blue” Friday, which says it all. What made me even more disappointed was the fact that people were attacking a little kid over video games and toys. One guy was accused of shoplifting, but the truth was that he was just putting a video game in his waste band to prevent his child from getting attacked, by the other crazy shoppers. I just think Black Friday is so crazy. Christmas is the season for giving and spending time with family and friends. It’s a time of year that we should treat one another with kindness, not be mean and rude for a 50 inch flat screen television on sale for $200.00, for the first 30 shoppers in the store. What do you think?

Thanks & Giving

Article posted November 15, 2011 at 01:26 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1180

I am thankful for my family. Why I am thankful for my family is that, first my parents provide me with food and shelter. I am also thankful for my family because without my grandparents and aunt I would not have all the clothes that I am wearing today. Lastly I am thankful for my family because they provide me with unconditional love. I am also thankful for being an only child because when I get tired of hanging out with my friends I can just send them home to their parents. Lastly I am thankful for getting good grades because it makes me feel good about myself, and also makes my family proud. These are some of the many things I am thankful for.

Mysteries

Article posted November 9, 2011 at 02:39 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1135

The best mystery I ever read was The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman. I think of it as the best mystery I ever read, probably because it was one of the few mysteries I ever read. I also think it was entertaining because it kept me reading and usually I stop reading after I’m about half way through the book. Another thing that I liked about this book was that it wasn’t just a mystery it was an adventure, and I rather read an adventure than a mystery. I liked the way that the author developed the characters because it gave me a good sense of who they were, their lives as teenager, their struggles, and their adventures at the repository. If I had to write the beginning of a mystery I would begin it like this. I was sitting in the living room and the wind was howling outside. My parent weren’t home, and I was about to go over to my neighbor’s house to hang out with my friend because I didn’t want to be alone. When, out of nowhere, I heard a thud. I decided I would be brave, and I went upstairs to find my favorite stuffed bunny’s head missing. Attached to the bunny was a note that said, “I got the BUNNY …”.Do you think that this will make a good mystery?

This is my introductory paragraph. I want to know if it catches your attention and if you want to read more.

Always remember. Always remember what? Always remember Veterans Day? When my teacher told us to write an essay about Veterans Day and the topic was, always remember, the only thing that came to mind was the fact that November 11th is my birthday.  That’s a day my parents will not forget. When I think of my birthday I think that this day is all about me. The truth of the matter is that I share this day with all the many soldiers that died for this country and all the veterans that are serving right at this very moment. It’s about the soldiers who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan just in time for the holidays, my grandfather who served 23 years in the United States Air Force, and my father who served 4 years in the Army. It’s about remembering the tragic events of 9/11 or the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  It’s about all those people present and past who fought for my freedom and to keep this country safe.

Smart Motorcycle?

Article posted October 19, 2011 at 04:04 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1789

It’s amazing what people can do with their knowledge of technology. I was just watching a video on the CNN Student News website about motorcycles. Motorcycles use to be as simple as taking your average bike and slapping a motor on it, but now there is an invention called the safe motorcycle. It looks like a smart car with only two wheels, runs on electricity, and is able to stay balanced because of a mechanism called a gyroscope. The gyroscope is eight years in the making and allows the motorcycle to always keep its balance when it tilts and leans. The amazing inventor that came up with this invention is Danny Kim. He came up with the idea from his knowledge of vehicles and engineering. Why it is safer that an average motorcycle is that when it takes impact from a car, instead of falling down, it teeters and then regains its balance. I just think this is amazing. If you want to learn more go here, http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/ then watch the video on the top or bottom of the page. I hope you find interest in this topic and oh by the way if you want one, look for it in about five years and it will cost you $16,000.00.

Black-eyed Suzie

Currently, I’m reading Black-eyed Suzie by Susan Shaw. I’m amazed that I actually like this book, because usually I’m not a big reader. I like the way the author develops the characters in the book. You get a really good sense of who they are and what they are going through emotionally. I enjoy how the author builds suspense, for example when the main character, Suzie, finally admits that her mom abuses her. One thing that I don’t like though is the fact that the author is always switching from what’s happening in the past, to what is happening in the present. Overall, I really enjoy the book I’m reading and I can’t wait to learn what happens at the end.

Flu Shot

Fall is in the air
It's that time of year again.
Flu season
That can mean only one thing,
FLU SHOT!!!!
Yearly my mom drags me to the nearest Walgreens to have my imm-un-i-za-tion.
As soon as she mentions flu shot, my anxiety level rises.
Driving to the drugstore makes me light-headed and weak.
Sitting in the back seat of the car, I can imagine the pinch and squeeze.
Straight ahead, I can see the pharmacy sign, Flu Shots Everyday.
My mom hands in the paperwork,
Big mistake. Why? Thirty minutes pass, then I hear my name.
Uh oh.
I'm tense and stiff. I can barely move.
I'm gonna faint.
I see the lights.
The pharmacist says, "Loosen up, okay."
"I'll do so", I say.
Pinch, ouch, yank, pull.
"You're all done", she says
"I'm bleeding", I say
Can I have a band-aide?

To Ban or Not to Ban

Article posted September 30, 2011 at 03:00 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1828

I don't think it is necessary to ban books. Everybody should be allowed to read what they want even though other people might not agree with the topic, point of view, or belief. I do think that certain topics shouldn't be in elementary schools even if it might be written at lower reading level. For example, "Black-eyed Suzie" is written at an elementary reading level, but the topic is about child abuse. I believe if a book has received alot of concerns or complaints from a parent, it should have a note warning the parent or student. That's how I feel about banning books.

Article posted September 30, 2011 at 02:49 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1751

I really enjoyed the Fox Run field trip, I loved everything about it but my favorite part was the team building activities. Why I enjoyed these the most was because we had a lot of chance to get to know someone new and we had a chance to enjoy ourselves without having to worry about any class work. It was just a fun time. My favorite activity was when we played the camouflage game with Mr. Howard because it was always so hard to find a tree that was just the right thickness and how to lean on it. Lastly one of the things I learned was that all things have to adapt. After hearing about all the struggles that animals have to deal with it made me realizes all the things that we don’t appreciate, like shelter, food, and water. Overall I enjoyed this field trip and I can’t wait to go on another.

math?

When watching this video I was very confused. I watched it a second time, but I still felt the same way. Then I ask my parents to watch video as well. My dad understood what was going on, and explained it to me. He started with a number that was a multiple of seven. When you add 7 to the number, the number in the ones column had to be bigger than seven and the number in the tens column has to be smaller than seven. Through trial and error, he came up with 49. Since 7 can’t go into 4, you put that off to the side for later. 7 can go into 9 so 9-7=2. Now you bring back the 4 and that makes 42. 42-42=0. Therefore, 16 X 7=49. To check your work, you can do that by adding 16 (7) times (16+16+16+16+16+16+16=49). 6 X 7= 42 + 7 (1’s)= 49. After trying this process several more times, I also learned that you could use this algorithm with almost any number as long as the rule applies. For example: 3 X 17=24, 6 X 17=49, 7 X 16=49, and 3 X 17=24.

Funniest Thing!

One of the strangest, weirdest, and funniest things that ever happened to me is when I was about four and I was in the checkout line with my mom. I was dancing around and looking at the candy. That’s when I saw my favorite candy a Hershey bar with nuts. So how I got candy was hugging my mom and telling her I loved her. So I did just that, but my mom moved up in line( withoutme me knowing). So I ended up hugging some random fat guy. And I was so embarrassed I completely forgot about my candy bar.

Rachel's Challenge

I think that Rachel’s challenge is a very effective experience. I think it is also need because it gives kids, like us, more perspective on life. Rachel’s challenge made me think of life in a different way. That night I went home thinking what if I just didn’t wake up tomorrow. That changed my perspective on life. That made me want to leave a good impression on everyone I ever met. So I did, but I figured out that is hard to be nice to everybody. It’s also hard to please everybody. But I think that Rachel’s challenge is a great learning experience and that the school should continue with that program.
