It's All Downhill From Here

Article posted May 15, 2012 at 11:45 PM GMT • comment • Reads 705

For me 7th grade was very good. Everyday seemed kind of slow but the year went by fast! I think that everything was successful, I didn't really have any problems. I definitely learned more about not relying on teachers, but being independent. I can't really think of anything I'd change, but some medium sized projects I would like to do before the night before they are due. In 8th grade I want to not procrastinate as much. I don't like doing things until the last minute. Finally, I think that the upcoming 7th graders will do just fine, as long as they relax.

I-Towne

Article posted May 11, 2012 at 11:15 PM GMT • comment • Reads 454

I think that I-Towne was an amazing experience! It was a lot of fun! I definitely learned a lot, especially about independence. I wish we had a longer time, we worked so hard for nothing, really. The breaks were super short, so by the time I got money it was time to go back. My favorite part was looking at what each country had to offer, it was very unique. Overall, I really liked I-Towne.

WHF Review

Article posted May 5, 2012 at 03:19 AM GMT • comment • Reads 601

"How did Ancient Rome's clothing for women effect that of today?" World history influences our lives today in many ways. In my project, it influenced today's clothing. Many things are similar. They had a zona/bra, a subligaculum/slip, a tunic/dress, a stola/dress that represented marriage, and a palla/shawl. The most interesting part for me was that women had so many layers. I found out a lot, such as sometimes women would wear more than one tunic.

From the other 7th graders I learned many things. One of the main things I saw was Asian writing. I thought it was very interesting how they could understand all those symbols, but I guess they could say that about our letters. One thing that really fascinated me was that Leonardo Da Vinci was more than just an artist, I did not know that before.

Seedfolks

Article posted April 30, 2012 at 11:30 PM GMT • comment • Reads 534

I honestly don't think Seedfolks is the best book. I haven't been able to read that much of it but it is very repetitive, new foreign person, see the garden, have some big memorable thing, then contribute to the garden. At this point I don't really know that much about the characters, but they all seem pretty good. I think the activities have all been very fun. I really like Mr. Howard's flowers and Mrs. Lubich's rocks. I think I liked them so much because they were artsy, and you didn't have to think as much.

My topic, Ancient Roman Clothes for Common Women, has created change in that now I can respect the ancient Romans for their incredible ways of meeting clothing necessities but not going overboard. My final project is turning out pretty good. This weekend I've been working on my display and board.

Babies

Article posted April 12, 2012 at 03:40 AM GMT • comment • Reads 883

My 28 year old cousin Amber, is due to have her baby in June, and I cannot wait! They haven't decided on his name, but are deciding mainly between Easton (yes, like the bat) and Teluride (It's a city in Colorado, they would call him Rider). Anyways, I will get to babysit the baby and help my cousin out over the summer, which is good because I never really have been able to babysit or spend a lot of time with babies since I'm an only child. My mom and I (but mainly me) are going to put a scrapbook together of the baby and my cousin because I think it'd be really cool to see more of me as a baby.

Chicken Fun!

Article posted April 9, 2012 at 03:10 AM GMT • comment • Reads 674

I think the chicken wing lab was fun, but definitely gross. It was cool being able to see the chicken wing move and seeing how the wings worked. I was partnered with Ella and Ben and at one point Ella and I accidently cut into a vein or something because a little bit of blood spit out. Even with that it was still a fun and worth while project. I learned a lot about how muscles work together and it definitely helped to be seeing what we were learning in class.

Little Rock Nine

Article posted March 15, 2012 at 10:07 PM GMT • comment • Reads 608

When I watched the movie, I was horrified at what the teenagers were going through. If I was put in their shoes, I think I wouldn't be able to "survive" at first, but yet grow stronger by the end of the year because I would already be used to it, and it would still hurt, but it wouldn't be as big of a surprise. However, I don't think I would have the courage to fight back, mainly because I'm more of a background person, not the main character. I think it was unfair that the blacks were treated so badly. What did they ever do wrong? I think that some things have changed, but a lot of whites still put more pressure on blacks to prove themselves good. Also, we still have blacks and whites, which makes us seem like to different things, sort of like a lion and a rabbit. It's really not true, the only thing that's different between whites and blacks is skin color.

The Scoop on Science

Article posted February 23, 2012 at 03:03 PM GMT • comment • Reads 515

So far, I have actually enjoyed the science unit, mainly because all of the labs. I’m more of a hands on learner, and with all the labs and seeing the small cells, it amazes me. The one thing I don’t like is all the notes we have to take. Other than that, it’s truly a fun unit.

The Great Game

Article posted February 16, 2012 at 01:16 AM GMT • comment • Reads 780

Beyond the deep, dark green forest,

Past the busy streets,

Over the snow-capped mountains,

Near the deep blue pond,

About their business,

Without much luck,

During the ninth inning,

Despite the points,

Toward the dusty plate,

Under great pressure,

Until the hit ball,

Across the high, metal fence,

Up the desperately low score,

Down the risky outs,

For a great game.

Right now I am reading a book called What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. In the book, a girl, Mclean Elizabeth Sweet, lives with her dad after her mom left him for the new coach of their favorite basketball team. Since Mclean and her dad move a lot for his job, Mclean changes her name and personality every time, but this time she stays Mclean. As time goes on, Mclean is trying to figure out who she really is.

Softball

Article posted January 31, 2012 at 02:42 AM GMT • comment • Reads 793

Softball. It is my life. People never seem to understand what it takes to play softball. It’s not just throwing and hitting. You need to be able to throw the ball with a hard backspin at the chest of the person you’re throwing to. It is necessary to be able to hit the change up and the drop ball. Your bunt needs to be in control. It’s important to be able to field a hard bouncer, slow dribbler, line drive and a pop fly. Most of all, you need dedication and heart. You can’t be afraid of the ball. If you’re a 1st baseman, or 1st basewoman, as I prefer, the ability to stretch and catch any ball is vital. Nothing can go by you. I also happen to be a sacrifice hitter, which means I’m not the hardest hitter, but I can hit/bunt almost any pitch that comes at me, mostly getting out, but in the process advancing the runner(s). For those of you that don’t know, this is the typical lineup: 1. Strong, fast hitter. 2. Sacrifice hitter to advance #1. 3. Strong hitter, but will stay on base, no homerun. 4. Either strongest or 2nd strongest hitter on team. 5. Same as #4. 6. Not the best hitter. 7. Average hitter, stays on base. 8. Either slapper/ another sacrifice hitter or a lefty. 9. Strong hitter, but only just above average. The next time you think softball is easy, try hitting a 12 in. ball hurtling at you at 45-50 mph from 43 ft. away. And yes, softballs are harder than baseballs for your information.

Robert Frost

Article posted January 29, 2012 at 09:42 PM GMT • comment • Reads 724

Some things that poets can use to create effects in their writing are emotion, sound devices, and word choice. Emotion helps create effects by setting a mood for the reader. A poem filled with emotion will mean more than a poem that is boring and dull. Sound devices can create enjoyment for the reader, with methods such as rhyming and alliteration, the poems are more fun to read. A lot of children's poems, especially Dr. Seuss, have sound devices. Finally, word choice can make a poem sound better, and sometimes words are more fun than others making the poem enjoyable.

Kahlil Gibran

Article posted January 18, 2012 at 11:26 PM GMT • comment • Reads 722

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." Kahlil Gibran
When I hear this quote I think of how items aren’t significant, they can bring joy, but when you give someone an action like love or care from your heart it can mean so much to a person, something that an item can never do.I can apply it to my life by giving more of me and less of the world. It can definitely change someone’s attitude positively, they can realize that items can only do so much, they need to actually try, and they just might. This could impact the world if everyone just tried to be nicer and more loving, caring, and selfless.

2012

Well, my biggest goal is probably to practice softball more because I’ve been slacking off. I have a lot of tools for me to use, but sometimes I feel to lazy. I also want to work faster and better on my homework because I waste a lot of time and easily get distracted. What I am going to do is set a timer and try to finish within an hour instead of four (yes, I am really that bad at staying on track). Finally, I want to study more because I am lucky if I study at all, especially Spanish because I always forget to and am never in the mood to do it, but it’s part of my homework, even if it isn’t official. Wish me luck on these!

I think the wiki was ok. It was fun, but hard to communicate. It was also hard with computer problems. Things that went well were designing and writing the page. Next time I would try to communicate maybe not more, but clearer. I think next year it would be easier if there had to be less content on the page.

Greece

Article posted December 9, 2011 at 01:05 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1338

Honestly, I don’t know that much about Greece, just that they had a lot of mythological things, and many gods.

In class we are all different city sates, Sparta, Corinth, Megara, Argos, and Athens. I am in Athens. The Athens can’t stand the Spartans, and vise versa. We each have our own little sign, ours is a purple block letter “A” with thens written out small next to it, and on the side it says “All Hail Athena,” our goddess.

Traditions-Ms. Casey

Article posted December 2, 2011 at 01:42 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1267

Around Thanksgiving, we vary from staying home to traveling. Thanksgiving isn’t really that special except we cook all day. Every year I don’t eat anything until dinner. I’d have to say my favorite food would be the stuffing in gravy. I’m the only one in my immediate family that likes gravy, so I only get it once a year. Everything gets drenched in gravy. My favorite pie is pumpkin.
The thing I am most thankful for is my family and friends that provide so much and bring me undeniable joy. Without them I would have nothing and not be who I am today. Sometimes I can be greedy and selfish, but they help me through all my bad days and troubles.

Giving Thanks

Article posted November 19, 2011 at 05:44 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1092

There are several things I am the thankful for, but there are probably three main things. The first is my family. They are always there for me and have provided so much. If it weren't for them, I don't think I would be the person I am today. Second, there's sports.I play softball, and that's pretty much my whole life. Softball is very expensive, so I'm very lucky to be able to play and travel. Third, there's my easy life. So many people around the world have to work hard for every small thing. We take so much for granted, but what if we had to work for it all?

Mystery

Article posted November 11, 2011 at 02:09 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1160

The best mystery I have ever read is "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe. It isn’t as much a mystery as the others, but it is very suspenseful. I haven’t really read mysteries before though, so that would have to be my favorite one. I like it because there’s a lot of suspense and you never know what’s going to happen.

I think a good mystery starter would be:

Mr. Ethan Richardson was rich. Not your typical rich were you have a million or so, but he had billions of dollars. He was the richest man on Earth- that was until one fateful night where everything changed.

I like being able to see what people think of my writing instead of just guessing that it’s a good or bad piece. I haven’t really had to many problems, although I’d like to have my blogs checked more often so they get posted sooner. Overall, this has been awesome, and I love doing it.

Current Event- Libya

Article posted October 21, 2011 at 03:39 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1675

http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/

I saw a video about how Libya’s former leader, Moammar Gahafi is now dead. There were several people celebrating in Libya, not only for his death, but that their civil war is most likely ended now. The civil war began just by some rebels against Gahafi that wouldn’t be calm just this past February. Supposedly, Gahafi’s goal was to change the world, but he just didn’t take the right path. Gahafi especially targeted Americans. I think this is good for the people in Libya for sure. I definitely would not have like to have him as a leader for forty-two years, would you?

Torrent

Article posted October 12, 2011 at 12:10 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1473

My favorite book of all time actually happens to be one I just finished reading. This book is Torrent by Lisa T. Bergren. Torrent is the third book in the River of Time Series. This book is about two girls (Gabi, the main character who is eighteen; and Lia, her younger sister that is fifteen.) Gabi and Lia are not your typical American girls. Although they live in Boulder, Colorado, their parents are archaeologists, so they spend each summer in Italy! But that isn’t the weird thing; these girls travel back in time through a tomb to medieval Italy. In Torrent, Gabi and Lia have managed to take their parents with them on their third trip back. (They went alone on the first, with their mom on the second, and managed to save their dad before he got in a car crash two years before the present.) Lia and Gabi were wandering in the tomb one day, when they saw handprints that matched their own exactly and were only warm for them. When both hands were on the prints, they traveled through time. In medieval Italy, Gabi and Lia have found two great guys, Marcello and Luca who have stolen their hearts. I find this book more entertaining then most because there is constant war and battles between Sienna (the good side) and Firenze (the bad side) over territory, and sometimes the She-wolves of Sienna, which are Gabi and Lia. Remember, women’s rights are a long way away. There are definitely too many reasons to name why I love this book.

Walk Up Song

Article posted October 7, 2011 at 07:11 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1367

So, you know how in baseball they have walkup songs that they play when they walk up too bat? Well, I’ve been thinking about what my walk-up song would be. I would probably do Centerfield by John Fogarty because it’s catchy and a lot of people know it. What would your song be if you could choose? It doesn’t even have to be the whole song, just a snip-it. Maybe you would combine songs. It’s your choice.

I enjoyed this game especially because it was fun to see if you would survive or die. I also learned in it that survival isn’t as easy as it sounds. My favorite part of that game was the surprise when you were water, food, or shelter and you got to be a deer, because it wasn’t that often. I also liked being a deer and trying to find my need, I always picked the wrong thing, so I died. I also liked trying to make it to the deserted island, it was very challenging. Over it all, I learned more about nature, like how hard it is for animals to survive, how they all have unique gifts or adaptations, and how diverse wildlife can be. I definitely enjoyed this field trip!

Not to Ban

Article posted October 3, 2011 at 02:37 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1871

I feel that books should not be banned for a few reasons. First, there is Freedom of Speech. People can choose what they want to say and how they say it. If you ban a book you rule out Freedom of Speech. People have no rights of speech. Second, people will not have as big of a success chance if you don’t read their books, if the books are read, and people like them, they will share them, and people will buy them. People are having enough trouble with finances as they are. As for the older books, the publishing companies still need the money to produce enough books, and pay their workers. Finally, it can be really frustrating when you can’t find your favorite book at the school library because it’s not allowed or your friend really wants you to read the Twilight series or another banned book or series and it’s not there. I definitely feel books should NOT be banned.

Donuts! Yum!

Article posted September 21, 2011 at 01:28 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1662

If you have 28 donuts, and 7 officers how many do they each get? 13! That’s right. And if you have 3 officers, and 24 donuts, how many do they each get? 17! You are probably wondering how on Earth this is true, well, here’s how: First, division: our problem is 24÷3. The 3 doesn’t go into 2 but it goes into 4 1 time. 3x1=3, and 4-3=1. Now you put the 2 back and have 21. 3 goes into 21 7 times so you put the 7 by the 1, and now you have 17. Now, we will check with multiplication. Put the 17 on top and the 3 on bottom. 7x3=21. 3x1=3. 21+3=24. Now we will finish with addition, 17 3 times. Add up all the 7s. (21). Now add the 3 1s. 21222324That is how you get 3x17=24

Crawl All The Way Home

Article posted September 13, 2011 at 03:14 AM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 1606

One of the funniest things that’s ever happened to me was while I was playing on my travel softball team a few years back. I was about nine years old, and played for Thunder 10&under. We were playing a team from Wyoming, the Cheyenne Extreme.I was on third base, and it was a hard grounder to center, so I ran home. When you read this, remember that I was only nine and didn’t have very much “smarts” (forget the fact that I had already been playing travel ball for two years). Anyways, I ran home, but didn’t look to see exactly where the ball was and if they were throwing or not, so I slid into home. The only problem was I slid early. And I’m not saying a few inches for a scoot; I’m talking 3/4ths of the way there only. I didn’t feel like getting up (I know, lazy, right?), so I just crawled the rest of the way there. Luckily, there wasn’t a throw home, and I was safe, although it was a little bit humiliating, I couldn’t stop laughing. I had fun that game, and we ended up winning. (If anybody asks, it was all because I crawled all the way home.)

Rachel's Challenge

Article posted September 6, 2011 at 05:43 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1681

I thought that this year’s presentation was very touching, just like last years. I liked this assembly a little bit better, but that may have just been that I was expecting a repeat, and instead there was a whole new assembly. I was touched by all the interviews, and all the reenactments. Something that has stayed with me and kept me thinking was how Rachel and her brother were having a fight when they last saw each other, and how her brother slammed the car door. In a way, it’s not take each day and act as if it’s your last, its treat others every day like it’s their last. The presentation was definitely worthwhile, and for me, it keeps me intact, and not as grumpy. The effect on some people is undeniable.  In conclusion, I ask you one question: Does your legacy start today?
